Amused

Chapter 8: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

The name Daniel gave me stayed in my head all night.

I refused to believe it.

I couldn’t.

Some betrayals are painful because they are unexpected.

Others hurt because they confirm a fear you never wanted to admit.

This was the first kind.

The person Daniel named was Linda.

My best friend.

Twenty years of friendship.

The woman who held my hand during my divorce.

The woman who brought soup when Michael had pneumonia.

The woman who told me, “You and that boy are going to be okay.””

I called her the next morning.

She answered immediately.

“Sarah?””

Her voice sounded normal.

That almost made it worse.

“Linda.””

A pause.

“What happened?””

I looked at the documents on my table.

“I need to ask you something.””

“Okay.””

“Did you know Daniel was planning something against me?””

Silence.

Only three seconds.

But three seconds can reveal a lifetime.

“Sarah…”

My stomach sank.

“You knew.””

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

“Linda.””

She exhaled.

“Not everything.””

I closed my eyes.

“What does that mean?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know how far it would go.””

I felt numb.

“How far it would go?””

“Daniel told me he was just trying to protect himself.””

I laughed quietly.

“Protect himself from me?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“From the divorce.””

I stood.

“Linda, he made me look like the villain.””

“I know.””

The words hurt.

“You know?””

She cried harder.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at the wall.

The woman who comforted me had been watching me lose pieces of my life.

“You were my friend.””

“I was.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were someone pretending to be my friend.””

After I hung up, I sat there for a long time.

Not crying.

Not angry.

Just empty.

Michael found me that way.

He immediately knew.

“What happened?””

I told him.

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“Mom, I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t have to apologize for other people.””

“I know.””

He sat beside me.

“But I hate that everyone keeps hurting you.””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s because you love me.””

He looked down.

“I wish I could have protected you sooner.””

I touched his shoulder.

“You did something better.””

“What?””

“You became someone who knew the difference between loyalty and silence.””

That evening, Linda came to my apartment.

I almost didn’t open the door.

But I did.

She looked broken.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“Sarah.””

I stayed silent.

“I deserve your anger.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I do.””

She handed me an envelope.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

I didn’t move.

“Why now?””

“Because I finally realized something.””

“What?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Daniel didn’t just lie to you.””

She looked at the floor.

“He lied to everyone.””

Inside the envelope were printed messages.

Between Daniel and Chloe.

And one message caught my attention.

From Chloe.

“We need Linda to keep Sarah calm until everything is signed.””

I looked up.

“She used you.””

Linda nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, I saw something in her face.

Shame.

Real shame.

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because Daniel promised to help my son with a business loan.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an excuse.

And somehow, I was always the person who paid the price.

But then I saw another message.

One I hadn’t noticed before.

My hands went cold.

It wasn’t from Chloe.

It wasn’t from Daniel.

It was from Richard.

The message was sent after the graduation ceremony.

And it said:

“The mother and son are closer than expected. We need to separate them before the final step.””

I looked at Michael.

He read it too.

His face changed.

“Final step?””

I nodded.

Because suddenly, I understood.

The graduation ceremony wasn’t the end of their plan.

It was a warning.

They weren’t trying to take my house anymore.

May you like

They were trying to take something much bigger.

Something that belonged to Michael.
