Chapter 9: The Last Piece Of The Puzzle
The drive to Daniel’s apartment felt like the longest drive of my life.
Every streetlight.
Every passing car.
Every second that disappeared from the clock felt like another second I was losing my daughter.
Nia was somewhere I couldn’t reach.
Somewhere with the person I had trusted most.
My hands were locked around the steering wheel so tightly my fingers hurt.
Claire sat beside me in silence.
For once, she wasn’t trying to explain.
She wasn’t trying to defend herself.
She was just staring out the window.
Finally, I spoke.
“Tell me something.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“When did you realize Daniel was dangerous?””
Claire looked down.
“Before Emma died.””
My jaw tightened.
“And you still stayed close to him?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I stayed close to you.””
The answer surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because Emma asked me to.””
I glanced at her.
“What?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“After I called the police that night, Emma found out I was there.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“Because she saw me.””
“Before she…”
I couldn’t finish the sentence.
Claire nodded.
“Before she died.””
The words hurt.
Even after everything.
Even after all these years.
“She spoke to you?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Claire looked at her hands.
“She told me to protect Nia.””
My chest tightened.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“She knew she might not survive.””
Claire nodded.
“She told me Daniel was more dangerous than anyone understood.””
I stared ahead.
“Why didn’t she leave?””
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“Because she believed leaving would make him desperate.””
That sounded exactly like Emma.
Always thinking about everyone else.
Always trying to prevent pain before it happened.
“What did she tell you about Daniel?””
Claire hesitated.
“She said he didn’t want money.””
I looked at her.
“Then what did he want?””
Claire turned toward me.
“You.””
The word landed heavily.
“Me?””
“She said Daniel didn’t hate her.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Emma believed Daniel blamed her for keeping you away from him.””
I shook my head.
“That’s insane.””
“Yes.””
Claire looked out the window.
“But dangerous people don’t always think in ways that make sense.””
We drove the rest of the way in silence.
When we reached the apartment building, the lights in the hallway flickered.
The place looked abandoned.
Old paint.
Cracked walls.
A broken mailbox near the entrance.
I checked my phone.
Still no response from Nia.
My heart sank.
“She’s here,” I whispered.
Claire looked at me.
“How do you know?””
“Because she wanted me to find her.””
We walked upstairs.
Every step echoed.
When we reached Daniel’s old apartment door, it was slightly open.
I stopped.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“This is what he wants.””
“I know.””
“Then don’t go in angry.””
I stared at the doorway.
“I’m not angry.””
She looked at me.
I didn’t have to explain.
I wasn’t just angry.
I was terrified.
I pushed the door open.
“Daniel?””
No answer.
The apartment was dark.
But someone had been there recently.
A lamp was on.
A chair was pulled out.
A folder sat on the table.
And in the middle of the room…
Was Nia’s backpack.
My heart dropped.
“Nia!””
I ran forward.
The apartment was empty.
“Nia!””
Then I heard it.
A small sound.
From the bedroom.
I rushed toward it.
The door opened.
Nia was sitting on the floor.
Her wrists were not tied.
She wasn’t hurt.
But she was crying.
I dropped beside her.
“Oh my God.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“I’m sorry.””
She held onto me tightly.
“I’m sorry, Dad.””
“No.””
I held her face.
“You don’t apologize.””
She looked behind me.
At Claire.
Then whispered:
“I found it.””
I looked at her.
“Found what?””
She pointed toward the table.
“The truth.””
On the table was a small recorder.
A stack of documents.
And a photograph.
I picked up the photograph.
My heart stopped.
It was Emma.
But not alone.
She was standing beside Daniel.
And someone else.
Someone I recognized.
I looked at Claire.
Her face changed.
“You know him?””
I stared at the man in the photo.
“Yes.””
My voice went quiet.
“He was the detective who handled Emma’s death.””
Claire closed her eyes.
The room became silent.
Nia looked confused.
“What?””
I looked at the documents.
The detective’s name appeared everywhere.
Reports.
Signatures.
Approvals.
I felt sick.
“He changed the investigation.””
Claire whispered:
“Daniel didn’t do it alone.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed to the recorder.
“Play it.””
My hand shook as I pressed the button.
Static.
Then voices.
Emma.
My Emma.
I froze.
“Daniel, please.””
Her voice was shaking.
Another voice.
Daniel.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””
“You’re hurting him.””
“No.””
A pause.
“I’m protecting him.””
Emma sounded angry.
“By destroying his life?””
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand exactly.””
A sound.
Like someone moving.
Then Emma spoke again.
“If he finds out, he’ll never forgive you.””
Daniel laughed.
“He won’t find out.””
My breathing stopped.
Then another voice appeared.
The detective.
“Is everything handled?””
I looked at Claire.
She looked horrified.
The recording continued.
Daniel said:
“Yes.””
Emma whispered:
“You’re both sick.””
Then a loud noise.
The recording cut out.
I couldn’t move.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Nia whispered:
“That’s what Mom heard.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She touched the recorder.
“That night.””
My heart broke.
“You remember this?””
She nodded.
“Not all of it.””
She looked down.
“But I remember Mom saying someone else was there.””
I stared at the documents.
The detective.
Daniel.
Two people who had hidden the truth.
For years.
Then the apartment lights suddenly turned off.
Darkness.
Claire grabbed my hand.
“Someone’s here.””
A voice came from the hallway.
“You always were smarter than I gave you credit for.””
Daniel.
I turned.
He stood in the doorway.
Older than I remembered.
Tired.
But still wearing the same confident expression.
The expression of someone who believed he was always one step ahead.
“You took my daughter.””
Daniel looked at Nia.
“I protected her.””
I stepped forward.
“You hurt her.””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“I never wanted that.””
I laughed.
“You never wanted it?””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stared at him.
“I understand everything now.””
His expression hardened.
“You think you know the truth?””
He stepped into the room.
“You don’t.””
Claire moved closer to Nia.
Daniel looked at her.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“You killed Emma.””
The room froze.
Daniel smiled.
Not because he was happy.
Because he was tired of pretending.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t kill Emma.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who did?””
Daniel looked past me.
Toward the hallway.
And said:
“The person who has been protecting you this whole time.””
I turned.
Slowly.
Because I already knew.
I knew from the fear.
The silence.
The secrets.
And when I saw who was standing behind us…
I finally understood why everyone had been afraid.
May you like
It wasn’t because Daniel knew the truth.
It was because Daniel was afraid someone else would reveal it first.
