Chapter 4: The Woman Who Knew The Truth
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The voice on the phone belonged to a stranger.
But the fear behind her words felt painfully familiar.
Because it was the same fear I saw in Nia’s eyes.
The same fear I had ignored.
“The person who hurt my daughter is the same person who is hurting yours.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“Who are you talking about?””
The woman on the other end was crying quietly.
“I need to know where you are.””
I looked around the room.
At Claire.
At Daniel.
At Nia.
My daughter was watching my face, trying to understand what was happening.
“Who is this?”” I asked again.
“My name is Margaret.””
The name meant nothing.
But then she continued.
“I’m Lily’s mother.””
My eyes moved to Claire.
She looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
That told me everything.
“Margaret,” I said slowly.
“How do you know my daughter?””
A pause.
Then:
“I don’t know her.””
My grip tightened.
“Then how do you know something is happening?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I made the same mistake you’re making.””
The room went silent.
“What mistake?””
“Believing someone because they were family.””
My stomach dropped.
I turned away from everyone and walked toward the kitchen.
I needed space.
I needed to hear this without anyone watching my reaction.
“Tell me exactly what you know.””
Margaret took a shaky breath.
“My daughter Lily wrote a letter before she died.””
I closed my eyes.
The room behind me disappeared.
Only her voice remained.
“She wrote down everything.””
“About who?””
A long silence.
Then she said:
“Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
Even though I already suspected it.
Hearing his name from another person felt different.
It made it real.
I looked back.
Daniel was standing near the window.
Watching me.
Like he knew.
“Where did you get my number?””
“From the school.””
“What school?””
“The same school where Rachel works.””
I looked toward Rachel.
She lowered her eyes.
“Rachel contacted me after she saw the report.””
My voice became sharper.
“You knew?””
Rachel looked at me.
“I suspected.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone suspected.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone except me.
“How long?””
Rachel looked away.
“Since last year.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
“Last year?””
Nia covered her mouth.
Claire started crying.
I stared at Rachel.
“You knew my daughter might be in danger for a year?””
Rachel shook her head.
“No. I knew Daniel had been mentioned before. I didn’t know about Nia until recently.””
“Recently?””
“When Claire came to me.””
I turned toward Claire.
“You went to Rachel?””
Claire nodded.
“I needed someone who understood.””
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid you wouldn’t believe me.””
I stared at her.
“After everything?””
She whispered:
“After everything.””
That hurt because I understood what she meant.
Claire knew how much I loved my family.
She knew how much I wanted things to work.
Maybe she thought I would defend the idea of our family instead of protecting the people inside it.
And maybe…
Maybe she was right.
The thought made me sick.
My phone was still pressed against my ear.
“Margaret, where are you?””
“I’m outside.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I’m parked down the street.””
My eyes immediately moved toward the window.
“You’re here?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I saw Daniel’s car.””
Everyone looked at me.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You know he’s here?”” I asked.
Margaret whispered:
“I’ve been watching him for months.””
The room went cold.
“Why?””
“Because after Lily died, I couldn’t understand how nobody noticed.””
Her voice broke.
“So I started looking.””
I looked at Nia.
At my daughter standing there.
Small.
Quiet.
Trying not to cry.
“What did you find?””
Margaret was silent.
Then:
“Evidence.””
My heart started pounding.
“What kind of evidence?””
“I can’t explain over the phone.””
“Then come inside.””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“Why not?””
“Because if Daniel realizes I’m here, he’ll leave.””
I looked at my brother.
He was staring at me now.
Suspicious.
“Leave?””
Margaret lowered her voice.
“He always leaves when people get close.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you need to check your daughter’s room.””
I froze.
“My daughter’s room?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because that’s where Lily found the proof.””
The call ended.
I stood there holding my phone.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel laughed nervously.
“She’s crazy.””
I looked at him.
“Why would she say that?””
He shrugged.
“Because she’s grieving.””
I watched him carefully.
His first instinct wasn’t confusion.
It wasn’t anger.
It was dismissal.
“She lost her daughter,” Daniel continued.
“People do strange things when they’re desperate.””
I looked at Rachel.
“Is she telling the truth?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Yes.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Of course you would say that.””
Rachel looked at him.
“Because I saw Lily’s injuries.””
The room went silent.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
I noticed.
A small reaction.
But it was there.
“Get out,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
Daniel blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“You’re throwing me out?””
“Yes.””
His face turned red.
“After everything I’ve done for you?””
I stepped closer.
“My daughter was afraid of you.””
“That’s not true.””
“Nia.””
My daughter looked up.
I softened my voice.
“Do you want Uncle Daniel to leave?””
She didn’t answer.
But she moved closer to me.
That was enough.
Daniel saw it.
And for the first time, he looked defeated.
“I would never hurt her.””
I stared at him.
“I hope that’s true.””
He grabbed his jacket.
“You’re making the biggest mistake of your life.””
“No.””
I opened the door.
“The biggest mistake of my life was trusting everyone else to notice when my daughter needed me.””
Daniel stood there for a moment.
Then walked out.
But before he reached the driveway, he stopped.
He looked back at me.
And he said something strange.
Something that made my blood run cold.
“Ask Claire what happened the night Emma died.””
The words froze me.
My hand stayed on the door.
“What?””
But Daniel was already walking away.
I turned slowly.
Claire’s face had gone completely white.
“What did he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
My heart sank.
“Find out what?””
She sat down.
“I lied to you about the night Emma died.””
The entire room went silent.
Even Nia stopped crying.
I stared at my wife.
“What are you talking about?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“The night your first wife died…”
Her voice shook.
“I was there.””
I couldn’t move.
“What?””
She wiped her tears.
“I didn’t tell you because I was afraid you would hate me.””
My chest tightened.
“Claire…”
She looked up.
And the fear in her eyes was worse than anything I had seen before.
“I know who was with Emma that night.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Who?””
Claire closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“The same person who has been hurting Nia.””
Outside, thunder rolled in the distance.
And for the first time, I wondered if my entire life had been built on a lie.
I looked at Claire.
At Nia.
At the door where my brother had just left.
May you like
Then I whispered the only question I could think of.
“Who killed Emma?””
