Chapter 9: The Person Behind Vanessa
My father sat inside the storage unit, staring at the frozen image on the forensic laptop.
Michael had introduced him to Vanessa.
Michael had helped her gain access to our family.
Michael had been present when Mom died.
And now we had discovered that Mom believed someone else had arranged the entire thing.
Detective Harris closed the laptop.
"Mr. Carter, I need you to tell me exactly how you met Vanessa.""
Dad rubbed his eyes.
"Michael introduced us at a charity dinner.""
"When?""
"About eight months before Rachel died.""
I looked at him.
"Eight months?""
He nodded.
"Michael said she was a friend of a business associate. He thought we'd get along.""
"Did he know her before that?""
"I assumed they were acquaintances.""
Detective Harris wrote something down.
"Did Michael ever work with her?""
Dad hesitated.
"Not officially.""
"What does that mean?""
Dad looked toward the boxes.
"Michael had been struggling financially. He'd lost money in a business venture. Vanessa said she could help him recover.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"With what?""
"Property investments.""
The detective looked up.
"Was that the same business listed in the transfer records?""
Dad nodded slowly.
"V.C. Property Holdings.""
I stared at him.
"So Uncle Michael was involved in the company?""
"I don't know.""
"How can you not know?""
Dad looked exhausted.
"Because I trusted him.""
The words came out quietly.
I didn't have an answer.
The detective instructed the officers to preserve the entire storage unit.
Then she asked Dad to identify every document that might belong to our mother.
We found another folder containing photographs from the months before Rachel died.
Some showed Vanessa visiting our house.
Others showed Michael meeting her outside a restaurant.
One photograph caught my attention.
It showed the two of them standing beside a black SUV.
The date printed on the back was seven months before Mom died.
Dad stared at it.
"That's the car.""
"What car?"" I asked.
"The one Michael said was near Rachel on the road.""
I looked at the photograph.
The vehicle had a distinctive dent above the rear wheel.
Detective Harris photographed it.
Then she opened another folder.
Inside was a copy of a property agreement.
The document showed that Vanessa and Michael had jointly purchased a small commercial property through V.C. Property Holdings.
The purchase had been financed using money transferred from Rachel's account.
But the most disturbing detail appeared at the bottom.
The property was scheduled to be transferred into a trust benefiting Lily.
Dad frowned.
"Why would they do that?""
The detective studied the document.
"Perhaps they intended to make the transaction appear legitimate.""
I looked at the paperwork.
"Or perhaps they were trying to take control of everything Mom left her.""
Detective Harris nodded.
"That's one possibility we're investigating.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Aunt Susan.
*Lily is asking for you. She wants to talk.*
I immediately called her.
"Hey, squirt.""
Her voice sounded small.
"Are you coming home?""
"Not yet. We're still with the police.""
"Did you find anything?""
I looked at the folders.
"Yes.""
"Is it about Mom?""
"Yes.""
She was silent.
Then she asked:
"Did you find the video?""
I frowned.
"What video?""
"The one Vanessa showed me.""
I stepped away from the others.
"Lily, what did it look like?""
"It was on her phone. Mom was standing near the road. She was crying.""
"Did you see anything else?""
"Vanessa was holding the camera. I could hear Uncle Michael.""
My chest tightened.
"What was he saying?""
Lily hesitated.
"He said, 'You promised this would be over tonight.''"
I looked toward Dad.
He was speaking with Detective Harris.
I lowered my voice.
"Did Vanessa say anything?""
"She told Mom to stop making trouble.""
"Then what?""
Lily began crying.
"I heard Mom say she wanted to go home.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you see what happened?""
"No. Vanessa turned the phone off.""
I swallowed.
"Did she ever show you the video again?""
"Yes. A few years later.""
"Why?""
"Because I asked her where Mom's phone was.""
My grip tightened.
"What did she do?""
"She showed me the video and told me that if I ever spoke about it, she'd tell Dad I had caused the accident.""
I felt sick.
"Thank you for telling me.""
"Ethan?""
"Yeah?""
"Can I tell you something else?""
"Of course.""
Lily's voice dropped.
"Mom didn't fall because she was trying to run away.""
I stopped breathing.
"What?""
"I saw the video again. I remember it now.""
"Tell me.""
"Vanessa was holding Mom's arm. Mom tried to pull away. Then Vanessa pushed her.""
I looked across the storage unit.
Detective Harris noticed my expression and walked over.
I put the call on speaker.
"Lily, can you tell the detective what you remember?""
There was a pause.
Then Lily repeated what she'd told me.
Detective Harris listened carefully.
"Thank you, Lily. That's very important. We'll need to speak with you again when you're ready.""
After the call ended, the detective turned toward Dad.
"We need to locate Vanessa immediately.""
Dad nodded.
"She knows we've found this place.""
"Possibly.""
"And Michael?""
"We're looking for him, too.""
I looked at the laptop.
"There's another video.""
Detective Harris turned.
"What?""
I pointed to the file list.
One recording was labeled *FINAL_MESSAGE.*
It was dated the day before Mom died.
The detective opened it.
Mom appeared on the screen.
Her hair was pulled back, and she wore the blue cardigan I remembered from my childhood.
She looked directly into the camera.
"My name is Rachel Carter. If this recording is being watched, something has happened to me.""
Dad began shaking.
Mom continued.
"I need to make something very clear. I am not trying to destroy anyone's life. I am trying to protect my children.""
She took a breath.
"Vanessa has been taking money from Lily's account. Michael has been helping her. But neither of them is the person who started this.""
