Chapter 2: The Man in the Doorway
“What the hell is going on?””
My father's voice came from the hallway.
I turned so quickly that my shoulder struck the edge of the kitchen cabinet.
David stood in the doorway wearing his charcoal work suit, his tie loosened and his leather briefcase hanging from one hand. He looked tired, as though he'd spent the entire day fighting his way through meetings.
Then his eyes landed on me.
He saw my red cheek.
He saw the crumpled paper on the table.
And he saw Vanessa standing between us with her arms folded, wearing an expression of wounded innocence.
For one brief second, I thought everything would be all right.
“Dad—”
Vanessa rushed toward him.
“David, thank goodness you're home.””
She placed one hand on his chest and let out a shaky breath.
“Something terrible has happened.””
My father set down his briefcase.
“What happened to Emily's face?””
Vanessa's hand flew to her mouth.
“Oh, that? She got upset and started yelling. I tried to calm her down, but she became aggressive.””
I stared at her.
“You slapped me!””
Vanessa flinched as if I'd shouted directly into her ear.
“David, listen to her! She's completely out of control.””
My father looked from Vanessa to me.
“Emily, lower your voice.””
The words struck harder than I expected.
“Dad, she hit me first!””
“Enough,” Vanessa interrupted.
“I told you she was upset. She's been accusing me of trying to steal your house.””
“Because she said it's hers!”” I cried.
Vanessa shook her head sadly.
“See? This is exactly what I've been dealing with.””
My father rubbed his forehead.
“Can somebody please explain what happened without shouting?””
“I can,” I said, forcing myself to breathe.
“She demanded two thousand dollars from me to live here. When I refused, she slapped me.””
Vanessa gave a disbelieving laugh.
“That's ridiculous.””
I pointed at the paper.
“It's right there!””
My father glanced at the table.
Vanessa moved first. She picked up the paper and folded it in half.
“That's a budget proposal,” she explained.
“We were discussing how Emily could contribute to the household now that she's working full-time.””
“A budget proposal?”” I repeated.
“You told me to pay you or get out!””
“Don't twist my words.””
“You literally slapped me!””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears so quickly that I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing.
“David, I have tried so hard with her. I really have. But she resents me because I'm your wife. She thinks that if she makes my life miserable, you'll eventually send me away.””
My father looked exhausted.
“Vanessa, nobody is sending anybody away.””
“Then please make her understand that she can't treat me like this.””
I stared at him, waiting for him to ask why my face was red. Waiting for him to demand to know why Vanessa was holding a rent demand with my name on it.
Instead, he turned toward me.
“Emily, apologize to Vanessa for the way you've been speaking to her.””
My mouth fell open.
“Are you serious?””
“Now.””
I shook my head.
“No. Dad, please. You're not listening.””
His jaw tightened.
“I said apologize.””
Tears blurred my vision.
“I've spent two years trying to make her happy. I don't fight with her. I don't ask her for money.
I buy my own things. I help around the house. What else do you want me to do?””
Vanessa wiped beneath one eye with a tissue she'd somehow produced from her pocket.
“David, I don't want an apology if she doesn't mean it.””
She paused.
“I just want to feel safe in my own home.””
I stared at her in disbelief.
Then I looked at my father.
He was watching Vanessa with concern.
Not me.
Her.
Something inside my chest tightened until it hurt to breathe.
“Dad,” I whispered, “please look at me.””
He finally did.
I moved closer and turned my face toward the light.
“Look at my cheek. Does this look like I just got upset?””
His expression shifted slightly.
“Emily—”
“She hit me so hard that my ears started ringing. Then she told me I wasn't family and demanded money to stay here.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“I never said she wasn't family.””
“You said this wasn't my house!””
“Because you keep acting like you own everything!””
My father raised his voice.
“Both of you, stop!””
Silence fell over the kitchen.
He took a long breath and loosened his tie.
“I've had a twelve-hour day. I came home expecting dinner and a quiet evening, not another argument.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“Another argument? This isn't an argument about dishes, Dad. She hit me!””
“And I am trying to understand what happened.””
“No, you're trying to make me quiet.””
His eyes hardened.
“Don't speak to me that way.””
Vanessa lowered her head, but I caught the tiny movement at the corner of her mouth.
She was enjoying this.
She'd hurt me, lied about it, and now she was watching my father reprimand me.
I wiped my tears with the back of my hand.
“Fine,” I said.
“Ask her one question.””
David frowned.
“What question?””
“Ask her whether she demanded two thousand dollars from me.””
Vanessa answered before he could speak.
“I asked her to contribute financially. That's all.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“Emily,” my father warned.
I kept my eyes on him.
“Ask her if she said she'd throw me out tomorrow morning unless I paid.””
Vanessa let out an offended gasp.
“David, I will not stand here and be interrogated by your daughter.””
“Then answer the question!”” I shouted.
My father slammed his palm onto the table.
“Enough!””
The water glass jumped.
I froze.
For a moment, I saw the little girl I'd been at sixteen, standing beside her mother's hospital bed and begging her father not to leave for work.
