Chapter 6: The Money Hidden in Her Name
I barely had time to step away from the bedroom door before Vanessa pulled it open.
She stood in the doorway with her phone clutched in one hand.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Her eyes moved from my face to the staircase behind me.
Then she smiled.
It was the same smile she'd worn whenever my father entered a room.
“Emily,” she said sweetly.
“Were you looking for something?””
I stared at her.
“No.””
“Then why are you standing outside my bedroom?””
“I'm going downstairs.””
“Your room is the other way.””
“I know where my room is.””
Her smile vanished.
“Don't get clever with me.””
I stepped toward the stairs.
As I passed her, I heard her whisper into the phone.
“I'll call you back.””
She ended the call.
Then she followed me downstairs.
My father was in his office, speaking quietly to his attorney. The door was half-open, and I could hear him explaining the suspicious property transfer.
Vanessa stopped outside the office.
“David?””
He raised one finger, signaling that he was still on the call.
She waited impatiently.
When he finally ended it, she walked straight inside.
“We need to talk.””
My father remained behind his desk.
“I'm listening.””
“Alone.””
“No.””
She glanced at me.
“David, this is a private matter between husband and wife.””
“Not when it involves my daughter.””
Vanessa let out an irritated breath.
“Fine. Let her stay. I don't care anymore.””
She sat down without being invited.
Then she crossed her legs and arranged the hem of her dress.
“I want to explain the financial situation.””
My father folded his hands.
“Go ahead.””
“My debts began before we met. I invested in a business with a former partner, and it failed.””
“What business?””
“A boutique.””
“You told me you owned a successful retail business.””
“I did. For a while.””
“When did it fail?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Five years ago.””
My father stared at her.
“You told me you closed it because you wanted a change of career.””
“I didn't want to burden you with my past.””
“You didn't have to burden me. You could have told me the truth.””
She lowered her voice.
“I was afraid you'd think less of me.””
My father leaned back.
“So you hid two hundred and forty thousand dollars in debt?””
“I didn't know it was going to grow so large.””
“How much do you owe now?””
She looked at the floor.
“Two hundred and eighty thousand.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
My father slowly shook his head.
“And you thought borrowing against my house was the answer?””
“I had a plan.””
“What plan?””
“I would refinance the property, pay off my creditors, and make the monthly payments from my income.””
“What income?””
Vanessa stiffened.
“I have income.””
“From where?””
“I manage the household.””
“That isn't an income.””
She stared at him, offended.
“I have investments.””
“Which investments?””
She didn't answer.
My father picked up his phone.
“I'm going to ask my attorney to arrange a full review of our joint finances.””
Vanessa jumped to her feet.
“No!””
He looked up.
“Why not?””
“Because that's unnecessary.””
“Then it shouldn't concern you.””
She began pacing.
“David, I made mistakes. I admit that. But I was trying to solve them before they destroyed our marriage.””
“By transferring my property without permission?””
“I wasn't trying to steal from you!””
“Then why were you telling someone to move money tonight?””
Vanessa stopped.
I felt my pulse hammer in my ears.
She looked at me.
“What?””
My father stood.
“Emily heard you on the phone.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“She was eavesdropping.””
“What money were you talking about?””
“Nothing.””
“Nothing?””
“It was a personal conversation.””
“About moving money before I discovered another account?””
Vanessa looked as though she wanted to throw something.
Then she suddenly began crying.
“Do you know what it's like to live with the constant fear of losing everything?””
My father said nothing.
“I've spent years trying to keep my head above water. I thought marrying you would finally give me a chance to breathe.””
His expression remained unreadable.
“But you never made me feel secure,” she continued.
“You kept everything separate. Your house was yours. Your investments were yours. Even your daughter's future seemed more important than our marriage.””
I stared at her.
“You demanded money from me.””
She turned on me.
“Stay out of this!””
“No,” my father said sharply.
“You don't get to silence her.””
Vanessa recoiled.
My father continued.
“You married me knowing I had a daughter. You knew I had a house. You knew I had financial responsibilities. I never promised you ownership of everything I possessed.””
“You promised to take care of me!””
“I have.””
“Then prove it!””
The room went silent.
My father looked at her for a long time.
Finally, he said, “I think we need some distance from each other.””
Vanessa's face went pale.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I want you to stay somewhere else while my attorney investigates these documents.””
“You're kicking me out?””
“I'm asking you to leave voluntarily for now.””
“This is my home!””
My father gave a tired shake of his head.
“An hour ago, you told Emily the same thing about a house you said belonged to you. Now you want me to believe you respect my ownership.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then she turned toward me.
“This is what you wanted, isn't it? You wanted to destroy my marriage so you could have your father all to yourself.””
I looked at her in disbelief.
“I wanted you to stop hitting me and demanding money.””
“You've always hated me!””
“I tried to love you.””
The words escaped before I could stop them.
For the first time, Vanessa didn't immediately answer.
I continued, my voice trembling.
“When Dad married you, I bought you a gift. I wrote you a birthday card. I tried to include you in everything because I thought you were going to be part of our family.””
She stared at me.
“And you treated me like I was stealing something from you,” I said.
“You made me feel guilty for missing my mother. You told me I was taking up space. You threatened to throw me out of the only home I have left from her.””
My throat tightened.
“I never wanted your money, Vanessa. I never wanted your house. I just wanted you to stop treating me like I didn't belong.””
