Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth Cole Never Wanted Me To See

The video loaded slowly.

Too slowly.

Every second felt like a lifetime.

I watched the spinning circle on the screen, feeling like my entire existence was trapped inside that tiny loading symbol.

Because I knew.

Whatever was about to appear would change everything.

Again.

I was beginning to understand something about the truth.

People always say they want it.

They say they need it.

They say they would do anything to know what really happened.

But nobody tells you that the truth is not always a door opening.

Sometimes it is a wall collapsing.

And you are standing underneath it.

The video finally started.

The screen showed the same parking lot.

The same night.

The same grainy footage.

My father stood beside Richard Marston’s car.

Sixteen-year-old Adrian stood several feet away.

But there was something else I hadn’t noticed before.

A fourth person.

A person sitting inside the vehicle.

I leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

I looked at him.

His face had gone completely still.

“Adrian?””

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

But his voice told me he did.

The video continued.

My father held a folder.

Richard Marston reached for it.

Then my father pulled it back.

Even through the poor quality, I could see his expression.

Anger.

Fear.

Determination.

My father wasn’t begging.

He wasn’t running.

He was fighting.

The audio cracked.

Then words came through.

“You can’t bury this forever.””

My breath caught.

My father.

After fifteen years, I heard his voice.

A voice I thought I would never hear again.

My eyes burned.

Richard stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

My father shook his head.

“No. I understand exactly what I’m doing.””

The video skipped.

Then:

“I’m protecting my daughter.””

My hand flew to my mouth.

Me.

He was talking about me.

Not money.

Not reputation.

Not business.

Me.

The video continued.

Richard looked toward the car.

Then back at my father.

“You think telling her will save her?””

My father’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Richard said something too quietly to hear.

The audio distorted.

Then my father stepped back.

“No.””

The word was sharp.

“No, you promised.””

Richard moved closer.

“You should have taken the deal.””

My father looked toward Adrian.

Even through the blurry footage, I could see it.

He was worried about the boy.

About Adrian.

Then my father did something that made my heart stop.

He walked toward him.

The camera angle shifted.

But I could see my father place something into Adrian’s hand.

A small object.

Then he said something.

The audio cut.

Adrian suddenly stood.

“I never saw that.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“I never saw that part.””

His voice sounded broken.

“You were there.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

“Because I left before that.””

The video continued.

My father looked directly at the camera.

Not at Richard.

Not at Adrian.

At the camera.

Like he knew someone was watching.

Then he said:

“If anything happens to me, give this to Emma.””

The screen froze.

I stopped breathing.

The video ended.

No explanation.

No final answer.

Just those words.

Give this to Emma.

The room was silent.

Then I turned to Adrian.

“What did he give you?””

Adrian didn’t move.

“Adrian.””

His eyes looked distant.

“I thought I lost it.””

“What?””

“The thing your father gave me.””

I stood.

“What thing?””

He reached into his wallet.

From a hidden compartment, he pulled out a small metal key.

Old.

Scratched.

Worn.

I stared.

“You had that this whole time?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t know what it opened.””

I looked at the key.

A strange feeling moved through me.

Like I had seen it before.

Not the key itself.

The shape.

The symbol engraved on it.

A small mark.

A circle with a line through the middle.

I touched my necklace.

The one I had worn for years.

The one my father gave me before he disappeared.

Adrian noticed.

“Where did you get that?””

I looked down.

“My father.””

His expression changed.

“Emma.””

“What?””

He pointed.

“Look at the symbol.””

I removed the necklace.

My hands shook.

The engraving matched.

Exactly.

The key.

And my necklace.

Two pieces of the same thing.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

A woman’s voice replied.

“Emma?””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from today.

Not from recent years.

From childhood.

“Mom?””

Nobody spoke.

My mother’s voice trembled.

“You found it.””

I looked at Adrian.

“What?””

“The truth.””

My heart started racing.

“How do you know?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I was the one who hid it.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

My mother.

The woman who spent fifteen years telling me my father left.

My mother.

Who knew.

“What did you hide?””

Her voice cracked.

“Everything.””

I walked away from the others.

“Mom, what are you talking about?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

My voice broke.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me while they destroy my life.””

“I know.””

The sadness in her voice made me pause.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

Another silence.

Then:

“Cole knows.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“He knows the truth about your father.””

“How?””

“Because he found the same documents I did.””

I looked at Adrian.

“Why?””

My mother whispered:

“Because Cole wasn’t investigating your father.””

“Then what?””

“He was investigating you.””

I felt cold.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“Because your father left something behind.””

I looked at the key.

“What?””

“A record.””

“Of what?””

“The truth about the Marston family.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why would Cole want that?””

“He doesn’t want the truth.””

“Then what does he want?””

My mother answered:

“What his father spent fifteen years trying to find.””

I looked at Adrian.

He looked like he already knew.

“The evidence.””

My mother inhaled sharply.

“You’re with Adrian.””

“Yes.””

“Emma, listen to me carefully.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You cannot trust anyone with the Marston name.””

The words hurt.

Because Adrian was standing right there.

And despite everything, some part of me still believed him.

“Mom.””

“What?””

“Did Dad trust Adrian?””

Silence.

A long one.

Then:

“Yes.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

My mother continued.

“He trusted him because he knew Adrian was different from his father.””

I looked at Adrian.

For the first time, he looked away.

“Mom, why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

“What promise?””

“That you would never be involved.””

I laughed sadly.

“That worked out well.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I don’t want an apology.””

I looked at the room.

At the documents.

At the years of secrets.

“I want the truth.””

My mother was silent.

Then she said:

“The truth is that Cole never loved you.””

The words hurt.

Even though I already suspected.

“He chose you because of your father.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

“Because he believed you had something.””

“What?””

“A key.””

I looked down.

At the necklace.

“He thought your father left you the evidence.””

My heart stopped.

“But I don’t have anything.””

My mother whispered:

“You do.””

“What?””

“The key around your neck.””

I froze.

“No.””

“Emma.””

“No.””

I touched the necklace.

“This?””

“Yes.””

My mother’s voice broke.

“Your father didn’t give you jewelry.””

My breathing slowed.

“He gave you a warning.””

The call suddenly ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then at Adrian.

“Did you know?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“Again?””

His face tightened.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You knew this necklace mattered.””

“I didn’t know for certain.””

“But you suspected.””

“Yes.””

“And you still didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

I laughed.

A painful sound.

“Do you all hear yourselves?””

Nobody answered.

Because they did.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone had decided what I could handle.

Then my phone buzzed one more time.

A message.

From Cole.

Only one sentence.

*You finally know why I needed to marry you.*

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

*But Adrian never told you the most important part.*

My heart stopped.

A final message arrived.

*He wasn’t the only one there when your father disappeared.*

I looked at Adrian.

Slowly.

Terrified.

“Who else was there?””

Adrian’s face changed.

Because this time…

He wasn’t hiding the truth.

He was afraid of it.

And then his phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

A name.

One I recognized.

May you like

Because it was the last person I expected to hear from.

My father.
