Amused

Chapter 9: The Final Trap

Sarah thought she had won.

That was her biggest mistake.

People like Sarah always believe they are smarter than everyone else.

They confuse patience with weakness.

Kindness with stupidity.

Forgiveness with blindness.

But she didn’t know one thing.

I had spent my entire life watching my father build his business.

And he taught me something important.

Never fight someone emotionally.

Fight with evidence.

I secretly recorded Sarah’s confession in the warehouse.

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Sarah was arrested.

Nathan turned himself in.

But the damage she caused wasn’t over.

The investigation uncovered more.

Sarah had created fake documents.

Moved money.

Used Lily’s identity.

And manipulated Nathan through threats.

But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.

Why did Sarah believe she could take my money?

The answer came during the court hearing.

Sarah sat across from me.

Still calm.

Still confident.

Her lawyer argued that she had legal rights.

That she had been my father’s wife.

That everything was a misunderstanding.

Then my lawyer stood.

“Your Honor, we have new evidence.””

The room went quiet.

He presented the original property documents.

Then the forged versions.

Then the financial records.

Then the recording.

Sarah’s expression changed for the first time.

Fear.

The judge looked at her.

“Is this your voice?””

Sarah stayed silent.

Her lawyer whispered.

But she knew.

It was over.

After the hearing, she asked to speak with me.

I almost refused.

But I wanted one answer.

“Why Lily?””

Sarah looked at me.

“Because she was your weakness.””

I felt sick.

“She’s a child.””

“She’s an inheritance.””

I stared at her.

And that sentence explained everything.

Sarah never saw Lily as a person.

Only a door.

A way to reach money.

I walked away.

But before I left, Sarah called out.

“Ethan.””

I stopped.

“You think you’re better than me?””

I looked back.

“Yes.””

She smiled bitterly.

“Then why did you forgive Nathan?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I had asked myself the same question.

Nathan hurt us.

But unlike Sarah, he finally admitted the truth.

He accepted responsibility.

Months later, Nathan stood in front of me outside my house.

He looked different.

Older.

Humbled.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.””

I nodded.

“Good.””

He looked down.

“I just wanted you to know Dad was right about you.””

“What do you mean?””

“He said you would be the one to protect Lily.””

I looked toward the window.

Lily was inside drawing.

Safe.

Happy.

My father’s final wish had come true.

But then Nathan handed me one more envelope.

“What is this?””

“Something Dad left for you.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made me freeze.

“Ethan, if Sarah failed, there is still one secret you need to know.””

I read the next sentence.

And my entire world changed.

May you like

Because my father had not been hiding money.

He had been hiding the truth about Lily’s mother.
