Chapter 6: The Secret Inside the Safe
The bank opened at nine.
Dad arrived twenty minutes early.
He hadn't slept.
Neither had I.
Lily was staying with our aunt Susan, who had agreed to keep her for a few days while the police investigated. She had cried when we left, but Dad promised he'd call every hour.
I understood why.
For six years, Lily had been afraid that telling the truth would cost her the only family she had left.
We weren't going to make her feel abandoned now.
The safe-deposit manager led us into a small private room.
"Mr. Carter, I have the records here," she said.
"The box was registered jointly under your name and your late wife's.""
Dad nodded.
"Can we access it?""
"Of course. I'll need your identification and the key.""
Dad placed the old brass key on the counter.
The manager checked it against her records.
Then she disappeared into a secure room.
A few minutes later, she returned carrying a small metal box.
Dad opened it.
Inside were three envelopes, a USB drive, a folded document, and a small silver bracelet.
I recognized the bracelet immediately.
It had belonged to Mom.
Lily used to wear it around the house when she was little, pretending it was a magical bracelet that protected her from monsters.
Dad picked it up.
His eyes filled.
"She put this here?""
I nodded.
"Looks like it.""
He placed it carefully beside the envelopes.
The first envelope contained bank statements.
The second held copies of legal documents.
The third had my name written on the front.
Dad looked at me.
"That's for you.""
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Ethan, if you are reading this, then something has happened that I hoped would never happen. I know you're young, but I've always known how fiercely you love your sister. Please don't let anyone convince you that protecting her means carrying every burden alone.
My throat tightened.
I continued.
Your father loves you both. But sometimes good people are so frightened of losing happiness that they fail to see when someone is destroying it.
I stopped reading.
Dad looked away.
There was more.
If Vanessa ever becomes part of your lives, please be careful. She is very good at making people believe that she is helping them.
I looked at my father.
He was staring at the letter.
"Your mother knew," he whispered.
I continued reading.
I discovered that she had been trying to gain access to the children's accounts. I also found evidence that she had submitted documents using my signature without my permission.
The final paragraph was underlined.
If anything happens to me, ask Margaret about the recording. She knows where I left the original.
I lowered the letter.
"The recording?""
Dad opened the second envelope.
There was a document naming Margaret Ellis as the custodian of a digital file.
He picked up his phone.
"Call her.""
I dialed.
Margaret answered almost immediately.
"Ethan?""
"Hi. We're at the bank. We found Mom's safe.""
There was a long silence.
"Then you found the letter.""
"Yes. She mentioned a recording.""
Margaret exhaled.
"I was hoping you'd never need it.""
"Do you have it?""
"I do.""
"Can you send it to us?""
"Not over email. It's too important. I'll meet you.""
Dad took the phone.
"Margaret, it's David.""
"Hello, David.""
"Please tell me what that recording contains.""
Her voice became quiet.
"Rachel recorded a conversation with Vanessa.""
"When?""
"The night before she died.""
Dad closed his eyes.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried. Vanessa told me you'd asked everyone to leave you alone. And after the funeral, I received a warning.""
"What kind of warning?""
"An envelope containing photographs of my house and my daughter's school.""
I stared at Dad.
Margaret continued.
"I was frightened. I had my own family to protect.""
Dad's voice softened.
"I'm sorry.""
"Don't apologize to me. Just listen to that recording.""
We arranged to meet at a café near Margaret's house.
She arrived carrying a small leather purse.
She looked older than I remembered.
Her hair was almost entirely gray, and she walked with a slight limp.
But her eyes were sharp.
She hugged Dad.
Then she looked at me.
"You've grown up, Ethan.""
I gave her a tired smile.
"Not enough to understand any of this.""
She placed a small USB drive on the table.
"This is a copy. I kept the original locked away.""
Dad stared at it.
"Have you listened to it?""
"Once.""
"What does it say?""
Margaret shook her head.
"I'd rather you hear it yourself.""
Dad connected the USB drive to his laptop.
A file appeared.
*Rachel_Recording_02-14.*
The date was the night before Mom died.
Dad clicked play.
At first, there was only static.
Then we heard Mom's voice.
"Vanessa, I know about the transfer.""
Another woman's voice answered.
Vanessa.
"Rachel, you don't understand what you're looking at.""
"I understand perfectly. That's Lily's money.""
"David gave me permission.""
"No, he didn't.""
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
"You always did enjoy making yourself the victim.""
Mom sounded tired.
"I want the money returned. I also want you to stay away from my children.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You can't tell me what to do.""
"I can tell David.""
"David won't believe you.""
"He will when he sees the documents.""
The recording crackled.
Then came a sound like a chair moving.
Vanessa's voice grew louder.
"You're going to ruin everything.""
Mom answered quietly.
"You ruined it yourself.""
There was another pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made Dad grip the edge of the table.
"Do you think anyone will believe you if you tell them what really happened?""
Mom replied.
"I don't need anyone to believe me. I have proof.""
The recording ended.
Dad sat completely still.
Margaret looked down.
"That's all I have.""
I stared at the laptop.
"Why is it called Recording 02?""
Margaret blinked.
"What?""
"The file name. Recording 02. Was there a first one?""
She hesitated.
"Rachel made several recordings.""
"How many?""
