Amused

Chapter 3: The Folder In Her Closet

I drove home faster than I ever had before.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was afraid.

Fear is a strange thing.

Anger makes you move.

Fear makes you question every memory you've ever had.

Every conversation.

Every smile.

Every moment you thought was real.

When I entered the house, Vivian was waiting in the dining room.

A candlelit dinner sat untouched.

She looked beautiful.

Of course she did.

Vivian always looked beautiful when she was preparing for war.

"You were gone a long time," she said.

I placed my keys on the table.

"Where's Ethan?""

Her expression shifted slightly.

"Upstairs.""

"And Caleb?""

"Playing.""

I stared at her.

"Why was Ethan in your closet?""

The smallest crack appeared.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

She smiled.

"I don't understand.""

I walked closer.

"Don't lie to me.""

Her face hardened.

"Excuse me?""

"You arrested Maya.""

"Because she stole from us.""

"No.""

The word came out before I could stop it.

"No, because she found something.""

Vivian went silent.

That silence told me more than any confession could.

"What did she find?""

She laughed softly.

"You’re really going to believe a nanny over your wife?""

"I'm asking you a question.""

"And I'm asking you why you're attacking me.""

The manipulation was almost impressive.

Almost.

For years, I had watched Vivian handle business dinners and charity events.

She could make anyone feel like they were the problem.

But this time, it wasn't working.

Because my children had shown me what I refused to see.

"You threatened Ethan," I said.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Careful.""

There it was.

Not sadness.

Not confusion.

A warning.

I walked upstairs.

"Ethan?""

No answer.

I opened his bedroom door.

Both boys were inside.

Caleb ran to me.

"Dad!""

I hugged him.

Then looked at Ethan.

He was holding another piece of paper.

"Dad, I found more.""

I took it.

It was a copy of a legal document.

My name.

Vivian's name.

And a date.

A future date.

A divorce filing date.

I looked at Ethan.

"Where did you get this?""

"Mom's office.""

"When?""

"Yesterday.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"Because I thought you would be mad at me.""

I sat beside him.

"Ethan, I could never be mad at you.""

He whispered:

"Mom said if Daddy knew, he would hate us.""

I closed my eyes.

My own child had been carrying this fear alone.

I picked up my phone.

I called my attorney.

Within an hour, he was at the estate.

His name was Marcus.

He had handled every major business contract I owned.

But he had never seen me like this.

"Daniel, what's happening?""

I handed him the documents.

He read silently.

Then looked up.

"Where did you get these?""

"From my son.""

Marcus removed his glasses.

"Your son found divorce preparation documents?""

"Yes.""

He looked troubled.

"Daniel, these are not recent.""

"What do you mean?""

"They've been prepared for months.""

Months.

The word echoed.

"Why?""

Marcus flipped through pages.

"Because someone was planning an exit.""

I looked toward the staircase.

My perfect family.

My perfect house.

My perfect marriage.

All of it collapsing.

Later that evening, I searched Vivian's office with Marcus.

We found hidden bank records.

Private accounts.

Transfers.

Money moved without my knowledge.

And then Marcus found something else.

A photograph.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

"What?""

He handed it to me.

It was Vivian.

Standing beside Victor.

Outside a hotel.

The date was six months earlier.

I felt nothing at first.

No anger.

No heartbreak.

Just emptiness.

Because suddenly every late meeting.

Every unexplained trip.

Every distant moment.

Had a new meaning.

Then Marcus opened another file.

Inside was a printed email.

The sender was Victor.

The recipient was Vivian.

The subject line:

*After Daniel signs, everything belongs to us.*

I stared at the screen.

Then I heard footsteps behind us.

Vivian.

She stood at the office door.

And she wasn't surprised.

She wasn't scared.

She simply smiled.

"You finally found it.""

Marcus stood.

"Mrs. Hale...""

She ignored him.

Her eyes stayed on me.

"Daniel, I was hoping you would make this easier.""

My voice was barely above a whisper.

"How long?""

She tilted her head.

"How long what?""

"How long have you been planning to destroy me?""

Her smile faded.

May you like

Then she said:

"Since the day I realized you weren't going to die quickly enough.""
