Chapter 4: The Secret My Father Left Behind
David had worked with my father for twenty-five years.
He wasn’t just a business partner.
He was family.
When I walked into the living room and saw him holding that box, I immediately knew something was wrong.
“David?””
He looked older than I remembered.
Tired.
Guilty.
“I should have come sooner.””
I looked at the box.
“What is that?””
He placed it on the table.
“Everything your father wanted you to have.””
I opened the box.
Inside were bank records.
Letters.
Photographs.
And one sealed envelope.
My name was written across it.
Again.
My father’s handwriting.
I looked at David.
“What is going on?””
He sighed.
“Your father knew Sarah was dangerous.””
The room felt colder.
“Then why did he marry her?””
David looked down.
“Because he thought he could help her.””
I almost laughed.
Help her?
While she was hurting my daughter?
David continued.
“Sarah wasn’t honest about her past.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
My father wrote:
“Ethan, if Sarah ever hurts Lily, I need you to know the truth.””
I stopped breathing.
The next lines explained everything.
Before Sarah met my father, she had been involved in financial fraud at another company.
My father discovered it.
But instead of reporting her, he tried to convince her to change.
He believed people deserved second chances.
His mistake was trusting her too much.
I looked up.
“She knew he found out.””
David nodded.
“She did.””
“Then why stay?””
David’s expression was painful.
“Because your father changed his will.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He planned to remove Sarah from everything if she continued lying.””
My hands tightened around the paper.
“She knew.””
“Yes.””
“And she tried to take everything before he could.””
David nodded.
At that moment, my phone rang.
It was my lawyer.
I answered immediately.
“Ethan, we found another issue.””
“What now?””
“The money Sarah took wasn’t just from your father.””
I looked at David.
“What do you mean?””
“She opened accounts using Lily’s information.””
I felt like the air disappeared.
“My daughter?””
“Yes.””
“She stole from my daughter?””
A silence followed.
Then my lawyer said:
“Ethan, there’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“The account was opened years ago.””
I frowned.
“That’s impossible. Lily is seven.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Exactly.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Sarah had been planning this long before my father died.

But the next discovery would reveal something even worse.
Something involving the person who was supposed to protect Lily.
