Chapter 6: The Name Behind the Plan
Chloe stared at her phone like it had become something dangerous.
Her fingers hovered above the screen.
She didn’t answer.
“Who is it?”” Daniel asked again.
This time, his voice wasn’t angry.
It was afraid.
Chloe slowly lowered the phone.
“No one.””
Michael let out a bitter laugh.
“Funny.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“People always say ‘no one’ when they’re talking about someone who can ruin everything.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I watched Chloe’s face carefully.
For years, I had wondered how someone could walk into another person’s life and destroy pieces of it without feeling anything.
But standing there, I saw something I had never seen before.
Panic.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Panic.
Because she wasn’t worried about hurting me.
She was worried about being caught.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Give me the phone.””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Daniel stopped.
“Chloe.””
She looked at him.
And for the first time, I saw something between them crack.
Their perfect relationship.
The one built on the ashes of mine.
The one everyone believed was stronger because it had survived the beginning of our marriage.
But maybe it had only survived because they were both hiding something.
Michael moved toward her.
“Who helped you fake the document?””
Chloe shook her head.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Then prove it.””
She stared at him.
“Excuse me?””
“Show us the message.””
Her face tightened.
“You don’t get to demand things from me.””
Michael smiled sadly.
“No.””
He looked at his father.
“But apparently everyone else gets to demand things from my mom.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Enough.””
I looked at him.
“Enough?””
He looked exhausted.
“Yes. This has gone too far.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Daniel, you forged documents. You lied about our marriage. You tried to take our home.””
“I didn’t do it alone.””
The words slipped out.
Everyone froze.
Daniel realized what he had said.
Too late.
Chloe slowly turned toward him.
“Daniel.””
He looked away.
And that was when I understood.
They weren’t united.
They were protecting themselves.
Not each other.
A sharp knock came from the door.
Nobody moved.
Then it came again.
Three slow knocks.
Michael looked at me.
“I didn’t invite anyone.””
Daniel looked at Chloe.
She went pale.
“Open it,” I said.
Nobody answered.
So I walked forward.
I opened the door.
A man stood there.
He looked to be in his late fifties.
Gray hair.
Expensive jacket.
A familiar confidence.
The kind of confidence people have when they think money can solve anything.
He looked past me.
Straight at Chloe.
“You ignored my calls.””
Chloe swallowed.
“I was busy.””
The man stepped inside.
“No.””
His eyes moved around the room.
“You were panicking.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“My name is Richard Hale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Daniel’s expression changed.
“You.””
Richard looked at him.
“Yes.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
Michael whispered:
“Dad knows him.””
Richard laughed.
“Of course he does.””
He looked at Daniel.
“We had an agreement.””
My stomach tightened.
An agreement.
Another one.
Richard reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out a folder.
“I assume you’ve discovered the paperwork.””
Daniel looked furious.
“Not here.””
Richard ignored him.
“Actually, here is perfect.””
He placed the folder on the table.
“Because everyone should know what happened.””
Chloe stepped forward.
“Richard, stop.””
He looked at her.
“Stop?””
His smile disappeared.
“You promised me this would be finished seven years ago.””
Seven years.
The same number that had followed me everywhere.
The divorce.
The betrayal.
The beginning of Chloe’s life with Daniel.
Michael picked up the folder.
“What is this?””
Richard looked at him.
“Your father wanted a clean exit.””
Daniel’s face turned red.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Richard continued.
“He wanted the house. He wanted his reputation untouched. He wanted Sarah to look like the difficult one.””
I felt like the room was spinning.
Michael opened the folder.
Inside were copies.
Emails.
Contracts.
Messages.
Proof.
Richard pointed at Daniel.
“He hired me to create a plan.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Richard’s voice was calm.
“That was our arrangement.””
Chloe looked terrified.
“Richard, you said nobody would find out.””
He turned toward her.
“And you said you would pay me.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Michael looked at Chloe.
“You paid him?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
My son closed the folder.
Then he looked at me.
“Mom…”
I could barely speak.
“How long?””
Richard answered.
“Seven years.””
Seven years of lies.
Seven years of me believing I had failed.
Seven years of wondering why my marriage ended.
I looked at Daniel.
“Was any of it real?””
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to lie.
Then he stopped.
“I…”
His voice broke.
And that hurt more than anger.
Because a part of me had still hoped.
Richard picked up his briefcase.
“I’ve told you what you need to know.””
Michael stepped in front of him.
“No.””
Richard looked amused.
“What?””
“You don’t get to walk away.””
Richard smiled.
“You think you can stop me?””
Michael held up his phone.
“I think everyone in this room should hear the recording I just made.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“What recording?””
Michael pressed a button.
A voice filled the room.
Richard’s own voice.
Clear.
Cold.
“We make Sarah look unstable. We make Daniel look like the victim. By the time anyone questions the paperwork, the house will already be gone.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Chloe whispered:
“Daniel…”
But Daniel wasn’t looking at her.
He was looking at the phone.
And for the first time in seven years…
May you like
He looked exactly like I had felt.
Trapped.
