Amused

Chapter 3: The Recording She Couldn't Explain

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The phone sat in my father's hand, the frozen image of Vanessa's raised arm visible on the screen.

David stared at it as though he were trying to convince himself that he had misunderstood what he was seeing.

Then he pressed play again.

The video resumed.

My recorded voice was shaking.

“You hit me.””

Vanessa's voice came through the speaker, clear and unmistakable.

“You provoked me.””

My father closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked at his wife.

“Did you slap her?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“David, I was angry. She was being disrespectful, and I lost my temper.””

“You slapped my daughter.””

“She shouted at me!””

“That's not what I asked.””

Vanessa glanced at me, and the expression in her eyes made my stomach turn.

She wasn't frightened because she'd hurt me.

She was frightened because someone had witnessed it.

“David, you weren't here,” she said.

“You don't know what living with Emily has been like.””

My father turned back to the recording.

The video continued into the moment when Vanessa had thrown my phone onto the couch.

Then came the demand.

“Two thousand dollars,” her recorded voice announced.

“You have until tomorrow morning. If I don't have it, your bedroom will be empty by noon.””

My father's jaw tightened.

The recording continued.

I heard my own voice ask, “And if I tell Dad?””

Then Vanessa's answer filled the kitchen.

“Then I'll tell him you've been threatening me. I'll tell him you're unstable, that you resent our marriage, that you want me gone.””

My father paused the video.

The silence afterward was almost unbearable.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Were you planning to lie to me about my own daughter?””

Vanessa immediately reached for his hand.

“No, David. That's not what I meant.””

“Those are your exact words.””

“I was frustrated!””

“You said you would accuse her of threatening you.””

“Because she was threatening me!””

I stepped forward.

“When did I threaten you? Tell me exactly what I said.””

Vanessa spun toward me.

“You've been trying to turn your father against me since the day we married!””

“That isn't true.””

“You never accepted me!””

“I tried for two years!””

“Because you wanted to look good in front of David!””

The accusation hit me so unexpectedly that I went quiet.

Then I remembered all the times I'd tried.

The birthday card I'd written for her in my own handwriting. The scarf I'd bought her with my first holiday bonus. The evening I'd stayed up helping her prepare for a presentation because she'd claimed she was too overwhelmed to finish it alone.

I had wanted her to feel welcome.

I had wanted my father to be happy.

And apparently, she'd mistaken every kindness for weakness.

My father lowered the phone.

“Vanessa, apologize to Emily.””

She stared at him.

“What?””

“Apologize.””

Her face hardened.

“David, I am your wife.””

“And she's my daughter.””

“I know that!””

“Then act like it.””

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

For a moment, I thought she might finally admit what she'd done.

Instead, she turned to me and forced out a brittle smile.

“I'm sorry you misunderstood the situation.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Her smile vanished.

“What did you say?””

“I'm not accepting that. You didn't misunderstand anything. You hit me, demanded money, and threatened to throw me out.””

My father nodded once.

“She's right.””

Vanessa looked at him as if he'd slapped her.

“Are you taking her side?””

“I'm taking the side of what I just watched.””

She let out a sharp laugh.

“Unbelievable. Two years of marriage, and one video of a private argument is all it takes for you to turn against me?””

“This wasn't a private argument. You assaulted my daughter.””

“Oh, please. She barely has a mark!””

My father went silent.

I felt the air change.

He looked at my cheek again, and his expression grew colder.

“You're concerned about whether you left a mark?””

Vanessa blinked.

“I didn't mean it that way.””

“Then how did you mean it?””

She took a breath, but no answer came.

My father set the phone on the table.

“Emily, go upstairs and get some ice for your face.””

I hesitated.

“Dad—”

“Please. I need a moment with Vanessa.””

The last thing I wanted was to leave him alone with her. But I could see something in his face that hadn't been there before.

He wasn't simply angry.

He was thinking.

I picked up the ice pack from the freezer and went upstairs, leaving the kitchen door open.

I sat on the edge of my bed and pressed the cold pack against my cheek.

Through the open doorway, I could hear their voices rising and falling.

At first, Vanessa was crying.

Then she was angry.

Then she was pleading.

“David, I made a mistake,” she said.

“I admit that. But you can't let Emily dictate what happens in our marriage.””

My father answered quietly.

“This isn't about Emily dictating anything. It's about you telling her she has to pay you to live in her own home.””

“Our home.””

“Mine, Vanessa. I bought this house eleven years before we met.””

“You married me. Everything changed when we got married.””

“The ownership of this house didn't.””

I sat up straighter.

Vanessa lowered her voice, but I could still hear her.

“You promised we'd build a life together. You promised I'd never have to worry about money again.””

“I promised to take care of you. I never promised you could take whatever you wanted.””

“That's not fair.””

“Neither is what you just did.””

A long silence followed.

