Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Signature
The document was old.
Almost seven years old.
The same year Daniel left.
The same year my life changed.
The agreement claimed I had given up my rights to something.
Something I didn’t even know existed.
My family home.
The house where Michael took his first steps.
The house where I painted his bedroom walls blue because he said blue made him feel like he was sleeping in the sky.
The house Daniel promised we would grow old in.
I looked at the signature.
My signature.
But it wasn’t mine.
“Michael…”
My voice broke.
“This is fake.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because I asked a lawyer friend to look at it.””
I stared at him.
My son had been investigating this alone.
“You should have told me.””
He looked down.
“I wanted proof first.””
A knock interrupted us.
We both froze.
I opened the door.
Daniel stood there.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
Chloe was beside him.
She looked nervous.
Daniel spoke first.
“We need to talk.””
I looked at the document in my hand.
“No.””
His eyes moved to it.
And immediately, he knew.
“Where did you get that?””
Michael stepped forward.
“Does it matter?””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“This is a private matter.””
“No,” I said.
My voice surprised even me.
“It stopped being private when you tried to steal my life.””
Chloe crossed her arms.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
I looked at her.
“For once, explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because she had always been comfortable when I was silent.
Not anymore.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Sarah, this was complicated.””
“You forged my signature.””
“No.””
“Then why is my name on a document I never saw?””
Silence.
Michael pulled out his phone.
“I recorded the document review.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You recorded me?””
“No.””
Michael looked at his father.
“I recorded the truth.””
Chloe stepped back.
“This is ridiculous.””
Michael looked at her.
“Is it?””
He held up another paper.
“Because the notary listed here doesn’t exist.””
Daniel’s face changed.
For the first time, he looked scared.
I felt something inside me shift.
For years, I thought I lost everything when Daniel left.
But standing there, watching him realize he couldn’t control the story anymore, I understood something.
He hadn’t taken my life.
He had only taken my trust.
And that was something I could rebuild.
Daniel looked at Michael.
“Son, you don’t understand.””
Michael shook his head.
“No, Dad.””
His voice was quiet.
“I understand now.””
The room fell silent.
Then Chloe’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
“Who is it?”” Daniel asked.
She didn’t answer.
She just stared.
Then she whispered:
“It’s the person who helped us.””
Michael looked at me.
The same fear returned.
Because whoever was behind all of this…
May you like
Had just decided to come forward.
And the name appearing on Chloe’s phone was one I never expected to see.