"Three, I believe.""
Dad looked up.
"Where are the others?""
Margaret shook her head.
"I only received that one.""
I leaned forward.
"Who has the rest?""
Margaret looked toward the window.
"Rachel told me she'd hidden copies somewhere in the house. She said she wanted them close enough to find, but far enough away that Vanessa wouldn't discover them.""
Dad went pale.
"The house.""
I remembered Lily's sketchbook.
The drawing of the woman outside our front door.
The black phone.
And the words underneath.
The woman who came back.
"Could the other recordings be at home?"" I asked.
Margaret nodded.
"Possibly.""
Dad thanked her.
Then we returned to the house.
We searched Mom's bedroom first.
We checked drawers, wardrobes, and the old jewelry cabinet.
Nothing.
We searched the study.
Nothing.
Then Dad remembered something.
"Your mother used to keep a box of letters in the attic.""
I looked up.
"Why didn't we check there?""
"Because I thought I'd thrown everything away after the funeral.""
We climbed the stairs.
The attic smelled of dust and old cardboard.
Sunlight came through a small round window.
There were boxes stacked against the walls, most labeled with Mom's handwriting.
Christmas decorations.
Family photographs.
Children's clothes.
And one marked *Lily's First Years.*
Dad opened it.
Inside were baby blankets, birthday cards, and photographs.
At the bottom was a small wooden music box.
Lily's favorite.
Dad picked it up.
"Your mother used to play this when she couldn't get her to sleep.""
He opened the lid.
A familiar melody began.
Then stopped.
Something rattled inside.
I turned it over.
There was a tiny screw beneath the base.
I removed it with a screwdriver from my toolbox.
A narrow compartment opened.
Inside was another USB drive.
And a folded piece of paper.
Dad unfolded it.
The message was short.
If Vanessa comes back, do not trust what she tells you about the night I died.
Dad looked at me.
"She knew.""
I picked up the USB drive.
There were two files.
*Recording_01.*
*Recording_03.*
My hands were shaking.
We played the first.
Mom's voice filled the attic.
"David, if you're hearing this, I need you to know that I tried to tell you.""
Dad covered his mouth.
"I found out Vanessa had been using Lily's name to open accounts. She told me she was helping with investments, but the statements don't match.""
A pause.
Then Mom continued.
"I confronted her today. She admitted she had been moving money. She said she would return it, but I don't believe her.""
The recording ended.
We opened the third file.
This one began with the sound of a door closing.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"Give me the documents.""
Mom answered.
"No.""
"Rachel, don't make this difficult.""
"Get out of my house.""
"You don't own everything here.""
"I own my children's future. And I won't let you steal it.""
Then came a sound.
A loud crash.
Dad stood.
"What was that?""
The recording continued.
Vanessa's voice was shaking now.
"You shouldn't have done that.""
Mom answered.
"Stay away from me.""
Then the file ended abruptly.
I stared at the screen.
"Where's the rest?""
Dad clicked the file again.
It stopped at exactly the same point.
There was a second file in the folder, but it was damaged.
The filename read:
*Recording_03_CONTINUED_CORRUPTED.*
Dad tried opening it.
Nothing happened.
I examined the file information.
It appeared to have been partially overwritten.
But the final few seconds contained something.
A faint sound.
A car engine.
Then a voice.
A man's voice.
"Rachel, get away from the road!""
Dad went completely still.
I looked at him.
"Who was that?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
But he looked as though he recognized something.
"David?""
He closed the laptop.
"I need to make a call.""
"To whom?""
He hesitated.
Then he said, "My brother.""
I frowned.
"Uncle Michael?""
Dad nodded.
I remembered what he'd told us six years earlier.
That he had been at the hospital with Michael the night Mom died.
But the recording contained a man's voice near the road.
And now Dad seemed terrified of identifying it.
I stepped closer.
"You said you were at the hospital that night.""
"I was.""
"Then why would Uncle Michael be near Mom?""
Dad looked at me.
His eyes were wet.
"Because he wasn't at the hospital with me.""
I felt the floor shift beneath my feet.
"What?""
Dad lowered himself onto an old wooden chair.
"Your mother called me that night. She told me Vanessa was at the house and that something was wrong.""
"Why didn't you tell us?""
"Because I didn't answer.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
He pressed his hands together.
"I was angry with Rachel. We'd argued earlier that evening. She'd accused Vanessa of stealing money, and I thought she was exaggerating.""
My chest tightened.
"Then what happened?""
Dad's voice cracked.
"Your mother called again. I ignored it. Then she called Michael.""
"Uncle Michael?""
He nodded.
"He went to the house.""
I looked at the laptop.
The man's voice in the recording.
"Was that him?""
Dad didn't answer.
He stared at the attic floor.
Then his phone rang.
A message appeared from an unfamiliar number.
*David, I know you've found the recordings. Don't involve the police. You need to hear my side before you destroy this family.*
There was another message immediately afterward.
*It wasn't Vanessa who was with Rachel on the road that night. It was me.*
Dad read it twice.
Then he whispered the name.
"Michael.""
And for the first time since this nightmare began, I realized Vanessa might not have been the only person who had been lying to us.
May you like
Because the man who claimed to have been at the hospital that night had just admitted he was somewhere else.
And he had been with our mother.