Back then, he'd held my shoulders and promised me something.
No matter what happened, he said, I would always have a home with him.
I wondered if he remembered.
“Dad,” I said softly, “do you remember what you promised Mom?””
His face changed.
Vanessa's expression tightened.
“Emily, don't bring your mother into this,” she said sharply.
I turned toward her.
“Why? Does her name bother you?””
“That's enough!”” Vanessa snapped.
“Your mother is gone. You cannot keep using her memory to control this family.””
My father went very still.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly.
She seemed to realize she'd gone too far.
“I didn't mean—”
“You will not speak about her like that.””
For the first time since he'd walked in, I saw my father's attention shift away from me and settle fully on his wife.
Vanessa's face paled.
Then she recovered.
“I'm sorry,” she whispered.
“I'm just overwhelmed. Emily has been cruel to me for months, and I finally lost my patience.””
My father closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, he looked at me.
“Emily, go upstairs. We'll discuss this tomorrow.””
I felt the last of my hope slipping away.
“You're letting her get away with it.””
“I'm asking you to give us time.””
“She has until tomorrow morning to get two thousand dollars from me, or she says she'll throw me out!””
He turned toward Vanessa.
“Did you tell her that?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“No. I told her we needed to discuss household expenses.””
“She's lying!”” I cried.
My father held up a hand.
“That's enough.””
I looked at the folded paper in Vanessa's hand.
Then I looked toward the wooden shelf beside the kitchen doorway.
A small teddy bear sat between a framed photograph of my mother and an old ceramic vase. Its brown fur had faded over the years, and one black button eye was slightly loose.
I'd bought it at a school fundraiser when I was thirteen.
Nobody ever paid much attention to it.
Nobody except me.
I had hidden a tiny camera inside that teddy bear six months earlier, after I'd started noticing that things in my room were being moved while I was at work.
At first, I'd suspected the housekeeper.
Then I'd found my mother's jewelry box open, with nothing missing but everything rearranged.
I'd checked the camera footage that night.
Vanessa had been standing in my bedroom, opening drawers and photographing documents.
When I confronted her, she'd claimed she was looking for a missing necklace.
I hadn't told my father because I had no proof that she intended to do anything wrong.
But I'd left the camera running.
And now I had proof of something much worse.
“Dad,” I said.
He sighed.
“What now?””
I pointed toward the shelf.
“Look at that teddy bear.””
He frowned.
“What about it?””
I swallowed, my fingers trembling.
“It has a camera inside.””
Vanessa's head snapped toward the shelf.
For the first time, the color drained completely from her face.
My father followed her gaze.
Then he slowly turned back to me.
“You've been recording us?””
“Only the kitchen and the hallway. I wanted to know who had been going into my room.””
Vanessa took a step toward me.
“You had no right to spy on me!””
I stepped away.
“You had no right to hit me.””
“Turn it off!”” she demanded.
My father raised a hand.
“Vanessa, stop.””
She looked at him.
“David, she's been secretly recording our private conversations. That's illegal!””
“Then we can deal with that later,” he replied.
“Right now, I want to know what happened.””
I reached for my phone on the couch.
“The camera saves the recordings automatically. I can show you.””
Vanessa hurried between me and the living room.
“No. Absolutely not.””
My father stared at her.
“Why not?””
“Because she's editing things! You don't know what she's capable of!””
I stopped walking.
“Editing what? You just said I was lying before you even saw anything.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“I'm your father's wife. You should show me some respect.””
I looked straight into her eyes.
“Then you should have treated me like family.””
My father took a step toward the shelf.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“David, please. Don't let her destroy our marriage over a misunderstanding.””
He looked down at her hand.
Then he gently removed it.
“I'm not letting anyone destroy anything,” he said.
“I am asking to see the truth.””
He turned to me.
“Can you play the recording?””
I nodded.
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
“David, don't do this. You don't understand what you're about to hear.””
My father held out his hand for my phone.
“Then explain it to me.””
She said nothing.
I opened the camera application and selected the latest recording. The screen displayed a timestamp from less than twenty minutes earlier.
The video began with the empty kitchen.
Then Vanessa walked into the frame.
My father leaned closer to watch.
The recording captured her placing the rent demand on the table, adjusting her bracelet, and waiting for me to come downstairs.
A few seconds later, my own voice came through the speaker.
“Why should I pay you? I'm Dad's daughter. This is my home too!””
Vanessa's voice followed, unmistakable and cold.
“This is not your house. It's mine.””
My father's expression changed.
The video continued.
He watched Vanessa step toward me.
He watched her raise her hand.
And then the recording captured the slap.
The sound echoed through the kitchen a second time.
My father stopped breathing for a moment.
Vanessa backed away from the phone.
“No,” she whispered.
“That doesn't show the whole story.””
But my father was no longer looking at her.
He was watching the screen.
Because the recording had not stopped when Vanessa slapped me.
May you like
It had continued through every word she said afterward.
And the next sentence was about to reveal something neither of us had expected.
