Chapter 8: The Warehouse Confession
I knew walking into that warehouse alone was a mistake.
Every logical part of my brain told me not to go.
But there are moments when logic loses against a question that has haunted you for months.
Why did my father die?
Who betrayed him?
And why was my daughter targeted?
I parked outside the abandoned building.
The windows were broken.
The walls were covered in old graffiti.
It looked like the kind of place where secrets disappeared.
I stepped inside.
“Nathan?””
My voice echoed.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then a light turned on.
Nathan stood near the back wall.
He looked exhausted.
Not confident.
Not dangerous.
Just broken.
“You came.””
I stared at him.
“You threatened my daughter.””
His face changed.
“I didn’t.””
“Someone using your information did.””
Nathan looked down.
“I know.””
“Then start talking.””
He rubbed his face.
“I never wanted any of this.””
I laughed.
“You helped Sarah steal from Lily.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
But it didn’t help.
“Why?””
Nathan looked away.
“Because I was drowning.””
I waited.
“My business failed. I owed people money. Sarah knew.””
“So she used you.””
“Yes.””
He swallowed.
“She came to me after Dad changed his will.””
I froze.
“He changed it?””
Nathan nodded.
“Dad planned to leave most of his estate to Lily.””
My daughter.
Not me.
Lily.
“Why?””
“Because he knew you would protect her. He wanted to make sure she would always have something.””
I closed my eyes.
My father.
Even after death, he was protecting her.
Nathan continued.
“Sarah told me if I helped her access certain documents, she would pay my debts.””
“And Dad’s medication?””
Nathan became silent.
That silence answered everything.
“Nathan.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t kill him.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
He looked at the floor.
“Sarah switched the pills.””
My heart stopped.
“She told me they were just making him weaker. She said she wanted him to sign documents while he was confused.””
“And you helped?””
“I gave her access.””
My anger exploded.
“You let her hurt him.””
“I know!””
Nathan shouted.
The sound filled the warehouse.
“I know what I did!””
For a moment, he looked like someone who hated himself.
“She told me after he died that she would expose me if I talked.””
I stepped closer.
“You should have talked.””
“I was scared.””
I shook my head.
“No. You were selfish.””
He looked away.
“You’re right.””
Then he pulled something from his jacket.
A small envelope.
“What is that?””
“The proof.””
I didn’t move.
“What proof?””
“Everything Sarah did.””
I took it.
Inside were bank records.
Messages.
Photos.
Enough to destroy her.
But before I could look through everything, a sound came from behind us.
A door closing.
Nathan’s face changed.
“She followed me.””
“What?””
Then Sarah stepped out of the shadows.
She was smiling.
Not afraid.
Not nervous.
Smiling.
“I wondered how long it would take you two to turn against each other.””
I stepped in front of Nathan.
“You threatened my daughter.””
Sarah tilted her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I protected myself.””
“You’re insane.””
She laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand, Ethan.””
She walked closer.
“Your father wasn’t my biggest problem.””
I stared at her.
“Then who was?””
Her smile disappeared.
“You.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You were always the obstacle.””
She pointed at the envelope.
“Because your father trusted you.””
Then she said the one thing that made me realize this was far from over.
“I didn’t plan to steal your father’s money.””
May you like
She smiled.
“I planned to take yours.””