I leaned closer.
Mom looked down at something off-camera.
Then she continued.
"I found the original agreement. The person who arranged Vanessa's introduction to David also arranged the first transfer.""
She paused.
"I have proof. I put it somewhere only my children can find.""
Dad looked at me.
"Where?""
Mom lifted a small photograph.
It showed our family standing outside a beach house.
On the back, she had written:
*The first person who knew about the money was already in our family.*
Then the video ended.
Dad stared at the screen.
Detective Harris replayed the final seconds.
"The first person who knew about the money was already in our family," she repeated.
I looked at Dad.
"Who knew about Mom's account?""
He shook his head.
"Me. Michael. Rachel.""
"And Vanessa.""
"Yes.""
"Anyone else?""
Dad remained silent.
Then he looked at the photograph.
His expression changed.
"There's someone.""
"Who?""
He picked up the picture.
"Your grandfather.""
I frowned.
"Our grandfather died before Lily was born.""
"Your mother's father," Dad clarified.
"He helped set up the original trust.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Mom was standing beside him.
But something else caught my attention.
A woman was standing behind them.
An older woman with short silver hair.
I recognized her.
"That's Aunt Susan.""
Dad nodded.
"Your mother's sister.""
I stared at him.
"She knew about the account?""
"She helped Rachel manage the paperwork after your grandfather died.""
The detective looked between us.
"Does she still have access to any of the records?""
Dad shook his head.
"I don't know.""
I felt a cold sensation move through my body.
Aunt Susan had been looking after Lily all morning.
She'd comforted her.
She'd promised to keep her safe.
And now we were discovering that she might have known about the money from the beginning.
I pulled out my phone and called her.
She answered immediately.
"Hello, Ethan.""
"Hi. Is Lily there?""
"She's upstairs.""
"Can I speak to her?""
"She's resting.""
"Can you put her on?""
There was a pause.
Then Susan said, "Ethan, is something wrong?""
I looked at Detective Harris.
"Where are you?""
"I'm at home.""
"Is Lily with you?""
"Yes.""
I heard something in the background.
A door closing.
Then Susan's voice changed.
"Why are you asking so many questions?""
I stared at the phone.
"Because we found Mom's recordings.""
Silence.
Then she whispered:
"What recordings?""
"The ones she made before she died.""
Susan didn't answer.
I continued.
"She mentioned the trust. She mentioned Vanessa. She mentioned the person who introduced Vanessa to Dad.""
There was a long pause.
Then Susan said something that made my blood run cold.
"Your mother should have destroyed those recordings.""
Detective Harris immediately motioned for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
"Why?"" I asked.
Susan exhaled.
"Because some things are better left buried.""
"Did you know about the money?""
"I was trying to protect Rachel.""
"From whom?""
"From all of you.""
I stared at the phone.
"What does that mean?""
Susan's voice became cold.
"It means your mother wasn't innocent, Ethan.""
Dad moved closer.
"Put her on speaker.""
Susan heard him.
"David?""
"Where is Lily?""
"She's fine.""
"Put her on the phone.""
"No.""
Dad's face hardened.
"Why not?""
"Because I won't let you drag her into another one of your family's disasters.""
I looked at Detective Harris.
She was already making a note.
"Did you know Vanessa was taking money from Lily's account?"" I asked.
Susan didn't answer.
Then she said:
"I knew Vanessa was trying to get it back.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Get what back?""
"The money your mother stole.""
Dad grabbed the phone.
"Rachel never stole anything!""
Susan laughed bitterly.
"You really don't know, do you?""
"Tell me where Lily is.""
"She's safe.""
"Put her on the phone!""
Susan ended the call.
Dad immediately dialed again.
This time, it went straight to voicemail.
Detective Harris stood.
"Nobody leaves. We're sending officers to your sister-in-law's address.""
Dad looked at me.
"Call Lily's phone.""
I dialed.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then someone answered.
But it wasn't Lily.
It was Vanessa.
Her voice was soft.
Almost cheerful.
"Hello, Ethan.""
My blood ran cold.
"Where is my sister?""
Vanessa laughed quietly.
"You're asking the wrong question.""
"Put Lily on the phone.""
"Your aunt is going to explain everything.""
"Vanessa, if you touch her—"
She interrupted.
"Your mother made the same mistake you did.""
I heard Lily crying faintly in the background.
Then Vanessa said:
"She thought the truth would save her.""
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Dad was already shouting for the detective.
But before anyone could move, another message appeared.
It was a photograph.
Lily was sitting in the back seat of a car.
Her face was wet with tears.
Beside her was Aunt Susan.
And beneath the photograph were eight words.
*Bring the original trust documents, or Lily disappears.*
I looked at Dad.
His face had become terrifyingly calm.
He turned toward Detective Harris.
"Tell me what to do.""
She took the phone from my hand.
"Do not contact them. We're treating this as an immediate emergency.""
Then she looked at us.
"And Mr. Carter, there's something you need to understand.""
"What?""
"If Susan and Vanessa are working together, this isn't just about money anymore.""
She pointed toward the photograph.
"It's about whatever your wife discovered before she died.""
Dad stared at Lily's terrified face.
Then he whispered:
"Whatever Rachel was trying to protect, they still haven't found it.""
And somewhere in the middle of that nightmare, I finally understood the most frightening possibility.
Vanessa hadn't spent six years hiding what happened to our mother simply because she feared prison.
May you like
She had spent six years making sure nobody discovered what Rachel had managed to leave behind.
And now she believed Lily was the last person who could lead us to it.
