Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Perfect Sister

Vanessa walked away to take the call.

That alone was unusual.

She never walked away from attention.

But this time, she looked nervous.

Really nervous.

I watched her disappear around the corner of the resort lobby.

Daniel noticed too.

“What was that about?””

Nobody answered.

Because none of us knew.

But I knew one thing.

Vanessa wasn’t scared about losing a honeymoon.

She was scared about something else.

The next afternoon, I returned home.

My doctor confirmed I hadn’t seriously damaged my shoulder again, but the fall had caused inflammation and delayed my recovery.

Delayed.

One word.

One word that meant weeks more pain.

Weeks more therapy.

Weeks more frustration.

I sat on my couch that night staring at my physical therapy equipment.

The same equipment I had used every day.

The same equipment Vanessa once helped me organize.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I expected an apology.

Instead, I saw:

“We need to talk.””

I almost ignored it.

But part of me still hoped.

Still hoped my sister would finally admit what she did.

I agreed to meet her at a coffee shop.

When she arrived, she looked exhausted.

Not sorry.

Exhausted.

“There’s something you need to understand,” she said.

I stared at her.

“You pushed me into a pool.””

“I know.””

“Then what exactly do I need to understand?””

She looked around.

“Daniel is overreacting.””

I almost laughed.

“Overreacting?””

“Yes.””

“You almost injured my shoulder again.””

“But you’re fine.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

“You’re unbelievable.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Emily, you always make everything so dramatic.””

I looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And suddenly I saw it.

She wasn’t pretending anymore.

This was who she was.

“You didn’t come here to apologize.””

She looked away.

“No.””

“Then why are we here?””

She hesitated.

“Because Daniel is leaving me.””

I felt nothing.

Not happiness.

Not satisfaction.

Just sadness.

“You caused that.””

“No, you caused that.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“If you hadn’t made such a big deal about the pool…”

I stood up.

“Wow.””

“Emily—”

“No.””

People in the coffee shop glanced over.

I didn’t care.

“You pushed me because you were jealous.””

Her face changed.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

“You were angry because people cared about me.””

“That’s not true.””

“It is.””

I grabbed my bag.

“You don’t hate that I got hurt. You hate that people noticed.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You think you’re better than me now?””

I stopped.

“What?””

“You always did this.””

“Did what?””

“Act innocent.””

I stared at her.

She continued.

“Everyone thinks you’re the sweet sister. The survivor. The strong one.””

Her voice dropped.

“But they don’t know you.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled.

A small, bitter smile.

“It means you should ask yourself why Daniel believed you so quickly.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

She stood.

“Ask him.””

Then she walked away.

For the first time since the accident, I wondered if there was something I didn’t know.

Something Vanessa knew.

That evening, I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Emily?””

“Daniel, can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

“Why did you believe me?””

There was silence.

Too much silence.

Then he said:

“Because I saw something before the pool incident.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What?””

Another pause.

May you like

Then Daniel whispered:

“Emily, I think Vanessa planned this.””