Then Vanessa said something that made my fingers tighten around the ice pack.

“You don't understand how much I've sacrificed for this family.””

My father gave a humorless laugh.

“What exactly have you sacrificed?””

“I put up with Emily's attitude every day. I put up with her acting like her mother is still here.””

My throat tightened.

My father didn't answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was dangerously calm.

“Don't bring her mother into this again.””

“Why? Because she was perfect?””

“No. Because she was dead before you ever entered our lives, and Emily has spent years trying to survive that loss. You knew that when you married me.””

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“And I have spent two years being treated like an outsider in my own marriage!””

“Then why did you marry me?””

The question silenced her.

I stared at the wall, hardly breathing.

Then my father spoke again.

“There's something else I need to ask you.””

“What?””

“Why did you say the house belongs to you?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

“I was angry.””

“That's the second time you've used that excuse.””

“Because it's true!””

“Then explain the rent demand.””

I heard paper rustle.

My father had apparently unfolded the document from the table.

“Two thousand dollars in rent. Three hundred and fifty in utilities. Two hundred in management fees,” he read.

“What management fees?””

Vanessa's voice faltered.

“I handle the household.””

“You pay the bills from our joint account.””

“I organize things.””

“Emily has a job. She buys her own groceries. We have a housekeeper twice a week. What exactly are you charging her for?””

“I was trying to teach her responsibility.””

“By demanding money she doesn't owe you?””

Vanessa said nothing.

My father continued reading.

“Why does this document say payment must be made directly to you?””

A chair scraped across the floor.

“I was going to put it into the household account.””

“Then why didn't you say that?””

“Because I didn't think you'd understand!””

My father went quiet.

I could picture him standing at the table, holding the paper, searching for some explanation that would make his wife look less like a stranger.

Then he asked the question that changed everything.

“Have you been asking Emily for money before today?””

Vanessa answered too quickly.

“No.””

The word was sharp.

Certain.

And completely different from the hesitation I'd heard earlier.

My father glanced at the phone.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes!””

“Because if you've been taking money from her, I need to know.””

“I haven't taken a cent from her!””

I heard the sound of the phone being picked up again.

My father's footsteps approached the shelf.

“Emily?””

I hurried to the doorway.

He stood at the foot of the stairs, holding the teddy bear in one hand and my phone in the other.

“Can the camera record audio when nobody's in the kitchen?””

“Yes,” I said.

“It's motion-activated. It also saves recordings when it detects sound.””

He studied me.

“Can you check the earlier footage?””

I nodded slowly.

“Why?””

He looked toward the kitchen.

“Because I want to know whether today was really the first time.””

Vanessa appeared behind him.

“David, don't be ridiculous. You're going to destroy our marriage because of a stupid argument.””

He didn't turn around.

“Then you have nothing to worry about.””

I took the phone from him and opened the recording archive.

There were dozens of files.

Some showed the kitchen empty. Others captured Vanessa talking on the phone, sorting mail, or moving around the house.

I scrolled back six months.

Then five.

Then four.

My father stood beside me, watching the screen.

Vanessa grew increasingly restless.

“Emily, this is private,” she said.

“You have no right to dig through months of recordings.””

“You said you never asked me for money,” I replied.

“If that's true, the recordings won't show anything.””

She folded her arms.

“Fine. Go ahead.””

I selected a file from three months earlier.

The video showed Vanessa standing at the kitchen counter with her phone pressed to her ear.

Her voice came through the speaker.

“No, I can't ask David directly. He'll want to know what it's for.””

A pause.

Then she laughed softly.

“Emily has plenty of money. She won't even notice two hundred dollars.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at my father.

He had gone completely still.

The recording continued.

Vanessa opened a drawer, removed a bank statement, and photographed it with her phone.

Then she said something that made my father reach for the edge of the staircase.

“Once I get her used to paying me, I'll increase it. David won't interfere if she thinks it's a household arrangement.””

Vanessa lunged toward the phone.

“Turn that off!””

My father stepped between us.

“Don't touch her.””

Vanessa froze.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that she had lost control of the room.

But the recording wasn't over.

I pressed play.

A man's voice came through the speaker.

It was faint, distorted by the phone connection, but clear enough to understand.

“Are you sure the house is worth that much?”” the man asked.

Vanessa smiled at the screen.

“David has no idea what I've been planning.””

My father slowly turned toward her.

“Who were you talking to?””

Vanessa's face had gone white.

“David, I can explain.””

“Who was that man?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I looked at the screen again, where Vanessa's recorded face was still smiling.

Then I heard her answer.

“It's not about the house,” she said.

“It's about what happens when David finally signs the papers.””

My father stared at her.

“What papers?””

Vanessa took one step backward.

And for the first time that evening, she looked genuinely terrified.

May you like

Because the money she'd demanded from me was only the beginning.

The real secret was whatever she had been trying to get my father to sign.
