Chapter 7: My Uncle's Confession
For almost a full minute, nobody spoke.
My father stood beneath the attic window, staring at the message on his phone.
Outside, a lawn mower buzzed somewhere down the street. A delivery truck reversed into a neighbor's driveway. Ordinary Saturday morning sounds.
But inside our house, everything we'd believed about our family was falling apart.
I took the phone from Dad.
*David, I know you've found the recordings. Don't involve the police. You need to hear my side before you destroy this family.*
And beneath it:
*It wasn't Vanessa who was with Rachel on the road that night. It was me.*
I read the messages again.
"Why would Uncle Michael be with Mom?""
Dad rubbed his forehead.
"I don't know.""
"You just told me he went to the house.""
"I know what I told you.""
"Then what happened?""
He looked at the damaged recording.
"I need to speak to him.""
I stepped between him and the attic stairs.
"Not alone.""
"Ethan, he's my brother.""
"And Vanessa was your wife. Look how that turned out.""
Dad flinched.
I immediately regretted the words, but I didn't take them back.
He stared at me.
"You're right.""
He dialed Michael's number.
The call connected after two rings.
"David?""
Dad put the phone on speaker.
"What happened that night?""
There was a pause.
"I knew you'd eventually ask.""
"Don't play games with me, Michael.""
"I never wanted this.""
"What happened to Rachel?""
Another silence.
Then Michael exhaled.
"I need to see you.""
"Answer the question.""
"I can't explain this over the phone.""
I leaned toward the device.
"Did you leave Mom on the road?""
Michael went quiet.
"Who's that?""
"Ethan.""
"Oh, God.""
"Answer me.""
Michael's voice became strained.
"I didn't hurt your mother.""
"Then why were you there?""
"I was trying to help her.""
Dad gripped the phone.
"Help her with what?""
"Vanessa.""
The name seemed to change the temperature of the attic.
Michael continued.
"Rachel called me because she had discovered something. She was frightened, David. She said Vanessa had been taking money from Lily's account and had been threatening her.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"I know about the money.""
"No. You don't know everything.""
"Then tell me.""
Michael hesitated.
"Vanessa had been pressuring Rachel to sign documents. Rachel refused. They argued, and Rachel told me she wanted to meet somewhere away from the house.""
"Where?""
"At the old service road behind the shopping center.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
That road ran alongside a stretch of trees near the highway.
It was poorly lit and rarely used after dark.
"What happened there?"" I asked.
Michael's voice cracked.
"Rachel was already waiting when I arrived. She had a folder with her. She was crying.""
Dad sat down.
"Why didn't you call me?""
"Because she told me not to.""
"She's my wife!""
"I know!""
Michael's shout echoed through the phone.
Then he lowered his voice.
"She said you wouldn't believe her. She said Vanessa had already convinced you that she was unstable and jealous.""
Dad stared at the floor.
Michael continued.
"Rachel wanted me to take the documents to a lawyer. She was planning to file a report the next morning.""
"And Vanessa?""
"She showed up.""
My heart began pounding.
"How?""
"I don't know. Rachel thought someone had followed her.""
Dad stood.
"Did Vanessa hurt her?""
"I saw them arguing. Vanessa grabbed the folder. Rachel tried to take it back.""
"Then what?""
Michael took a shaky breath.
"There was a car.""
"What car?""
"A dark SUV. It came around the bend too fast. Rachel stepped backward. I shouted at her.""
Dad gripped the edge of the wooden chair.
"Did it hit her?""
"No. She moved.""
"Then what happened?""
Michael's voice broke.
"She fell.""
I looked at Dad.
He had gone completely pale.
"How?"" I demanded.
Michael didn't answer immediately.
"Michael!"" Dad shouted.
"I pushed her.""
The words seemed to stop time.
Dad's mouth opened.
No sound came out.
I stepped closer to the phone.
"You what?""
Michael began speaking rapidly.
"She was trying to run into the road. I grabbed her arm. I was trying to stop her. She fell backward, hit her head, and collapsed.""
Dad shook his head.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Vanessa said Rachel was already dying.""
"That doesn't make sense.""
"She told me Rachel had been bleeding internally. She said an ambulance was coming.""
"Was one coming?""
