Chapter 7: The Secret Between Sisters
I didn’t sleep.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was finally awake.
For years, I had protected Vanessa.
I had defended her.
I had explained away every cruel comment.
Every selfish moment.
Every time she made me feel small.
Because I believed sisters were supposed to forgive.
But forgiveness without truth was just another way of hiding pain.
The next morning, Daniel arrived at my house.
He looked exhausted.
“You talked to her.””
I nodded.
“What did she mean?””
He knew exactly what I was asking.
“The reason she deleted the footage.””
Daniel sat down.
“I don’t know.””
“You said you had the evidence.””
“I thought I did.””
I looked at him.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
He looked away.
That was enough.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“There was something else on the footage.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He rubbed his face.
“Before the crash.””
I waited.
“Vanessa received a message.””
“From who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did you see the number?””
“No.””
I stood.
“So there’s another person involved?””
“I don’t know.””
I hated those words.
I didn’t know.
For three years, everyone had been saying that.
My parents didn’t know.
Doctors didn’t know.
Vanessa didn’t know.
Everyone knew something.
Except me.
I drove to Vanessa’s apartment that afternoon.
I didn’t tell anyone.
I needed answers directly from her.
She opened the door and immediately looked afraid.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
“Why?””
“Because you’re angry.””
I laughed.
“You think I’m angry?””
I stepped inside.
“I’m hurt.””
That made her look away.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“Three years ago, you watched me lose everything.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to wake up every morning and wonder if your body will work.””
She looked down.
“I was scared.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.””
Because suddenly I understood something.
Vanessa had spent three years using fear as an excuse.
Fear explained what happened.
It didn’t erase it.
“Who texted you that night?””
Her face changed.
A tiny movement.
But I saw it.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Stop lying.””
She looked angry.
“You think you know everything now?””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I know enough.””
She walked toward the kitchen.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She gripped the counter.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt you.””
“Then what were you trying to do?””
Silence.
Finally she whispered:
“I wanted you to know how it felt.””
I stared.
“How what felt?””
“To lose.””
The words made my stomach turn.
“You wanted me to lose?””
She cried.
“I was always your shadow.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“Vanessa…”
“Everyone loved you after the accident.””
My expression changed.
“Loved me?””
She laughed bitterly.
“You became the brave one.””
“You almost killed me.””
“I know!””
She screamed.
Then immediately covered her mouth.
The silence afterward was terrifying.
Because she had finally admitted it.
Not directly.
But enough.
I stepped back.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You did.””
I reached for my phone.
“I’m recording this.””
Her face went white.
“Emily, don’t.””
“Why?””
“Because if you do this, everything falls apart.””
I stared at her.
“Good.””
She looked at me.
And then she said something I never expected.
“Your accident wasn’t the worst thing I did.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
She wiped her tears.
“I was trying to fix everything.””
“Fix what?””
She looked at me.
“The thing that happened after.””
“What thing?””
She walked to a drawer.
Pulled out a small envelope.
And handed it to me.
“I kept this because I thought someday you’d understand.””
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A man I didn’t recognize.
Standing near my crashed car.
On the back of the photo were five words.
*He was there before Vanessa.*
I looked up.
“Who is this?””
May you like
Vanessa whispered:
“The person who caused everything.””
