Chapter 8: The Truth She Buried
The voice on the phone stayed silent for three seconds.
Three seconds that felt longer than the last twelve years of my life.
I stared at Claire.
She stared back at me.
And in that moment, I didn’t know what scared me more.
The possibility that the person on the phone was lying…
Or the possibility that they weren’t.
“Who is this?”” I asked.
A soft laugh came through the speaker.
“You really don’t recognize me?””
My grip tightened.
“Answer me.””
The voice changed.
The confidence disappeared.
And suddenly, I heard something familiar.
Not Daniel.
Not a stranger.
A woman.
“Put the phone down.””
I looked at Claire.
Because she had spoken.
Not the person on the phone.
Claire.
She was staring at me with tears in her eyes.
“Claire?””
Her face was pale.
“Don’t listen to them.””
The voice on the phone laughed quietly.
“See?””
I froze.
“See what?””
The voice replied:
“She always does that.””
I looked at Claire.
“What is happening?””
Claire stepped closer.
“I can explain.””
Those words again.
I felt something inside me break.
“Everyone always says that.””
My voice shook.
“Every time I find something, someone says they can explain.””
Claire stopped.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
I looked at the phone.
“Who are you?””
The person on the other end didn’t answer.
Instead, they said:
“Ask Claire what happened after Emma left the house.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Claire.
“What happened?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
“Claire.””
Her shoulders dropped.
“I followed her.””
The room became silent.
I stared at her.
“You followed Emma?””
She nodded.
“The night she died.””
Nia was standing behind me.
I immediately turned.
“Go upstairs.””
“Dad—”
“Please.””
Something in my voice made her stop.
She nodded slowly.
As she walked away, I waited until I heard her bedroom door close.
Then I turned back.
“Start from the beginning.””
Claire sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“I never wanted Emma to die.””
The sentence made my stomach twist.
Because nobody had asked if she wanted it.
Which meant somewhere in her mind, she had been carrying blame.
“What happened?””
Claire took a breath.
“Emma called me that night.””
“Why?””
“She found out Daniel had been taking money.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“She didn’t just find out.””
Claire’s voice became quieter.
“She confronted him.””
I waited.
“She told him she was going to tell you.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
“And then?””
“Daniel threatened her.””
“What did he say?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“He told her nobody would believe her.””
The room went still.
“He told her you would choose him.””
My jaw tightened.
“And did she believe that?””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“She believed you loved her.””
A painful silence followed.
“Then why did you follow her?””
Claire looked down.
“Because I was worried.””
“About what?””
“About Daniel.””
She wiped her tears.
“Emma sounded scared.””
I stared at her.
“So you followed her.””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“To your house.””
I froze.
“My house?””
She nodded.
“She went back to get proof.””
I remembered.
The night.
The rain.
The police.
The flashing lights.
Everything I had tried to forget.
“What did you see?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“I saw Daniel’s car.””
My heart dropped.
“He was there.””
“Yes.””
“Inside?””
Claire nodded.
“And Emma?””
“She was inside too.””
My hands curled into fists.
“What happened?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I heard shouting.””
“From where?””
“Outside the house.””
She swallowed.
“Then I heard something break.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I was scared.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was the same excuse everyone had used.
Fear.
Always fear.
“So what did you do?””
Claire looked at me.
“I called the police.””
I froze.
“You called?””
“Yes.””
“Then why wasn’t your name in the report?””
Her face changed.
“I never spoke to them.””
“Why?””
She looked away.
“Because Daniel saw me.””
The room went quiet.
“He came outside.””
My voice lowered.
“And?””
“He told me if I said anything, he would destroy your life.””
I stared at her.
“You believed him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“But I was wrong.””
I looked at the phone still in my hand.
The unknown caller had disappeared.
The call had ended.
But the damage remained.
“Why didn’t you tell me after?””
Claire started crying.
“Because you were broken.””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“It does matter.””
She looked up.
“But it doesn’t excuse it.””
Claire nodded.
“I know.””
For the first time, she wasn’t trying to defend herself.
She was admitting it.
And somehow that made it harder.
Then a sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
I looked toward the stairs.
“Nia?””
No answer.
My heart jumped.
“Nia!””
I ran upstairs.
Her bedroom door was open.
The room was empty.
My chest tightened.
“Nia!””
Then I saw the note on her bed.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
Dad,
I know you told me to stay.
I tried.
But I heard something.
I think I know where he is.
My heart stopped.
Below the writing was an address.
An address I recognized.
Daniel’s old apartment.
I turned around.
Claire was standing in the doorway.
“She knows.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Nia knows where Daniel keeps the rest.””
“The rest of what?””
Claire swallowed.
“The evidence.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Nia.
I opened it.
There was a photo.
A dark room.
A table.
A folder sitting in the center.
And in the corner of the image…
A person standing behind her.
My blood froze.
The message had only four words.
*Dad, I found him.*
I called immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a text appeared.
Not from Nia.
From Daniel.
*Come alone.*
I stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
*Or you’ll find out what happened to Emma too late.*
I looked at Claire.
She already knew.
“You can’t go alone.””
I shook my head.
“He wants me to.””
“He wants a confrontation.””
“I know.””
“Then it’s a trap.””
I looked toward the front door.
At the life I thought I understood.
At the family I thought I had built.
“No.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“For twelve years, I believed I lost Emma because life was cruel.””
My voice became quiet.
“But if Daniel took her from us…”
I looked at Nia’s empty room.
“I’m not letting him take anything else.””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I’m coming with you.””
I hesitated.
After everything.
After all the secrets.
I still wasn’t sure I trusted her.
But I knew one thing.
She was the only person who had been trying to uncover the truth.
“Fine.””
We left the house together.
But as we stepped outside, I noticed something.
A car parked across the street.
The same car from earlier.
The driver’s seat was empty.
The window was slightly open.
And on the windshield was a piece of paper.
I walked over.
Picked it up.
And read the message written on it.
*You’re already too late.*
Underneath the words was a name.
Not Daniel.
Not Claire.
Not anyone I expected.
It was Emma’s name.
And beneath it:
*She never died because of an accident.*
My hands started shaking.
Because whoever left that message wasn’t trying to scare me.
They were telling me something.
Something I had never considered.
May you like
Emma’s death wasn’t the beginning of the secret.
It was the end of one.
