Amused

Chapter 6: The Hidden Room

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

*You should have left the past buried.*

A simple sentence.

Seven words.

But it carried the weight of every nightmare I had refused to see.

Someone was watching my house.

Someone had taken a picture of my daughter.

Someone knew exactly what we were discussing.

My first instinct was to run upstairs.

To grab Nia.

To hold her.

To make sure she was still there.

But before I moved, my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, only one sentence.

*Ask her about the basement.*

I felt my stomach drop.

The basement.

I looked toward Claire.

Her face changed the second she saw my expression.

“You know something,” I said.

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was hoping we wouldn’t have to go there.””

The way she said it made my skin crawl.

“Go where?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“The basement.””

I stared at her.

“What does Daniel have to do with my basement?””

Claire swallowed.

“Everything.””

I didn’t wait.

I walked toward the basement door.

Behind me, I heard Nia.

“Dad?””

I stopped.

I turned around.

She was standing on the stairs, frightened.

I softened my voice.

“I need you to stay upstairs.””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“Nia.””

“I’m tired of staying away from things because adults are scared.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because she was right.

Adults had spent years deciding what she could handle.

Meanwhile, she had been handling things we never even noticed.

I walked back to her.

“You’re right.””

She looked surprised.

“But this time, I need you safe.””

Her eyes filled.

“Promise you’ll come back?””

I put my hand on her shoulder.

“I promise.””

She nodded.

I looked at Claire.

“Stay with her.””

Claire nodded.

“I will.””

Then I opened the basement door.

The smell hit me first.

Dust.

Old wood.

A place nobody had touched in a long time.

Except someone had.

The basement light flickered.

I stepped down slowly.

Each step creaked under my weight.

I remembered when we bought the house.

Emma loved this place.

She said the basement had potential.

A workshop.

A storage room.

A place where Nia could keep her old toys.

Funny how a place built for memories could become a place full of secrets.

Claire followed behind me.

“Wait.””

I turned.

“You’re coming?””

She nodded.

“You deserve the truth.””

We reached the bottom.

The basement was filled with boxes.

Old furniture.

Christmas decorations.

Things we had forgotten existed.

I looked around.

“What am I looking for?””

Claire walked toward the far wall.

“There.””

Behind a stack of old boxes was a wooden cabinet.

I frowned.

“I’ve never seen that before.””

“I know.””

She moved closer.

“Because Daniel built it.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“After Emma died.””

I stared at the cabinet.

“Why would he build a cabinet in my basement?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She reached behind it.

Her fingers found something.

A small metal latch.

My heart started pounding.

The cabinet door opened.

Inside was not storage.

It was a hidden compartment.

I stepped closer.

And what I saw made my blood run cold.

Files.

Dozens of them.

Folders with names.

Dates.

Notes.

I picked up the first one.

My hands shook.

Because the name written on the front was:

*Emma.*

I opened it.

Inside were printed messages.

Photos.

Documents.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Daniel’s name appeared again and again.

I looked at Claire.

“How long?””

She whispered:

“I found this after Emma died.””

“You found this?””

“Yes.””

“And you left it here?””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

My anger rose.

“You didn’t know what to do?””

She flinched.

“You think I’m not angry at myself?””

I looked away.

Because part of me knew she was telling the truth.

Everyone had failed in different ways.

But Nia was the one paying the price.

I turned the pages.

There were screenshots of conversations.

Messages between Daniel and someone unknown.

One message caught my attention.

*She’s getting suspicious.*

Another:

*Keep him close. He trusts you more than anyone.*

My hands went cold.

Another message:

*The girl is the only risk.*

The girl.

Nia.

I couldn’t breathe.

“He was planning something.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

I flipped through more papers.

Then I saw something familiar.

A photograph.

Emma.

Standing outside a restaurant.

With Daniel.

The date was two days before she died.

“What is this?””

Claire looked at it.

“She confronted him.””

“About what?””

“She found out he had been moving money.””

I looked up.

“What money?””

“Yours.””

The basement suddenly felt freezing.

“My money?””

Claire nodded.

“Daniel had access to your accounts because you trusted him.””

I stared at the papers.

“How much?””

She looked away.

“Enough.””

My hands tightened.

All these years.

I thought Emma died because of an accident.

A random tragedy.

Something cruel but meaningless.

But now…

Everything had a pattern.

Everything had a reason.

Then I found another folder.

Smaller.

Different.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

The first page was a photograph of me.

Taken from outside my workplace.

Another was me leaving a restaurant.

Another was Nia walking into school.

My stomach turned.

“This isn’t just about Emma.””

Claire nodded.

“He was watching you.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because he wanted your life.””

The words sounded insane.

But the evidence was sitting in my hands.

Then something fell from the back of the cabinet.

A small notebook.

I picked it up.

The cover was worn.

Inside was handwriting.

Emma’s.

My hands started shaking.

I read the first page.

I don’t know who I can trust anymore.

I swallowed.

The next line made my heart stop.

I’m writing this because if Daniel finds out I know, he’ll try to stop me.

I turned the page.

The person helping him is someone I never expected.

I froze.

Someone helping him.

I kept reading.

I thought Claire was innocent.

I looked at my wife.

Her face went pale.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I read the next sentence.

But I saw them together.

The room went silent.

I looked at Claire.

“Emma saw you with Daniel?””

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“No.””

“She wrote it.””

“I can explain.””

My heart sank.

“Explain what?””

Claire stepped closer.

“It’s not what it looks like.””

Those words again.

The same words she said when I found Nia’s bruise.

I hated hearing them.

“Then tell me what it is.””

She looked at the notebook.

“I met Daniel because Emma asked me to.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“She wanted me to find out what he was doing.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because when Emma died…”

Her voice broke.

“I became the only person who knew how dangerous he was.””

I looked at the notebook again.

There was one final page.

One sentence.

Written darker than the others.

Almost like Emma had pressed the pen into the paper with all her strength.

*If anything happens to me, do not trust the person standing closest to you.*

I slowly looked up.

Claire.

The woman who had been beside me every day.

The woman who had helped raise my daughter.

The woman who said she loved me.

And suddenly, I didn’t know if she was my protector…

Or another secret I had missed.

Then the basement light went out.

Completely.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Claire gasped.

“What happened?””

I grabbed my phone and turned on the flashlight.

“Stay behind me.””

Then I heard it.

A sound.

A footstep.

Above us.

Someone was in the house.

I looked toward the basement stairs.

And a shadow moved across the doorway.

A voice came from the darkness.

“You should have listened to Daniel.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t a neighbor.

It was someone I had trusted for years.

And when the person stepped into the light…

May you like

I realized the biggest secret in my family had never been hidden in the basement.

It had been standing beside me the entire time.