For a moment, the room was completely still.
Then Vanessa looked away.
“I'm sorry you feel that way.””
My father closed his eyes briefly.
“That's enough.””
He walked to the door and held it open.
“Pack a bag. You can stay with your sister for a few days.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You're serious.””
“Yes.””
She stood so abruptly that her chair scraped against the floor.
“You're going to regret humiliating me.””
My father didn't answer.
She snatched up her handbag and stormed out of the office.
A few seconds later, we heard her bedroom door slam.
My father lowered himself into his chair.
For the first time that evening, he looked old.
Not weak. Not defeated.
Just exhausted.
I approached his desk.
“Dad?””
He looked up.
“I'm sorry.””
His brow furrowed.
“Why are you apologizing?””
“Because I should have told you about the camera sooner.””
He shook his head.
“Emily, you shouldn't have had to install a camera to feel safe in your own home.””
I sat in the chair opposite him.
He reached across the desk and took my hand.
“I should have listened to you when you told me something was wrong.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you'd believe her.””
He squeezed my fingers.
“I know.””
We sat quietly for a moment.
Then his phone rang.
He checked the screen and frowned.
“It's my attorney.””
He answered.
“Hello, Mark. Yes, I've got the documents in front of me.””
He listened.
His expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
Another pause.
“No, I never authorized that.””
He stood and walked toward the window.
“Then put a hold on everything immediately.””
My heart began pounding.
“What is it?”” I whispered.
He raised a hand for me to wait.
“Yes,” he continued into the phone.
“I understand. Send me the filing information. I'll come to your office first thing tomorrow.””
He ended the call.
I stood.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“The property transfer was submitted to the county records office yesterday.””
My blood ran cold.
“But you didn't sign it.””
“I know.””
“Can they transfer the house without your permission?””
“They shouldn't be able to. But my attorney wants to verify exactly what was submitted and whether anyone has attempted to secure a loan against the property.””
I thought of the phone call I'd overheard.
I need you to move the money tonight.
“Dad, I heard Vanessa say something else.””
He turned toward me.
“What?””
“She said she needed someone to move the money before you found the other account.””
His expression tightened.
“Did she mention a bank?””
“No.””
“Or an amount?””
“No. She just said, 'If he finds the other account, we're finished.''”
My father walked back to his desk and opened his laptop.
He logged into his banking portal and began reviewing the accounts he shared with Vanessa.
At first, everything appeared normal.
The household account held the expected balance. The mortgage payments had been made. The utility bills were current.
Then he opened the investment account.
His face went blank.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He clicked through several transactions.
A withdrawal of $15,000.
Another for $22,000.
Then $18,500.
The transfers stretched back several months.
I covered my mouth.
“Dad…”
He checked the dates.
Some of the withdrawals had occurred while he was traveling. Others had taken place on ordinary weekdays when he had been at work.
He opened another tab.
Then another.
Finally, he sat back.
“Forty-seven thousand dollars,” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“What?””
“That's how much has been transferred out of our joint accounts over the last six months.””
“Can Vanessa do that?””
“She has access to the joint account. I need to establish whether every transaction was authorized and where the money went.””
He picked up his phone again and called the bank.
While he spoke to a representative, I noticed a notification appear on the laptop.
It was an email from the bank.
The subject line read: *Additional Account Holder Request—Verification Required.*
My father opened it.
The message explained that someone had recently requested access to an account connected to his financial profile.
The name listed as the requested account holder was Vanessa Miller.
But it was the account's balance that made him stop speaking.
I leaned forward.
“Dad, what is it?””
He turned the screen toward me.
The account was not a joint account.
It was a separate account in Vanessa's name.
And the balance was $312,400.
I stared at the number.
“Where did she get that much money?””
My father looked through the email again.
Then he clicked the attached transaction summary.
A list of deposits appeared.
Some were small.
Others were in the thousands.
And several matched the amounts he'd just discovered missing from their joint accounts.
My father gripped the edge of the desk.
“She's been moving our money into her personal account.””
I felt sick.
“Then the debt…”
“We don't know the whole story yet.””
He enlarged the transaction list.
Near the bottom was a deposit of $25,000 made just eleven days earlier.
The reference field contained a name.
Richard Cole.
My father stared at it.
Then he looked at me.
“Emily, I need you to tell me exactly what you heard in that recording.””
I repeated the conversation as best I could.
He listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he looked at the screen again.
“If Richard is helping her move money, I want to know why.””
He began taking screenshots and saving copies of the documents.
Then another email arrived.
This one was from the county records office.
My father opened it.
The message confirmed that the property transfer had been flagged for review after a discrepancy was detected in the submitted documentation.
Below that was a notice that made the room seem to tilt around me.
An application had also been filed for a loan secured against the property.
The requested amount was $300,000.
And the applicant wasn't Vanessa.
It was a company I'd never heard of.
*Cole Financial Holdings.*
My father stared at the screen.
Then he whispered, “What has my wife gotten us into?””
From upstairs came the sound of a suitcase being dragged across the floor.
Vanessa was packing.
My father reached for his phone.
Before he could dial, a new message appeared on the laptop.
It was from an unknown sender.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.

Only one sentence.
*If you want to know what Vanessa really did with your money, ask her what happened to the inheritance from Emily's mother.*
