Chapter 4: The Woman Who Wanted My Life
The handwriting on the note wasn’t Chloe’s.
It wasn’t Daniel’s.
That was what scared me most.
Someone else had been involved.
I spent the next morning trying to find answers.
I called Michael.
He arrived twenty minutes later.
“You got a message?””
I handed him the phone.
His face changed.
“Mom.””
“What?””
“I’ve seen this handwriting before.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“At Dad’s office.””
Daniel worked as a financial manager.
His whole life was paperwork, contracts, and signatures.
“What would this have to do with his office?””
Michael looked at the photo again.
“I don’t know.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman spoke.
“Sarah?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Laura Bennett.””
I didn’t recognize it.
“I knew Daniel before Chloe.””
The room went quiet.
“What?””
Laura took a breath.
“Seven years ago, before your divorce was final, Daniel told people your marriage was already over.””
My stomach dropped.
“That’s not possible.””
“I’m sorry.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
“Because Chloe didn’t just appear after your divorce.””
I felt cold.
“She was already there.””
Michael looked at me.
I put the call on speaker.
Laura continued.
“She was Daniel’s assistant.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything suddenly looked different.
The late meetings.
The phone calls.
The excuses.
“No,” I whispered.
Michael grabbed my hand.
“Mom.””
Laura continued.
“Daniel told me he was leaving you because he found someone who understood him.””
My voice shook.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
A pause.
“Because Chloe threatened my job.””
The silence afterward felt endless.
Michael looked furious.
“She knew.””
I nodded slowly.
“She knew everything.””
That afternoon, Daniel showed up at my apartment.
I opened the door but didn’t invite him in.
“What do you want?””
He looked tired.
“Who told you?””
I almost smiled.
No denial.
No confusion.
Just that.
“Laura.””
His face changed.
“She had no right.””
“You mean she had no right to tell the truth?””
Daniel looked away.
“Sarah, it wasn’t like that.””
I laughed.
“Then what was it like?””
He didn’t answer.
Because some questions don’t need answers.
They need honesty.
And he didn’t have any.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“You just wanted a different life.””
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Even after seven years.
“I thought Chloe loved me.””
I looked at him.
“And now?””
He stayed silent.
That silence was louder than anything.
Before he left, he turned around.
“Sarah, please don’t let Michael hate me.””
I stared at him.
“Daniel, I didn’t teach him to hate you.””
I stepped back.
“You taught him to see you.””
That night, Michael found another document.
A financial agreement.
With my name on it.
But I had never signed it.
He looked at me.
“Mom.””
I stared at the fake signature.
“What is this?””
Michael flipped the page.
Then he whispered:
“Dad and Chloe weren’t trying to remove you from his life.””
I looked at him.
“What were they trying to do?””
He pointed to the final paragraph.
May you like
And I felt my entire world stop.
“They were trying to take something that belonged to you.””
