Amused

Chapter 4: The Woman Behind The Smile

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The room was silent except for the ticking clock on Vivian's desk.

I stared at my wife.

The woman I had loved.

The woman I had trusted with everything.

My children.

My home.

My future.

"Explain that sentence," I said.

Vivian crossed her arms.

"Don't pretend you don't understand.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"Mrs. Hale, I think you should stop talking.""

But Vivian laughed.

"No. He deserves to know.""

She looked at me.

"You built an empire, Daniel. Hospitals. Clinics. Investments.""

Her voice became colder.

"And you thought loving you meant loving me.""

I felt sick.

"So this was about money?""

"Everything is about money.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Not everything.""

She smiled sadly.

"That's why you're weak.""

That sentence hurt more than the betrayal.

Because she truly believed it.

She believed kindness was weakness.

Trust was stupidity.

Love was a business mistake.

"You used our children," I said.

For the first time, her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"I protected them.""

"No.""

My voice rose.

"You terrified them.""

"They're children. They'll forget.""

The words made my hands shake.

"They'll forget?""

She shrugged.

"Children adapt.""

I walked toward her.

"Not when their mother teaches them fear.""

A noise came from the hallway.

We all turned.

Ethan and Caleb stood there.

They had heard everything.

Vivian's face softened immediately.

"Ethan, sweetheart...""

But Ethan stepped backward.

"No.""

That one word broke something inside me.

Because my son wasn't angry.

He was afraid.

"Dad," he whispered.

I went to him.

"I'm here.""

He grabbed my hand.

"I told you.""

I knelt.

"Yes, you did.""

Behind me, Vivian suddenly looked nervous.

Not guilty.

Nervous.

Because she realized something.

Ethan wasn't alone anymore.

The next morning, I changed the locks.

I moved the children to my sister's house temporarily.

And I began the process of uncovering everything Vivian had hidden.

The flash drive Maya gave me contained records.

Emails.

Financial documents.

Photos.

Enough evidence to prove she and Victor had been planning everything.

But one thing bothered me.

The jewelry.

Why frame Maya?

Marcus discovered the answer.

"Daniel, you need to see this.""

He placed another document in front of me.

An insurance claim.

A massive one.

The jewelry had been insured for millions.

"She planned to report it stolen?""

Marcus nodded.

"Then collect the money.""

I stared at the paper.

"But why use Maya?""

"Because Maya was leaving soon.""

"What?""

Marcus pointed to another document.

A complaint.

Filed anonymously.

Against Vivian.

I read it.

Then froze.

The complaint described financial abuse.

Manipulation.

Threats.

And a witness.

"Maya filed this?""

Marcus nodded.

"She was trying to protect you.""

I sat back.

The woman my wife tried to destroy had been the one trying to save me.

That afternoon, I visited Maya.

She had been released after Marcus proved inconsistencies in the evidence.

When she saw me, she immediately asked:

"Are the boys okay?""

Not "Am I okay?""

Not "What happens to me?""

The boys.

Always the boys.

"They miss you.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I miss them too.""

I handed her a folder.

"Your record will be cleared.""

She nodded.

Then hesitated.

"Mr. Hale?""

"Yes?""

"There is something else.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

She looked uncomfortable.

"I wasn't the first person who tried to warn you.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

Maya looked down.

"Your father.""

My father's name hit me like a punch.

"My father died three years ago.""

"I know.""

"How could he have warned me?""

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out an envelope.

"Because he left this for you.""

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Written in my father's handwriting.

The first line destroyed me.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, then Vivian finally showed you who she really is.*

I looked at Maya.

"How long have you had this?""

May you like

She whispered:

"Since the night before your wedding.""