Michael went silent.
Then he whispered, "No.""
Dad stumbled backward.
I caught his arm.
"What did you do?""
Michael started crying.
"I panicked. Vanessa told me to leave. She said she'd handle everything.""
"You left my wife on the ground?""
"I thought she was getting help!""
"You thought?""
Dad's voice broke into a shout.
"Michael, she was the mother of my children!""
"I know!""
"Then why didn't you call me?""
Michael was sobbing now.
"Because Vanessa told me she had already spoken to you!""
Dad froze.
"What?""
"She said you knew about the accident. She said you were coming. She told me not to make things worse.""
I stared at the phone.
"Uncle Michael, did you see an ambulance?""
"No.""
"Did you see Vanessa call one?""
"No.""
"Then how do you know Mom was getting help?""
He didn't answer.
Dad ended the call.
For several seconds, he stood motionless.
Then he walked out of the attic.
I followed him downstairs.
He sat at the dining table, staring at an old family photograph.
It showed Mom holding Lily as a baby, while Michael stood beside Dad with his arm around both of them.
"How long have you known?"" I asked.
Dad shook his head.
"I knew something happened that night. Michael told me he'd found Rachel near the road. He said he'd tried to help her.""
"And you believed him?""
"I was told she'd been taken to the hospital.""
"By whom?""
Dad looked at me.
"Vanessa.""
I felt anger rise in my chest.
"So she lied to you, Michael lied to you, and you never checked?""
Dad closed his eyes.
"I was told your mother had died before I got there.""
I stared at him.
"Did you see her?""
He nodded slowly.
"At the hospital.""
"Did you ask the doctors what happened?""
"Yes.""
"And?""
"They said she had suffered a serious head injury.""
"Did they say she was hit by a car?""
Dad looked away.
"No.""
The silence was unbearable.
I sat across from him.
"Dad, what aren't you telling me?""
He reached into his wallet and removed an old photograph.
It showed Mom sitting on the porch, holding a cup of tea.
On the back was a date.
The day she died.
Dad turned it over.
"Vanessa told me Rachel had been found near the road. Michael told me he had called for help. I believed them because I couldn't imagine either of them lying about something like that.""
He placed the photograph on the table.
"But there was something else.""
"What?""
"The hospital records.""
He stood and walked to the study.
I followed.
He opened an old filing cabinet and pulled out a folder marked *Rachel Carter - Medical.*
Inside were discharge forms, medical bills, and a death certificate.
Dad flipped through them until he found a report.
He handed it to me.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
My eyes stopped at a line near the bottom.
*Patient arrived with severe head trauma. Initial emergency call received at 10:47 p.m. Patient pronounced deceased at 11:32 p.m.*
I read it again.
"Where was Mom found?""
Dad pointed to another page.
"At the service road.""
I looked at the emergency call time.
"Then why did Michael say he was waiting for an ambulance?""
Dad didn't answer.
I kept reading.
The report mentioned that the emergency call had been made by an unidentified female.
Not Michael.
Not Dad.
An unidentified female.
I looked up.
"Who called?""
Dad shook his head.
"I don't know.""
I photographed the page.
Then I noticed another detail.
The incident report had a handwritten note attached.
*Caller stated victim had fallen after an argument. No vehicle impact witnessed.*
My stomach dropped.
"Someone told the ambulance service Mom fell.""
Dad took the paper.
His fingers trembled.
"Yes.""
"And Michael admitted he pushed her.""
Dad sat down.
The front door suddenly opened.
Lily had returned with Aunt Susan.
She came into the living room carrying her backpack.
"Hey," she said softly.
Dad immediately stood.
"Sweetheart.""
She noticed his expression.
"What happened?""
He crouched in front of her.
"Nothing you need to worry about right now.""
But Lily saw the medical report in my hand.
Her face went white.
"Did you find out?""
I looked at her.
"Find out what?""
She swallowed.
"Who was with Mom when she fell.""
Dad slowly turned toward her.
"Lily, what do you know?""
She looked down.
Then she whispered something that made both of us freeze.
"Vanessa told me she pushed Mom.""
May you like
And before Dad could ask another question, Lily added:
"But she said Uncle Michael was the one who made sure Mom never came home.""
