Amused

Chapter 3: The Night Nobody Was Allowed to Discuss

Dad's truck pulled into the driveway at 10:41 a.m.

I was waiting near the front door.

He stepped inside wearing his work jacket, holding a set of rolled-up blueprints.

"Where's Vanessa?""

"She left.""

His eyebrows pulled together.

"What do you mean, she left?""

"She grabbed her handbag and walked out.""

"Why?""

I held up my phone.

"Because she knows I have the recordings.""

Dad stared at the screen.

"What recordings?""

I took a breath.

"Come into the kitchen.""

He followed me.

Lily was sitting at the dining table, her hands wrapped around a glass of water.

Dad stopped when he saw her.

"Sweetheart, what's wrong?""

She looked down.

"Nothing.""

He crouched beside her chair.

"Hey. Talk to me.""

"I'm okay.""

He touched her shoulder.

"Your brother sounded worried. What happened?""

Lily's eyes moved toward me.

I nodded.

"It's okay.""

Dad stood.

"All right, Ethan. Show me.""

I unlocked my phone and opened the first recording.

The video began with Vanessa standing beside the refrigerator.

Lily was asking for leftover pasta.

Then came Vanessa's voice.

"You can eat when you learn to respect me.""

Dad frowned.

"What's this?""

"Keep watching.""

The recording continued.

He watched Lily apologize.

He watched Vanessa put the food away.

He watched Lily leave the kitchen without eating.

His expression changed.

"Was this yesterday?""

"Thursday.""

I opened another recording.

This time, Vanessa was blocking Lily from getting water.

Dad leaned closer to the screen.

"Turn it up.""

I increased the volume.

"Please. I'm thirsty.""

"I don't care.""

Dad stopped moving.

The video ended.

For several seconds, the kitchen was completely silent.

Then he looked at me.

"How long has this been happening?""

"At least two weeks. Probably longer.""

His face went pale.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

I glanced at Lily.

"She was threatened.""

Dad turned toward her.

"What?""

Lily stared at her hands.

"Vanessa said you'd send me away if I told you.""

Dad's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I showed him the video of the toast.

He watched Vanessa throw the food into the trash.

He watched her tell Lily she didn't deserve breakfast.

Then he lowered the phone.

"Where is she?""

"I told you. She left.""

"Call her.""

"Not yet.""

Dad looked at me.

"She's my wife, Ethan.""

"And Lily is your daughter.""

The words hung between us.

Dad's shoulders dropped.

He looked at Lily again.

"Sweetheart, why didn't you come to me?""

Her chin began trembling.

"Because she said you wouldn't believe me.""

"Who said that?""

"Vanessa.""

Dad closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like a man who had been struck somewhere he couldn't reach.

Then Lily spoke again.

"She said you would think I was lying because I never liked her.""

Dad knelt beside her.

"Listen to me. I believe you.""

Lily started crying.

He wrapped his arms around her.

"I'm so sorry.""

She clung to him.

I stood near the counter, watching my father hold his daughter as though he could somehow undo every awful thing she'd experienced.

Then he noticed the metal bowl near the pantry.

It was normally used for our golden retriever, Max.

Dad frowned.

"Why is Max's bowl here?""

I hadn't noticed it before.

I looked toward the floor.

There was a scattering of dry dog food beside it.

Lily immediately pulled away from Dad.

He saw her expression.

"What's wrong?""

She shook her head.

"Lily?""

"Nothing.""

Dad picked up the bowl.

"Why is this here?""

I felt my stomach drop.

Because I suddenly understood what Vanessa had been planning.

She had intended to use the bowl as another punishment.

But Dad was already looking at the dog food.

He turned toward me.

"Show me everything else.""

I opened the recording from that morning.

The camera showed Vanessa standing beside the counter.

Lily was holding the half piece of toast.

Vanessa took it and threw it away.

Then she walked toward the pantry.

She returned carrying Max's metal bowl.

She placed it on the floor.

My father's hand tightened around the phone.

On the recording, Vanessa pointed toward the bowl.

"Since you think you can take food whenever you want, you can eat what you've earned.""

Lily stood motionless.

Vanessa picked up a handful of kibble and dropped it into the bowl.

"Get down.""

Dad's face turned red.

The recording continued.

Lily whispered, "Please don't make me.""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Do you want me to call your father and tell him how impossible you've become?""

Lily shook her head.

"Then get down.""

The next few seconds were almost unbearable.

Lily slowly lowered herself toward the floor.

Then Vanessa shoved the bowl toward her.

The metal scraped loudly against the tile.

I heard my father's breath catch.

