Amused

Chapter 4: The Evidence She Left Behind

I didn’t sleep that night.

Daniel’s words kept replaying.

I think Vanessa planned this.

Not a mistake.

Not a joke.

Planned.

At 8:00 the next morning, Daniel came to my apartment.

He looked like he hadn’t slept either.

He carried a small envelope.

“What is that?””

He placed it on my table.

“I found it yesterday.””

Inside was a printed message.

A conversation.

Between Vanessa and one of her friends.

I read the first line.

My hands went cold.

“Do you think the fall will be enough?””

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I found it on Vanessa’s laptop.””

I kept reading.

“She needs to stop getting sympathy.””

Another message appeared.

“After everything she’s gotten from that accident, everyone treats her like she’s fragile.””

My vision blurred.

Daniel sat across from me.

“I didn’t want to believe it.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Since when?””

He looked down.

“The day before the pool incident.””

My heart sank.

“What happened?””

Daniel sighed.

“Vanessa was talking to her friend near the garden.””

He paused.

“She didn’t know I was there.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“She said your injury was becoming your identity.””

I closed my eyes.

That hurt.

Because it sounded exactly like her.

“I thought she was just frustrated,” Daniel continued.

“But then she mentioned the pool.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

“She said, ‘Maybe if everyone sees Emily isn’t as helpless as they think, they’ll stop treating her differently.’”

My stomach twisted.

“She wanted to embarrass me.””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at the messages again.

There were more.

Vanessa had complained about me.

About my recovery.

About my parents.

About Daniel.

But one message made my blood run cold.

“I just need one moment where everyone sees she’s not the victim.””

I put the paper down.

For months, I had blamed myself for being difficult.

For needing help.

For taking up space.

But Vanessa had been keeping score.

She had been waiting.

Daniel reached across the table.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not seeing it sooner.””

I shook my head.

“You’re not responsible for her choices.””

But part of me wondered.

How long had people been seeing the truth about Vanessa while I refused to?

That afternoon, my mother called.

Her voice sounded worried.

“Emily, your sister came by.””

I immediately sat up.

“What did she want?””

“She wanted me to convince you to drop everything.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course.””

“She said the wedding is ruined because of you.””

My hands tightened.

Then my mother said something unexpected.

“She also said something else.””

“What?””

“She said if you tell anyone about those messages, she’ll make sure everyone knows what really happened after your accident.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

My mother was quiet.

“I don’t know.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because Vanessa wasn’t just trying to save her wedding.

She was trying to protect a secret.

And that secret had something to do with the accident that changed my life.

That night, I opened my old accident files for the first time in months.

I searched through medical records.

Insurance papers.

Police reports.

Then I found something strange.

A document I had never seen before.

A witness statement.

Signed three months after the crash.

And at the bottom of the page was a name.

May you like

A name that made my entire body go numb.

Vanessa Carter.
