Chapter 5: The Truth I Was Never Told
I stared at the signature for almost an hour.
Vanessa Carter.
My sister.
The same woman who pushed me into a pool.
The same woman who claimed it was a joke.
The same woman who had been standing beside my hospital bed telling me she loved me.
Why was her name on my accident file?
I called Daniel immediately.
He answered on the second ring.
“Emily?””
“I found something.””
My voice sounded different.
Even to me.
“What happened?””
I sent him a picture of the document.
A minute later, my phone rang.
“Where did you get this?””
“My accident file.””
Silence.
“Daniel?””
“I need to tell you something.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“I saw Vanessa looking through your records once.””
I stood still.
“When?””
“About two months after your accident.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know what she was doing.””
I looked at the document again.
Everything felt like it was shifting.
The accident.
The surgery.
The jealousy.
The pool.
All connected by invisible threads.
I called my father next.
When he answered, I asked one question.
“Dad, was Vanessa involved in my accident?””
The silence told me everything.
“Dad?””
He exhaled.
“Where did you hear that?””
My hand shook.
“So it’s true.””
“No.””
But his voice was weak.
“Not like you think.””
“Then explain.””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
Finally, he said:
“Come over.””
When I arrived, both my parents were waiting.
My mother looked like she had been crying.
My father held a folder.
A different folder.
One I had never seen.
“Your accident report was changed,” he said.
I stared.
“What?””
“There was an error in the original statement.””
“What kind of error?””
My father looked at my mother.
Then back at me.
“Vanessa wasn’t just a witness.””
My breathing stopped.
“She was driving behind you.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“She called us after the crash.””
My mother whispered:
“She told us she saw everything.””
I looked between them.
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””
My father looked devastated.
“Because the doctors said you were too unstable.””
“And later?””
My mother looked away.
“Vanessa begged us not to.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
Nobody spoke.
Then my father opened the folder.
Inside was another statement.
This one handwritten.
Vanessa’s handwriting.
I read the first sentence.
“I was looking at my phone when Emily’s car lost control.””
I stopped.
My hands went cold.
“She was texting?””
My father nodded.
“She said she dropped the phone because she panicked.””
I looked at the paper.
“But why was it hidden?””
My father’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because Vanessa was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
She was afraid I would hate her.
She was afraid everyone would know.
She was afraid her perfect image would disappear.
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Ask your sister why she deleted the original accident footage.*
I looked up.
“Dad?””
He went pale.
“What?””
I turned the phone around.
My mother covered her mouth.
Because there was only one place that footage could have come from.
The hotel security office.
And only one person had access to it.
Daniel called me before I could speak.
His voice was urgent.
“Emily, don’t go anywhere alone.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa just found out I have the evidence.””
My heart raced.
“What evidence?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“The video from the night of the accident.””
I gripped the phone.
“Daniel…”
His voice dropped.
“Emily, Vanessa didn’t just push you into that pool.””
A cold silence filled the room.
May you like
“She’s been trying to control the truth for three years.””
And then the call suddenly ended.
