Amused

Chapter 7: The Truth About My Father

I didn’t care about the threat.

Not because I wasn’t afraid.

I was.

Any parent who says they don’t feel fear when their child is in danger is lying.

But fear wasn’t going to stop me.

It was going to make me move faster.

I called my lawyer first.

Then I called the police.

Then I called Lily’s school and made sure no one except me was authorized to pick her up.

When I arrived home, Lily was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.

A normal child.

A normal morning.

She had no idea her family had been fighting a war around her.

“Daddy?””

I forced a smile.

“Yeah?””

“Are we moving?””

The question caught me off guard.

“Why would you ask that?””

She looked down.

“Because Grandma said this house wasn’t really ours.””

I sat beside her.

“Lily.””

She looked at me.

“This house is your home.””

“Forever?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

She smiled slightly.

And that smile reminded me why I couldn’t stop.

Later that afternoon, David came over.

I showed him the letter.

He read it silently.

When he finished, his face was pale.

“I was afraid this would happen.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Not everything.””

“But something.””

David sat down.

“Your father had concerns about Nathan.””

That hurt.

More than I expected.

“My brother?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he was your brother.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So Dad protected him.””

“He loved you both.””

I looked away.

David continued.

“But near the end, your father started documenting everything.””

“Why?””

“Because he realized Sarah wasn’t the only person manipulating him.””

I looked at the papers.

“Nathan changed his medication?””

David nodded slowly.

“He suspected Nathan was involved.””

My chest tightened.

“Suspected?””

“He never had proof.””

Then David opened the box again.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“This is why I came.””

“What is it?””

“Your father gave it to me two days before he died.””

My hands went cold.

“What did he say?””

David looked at me.

“He said if anything happened, I needed to give this to you.””

I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then my father’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably him.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened.””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing him again almost broke me.

“Ethan, I need you to understand something. Family doesn’t always mean loyalty.””

I looked at David.

The recording continued.

“I believe someone close to me is trying to take control of my finances. I don’t know who I can trust.””

A pause.

Then:

“Except you, Ethan.””

My throat tightened.

“Your daughter is the most important thing in my life after you. Protect her.””

The recording ended.

I sat there silently.

My father knew.

He knew something was wrong.

And he tried to warn me.

That evening, I received another message.

This time, it wasn’t a threat.

It was a photo.

A picture of Lily leaving school.

Taken that same day.

My blood turned cold.

Someone was watching her.

I called the police immediately.

Then another message appeared.

“You want the truth? Meet me alone.””

I stared at the screen.

A location appeared.

An abandoned warehouse outside town.

May you like

Then one final message:

“Come alone, or you’ll never find out what really happened to your father.””