On the screen, I appeared from the hallway.

I stepped between Vanessa and Lily.

"Don't you dare.""

Vanessa turned.

"Move, Ethan.""

"No.""

"She's being punished.""

"She's not a dog.""

The recording ended.

Dad stared at the black screen.

Then he looked at Lily.

"Did she make you eat it?""

Lily shook her head.

"No. Ethan stopped her.""

Dad stood.

He looked at the empty doorway.

"She's my daughter!""

His shout echoed through the house.

He slammed the phone onto the counter, then immediately picked it up again as though he was afraid the recordings might disappear.

"How could she do this?""

I stepped closer.

"There's something else.""

I told him what Vanessa had said before leaving.

About Mom.

About the night she died.

Dad's expression changed so suddenly that I noticed it immediately.

"What exactly did she say?""

"She told me to ask you about the night Mom died.""

He looked away.

"That's not something she should have brought up.""

"Why?""

"Because it's none of her business.""

"Then why did she say it?""

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"Ethan, your mother was sick. We went through a difficult time. That's all.""

I stared at him.

"That's all?""

He didn't answer.

Lily had become very still.

Dad turned toward her.

"Sweetheart, do you know what Vanessa was talking about?""

She didn't move.

"Lily?""

Her fingers tightened around the glass.

"I don't want to talk about it.""

Dad crouched again.

"Whatever it is, you can tell me.""

She shook her head.

"Please don't.""

I sat beside her.

"Nobody is going to punish you.""

Her breathing became faster.

"She told me not to tell.""

Dad looked confused.

"Who?""

"Vanessa.""

"About what?""

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"About that night.""

My father sat down across from her.

"What night, sweetheart?""

She looked at him.

Then at me.

Then toward the hallway, as though Vanessa might suddenly appear.

"Mom's last night.""

The room went silent.

Dad's face lost its color.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"What about it?"" I asked.

Lily pressed her palms against her eyes.

"I heard them arguing.""

Dad stopped breathing.

"Who?""

"Mom and Vanessa.""

I looked at my father.

He shook his head slowly.

"No. That can't be right.""

Lily began crying harder.

"I was awake. I heard Mom crying.""

Dad reached for her hand.

"Sweetheart, Vanessa wasn't there that night.""

Lily pulled away.

"She was.""

My father stood so quickly that his chair scraped backward.

"That's impossible.""

Lily shook her head.

"I saw her.""

Dad looked at me.

His eyes were wide, almost pleading.

"Your mother was alone that evening. I was at the hospital with my brother.""

Lily whispered, "You weren't alone, Dad.""

He turned toward her.

"What?""

"You weren't at the hospital when Mom called you.""

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything I'd ever experienced.

Dad slowly sat down again.

"What did you just say?""

Lily wiped her cheeks.

"Mom called you. I heard her leave a voicemail.""

I looked at Dad.

He stared at Lily as though he had never heard her speak before.

"Did you listen to that voicemail?""

She nodded.

"Did you tell anyone?""

"Vanessa found out.""

Dad's voice became barely audible.

"How?""

Lily looked toward the stairs.

"She took Mom's old phone after the funeral. She told me that if I ever mentioned the voicemail, she'd tell you I made it up.""

My father covered his mouth.

I felt my hands beginning to shake.

"What was in the voicemail, Lily?""

She looked at me.

Then at Dad.

And when she finally spoke, her words changed everything I thought I knew about our family.

"Mom said Vanessa was coming to the house that night. She said she was afraid of what Vanessa might do.""

Dad stood up again.

"No.""

Lily started crying.

"She told you she needed help.""

Dad shook his head repeatedly.

"No, no. I never got that message.""

I reached for his phone.

"Then where is it?""

He stared at me.

For a long moment, he didn't answer.

Then he walked to the study, opened an old wooden drawer, and pulled out a small envelope.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper.

He unfolded it with trembling fingers.

It was a printed message from an unknown number, dated the evening our mother died.

Dad read it silently.

Then his knees seemed to weaken.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He handed me the paper.

There were only two sentences.

I know what Rachel told you. If you want Lily to stay safe, stop asking questions.

Below the message was a name.

Vanessa.

But what frightened me most wasn't the threat.

It was the date.

The message had been sent three hours before our mother died.

And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa had spent six years making sure Lily never spoke about that night.

Because whatever happened to our mother wasn't the only secret she'd been protecting.

My father stared at the paper.

Then he whispered, "There's something I never told either of you about your mother's final hours.""

May you like

And before he could explain, his phone began ringing.

The caller ID showed Vanessa's name.
