Chapter 2: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
I did not know Adrian Marston well.
That was the strange part.
I had spent three years with Cole.
Three years learning the little things about him.
The way he tapped his fingers when he was nervous.
The way he hated silence during car rides.
The way he always ordered black coffee but secretly added sugar when he thought nobody was watching.
I knew my fiancé.
Or at least I thought I did.
But Adrian?
Adrian was the shadow behind him.
The older brother everyone mentioned but nobody really talked about.
Cole had always described him as “complicated.””
That was the word people used when they didn’t want to explain the truth.
Complicated.
Difficult.
Private.
Cold.
I had met Adrian only four times.
Once at Cole’s father’s birthday dinner.
Once at Thanksgiving.
Once at a charity event where he barely spoke to anyone.
And once when he helped me carry boxes into our apartment after Cole injured his shoulder.
He had always seemed distant.
Observant.
Like he noticed things other people missed.
Now, standing inside that hotel ballroom, watching Cole stare at the message in his hands, I wondered what exactly Adrian had noticed.
“What is this?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Cole folded the paper immediately.
Too quickly.
Like hiding the words would erase them.
“Emma, you need to leave.””
I stared at him.
A strange calm settled over me.
Maybe it was shock.
Maybe it was the moment when your heart gets tired of breaking.
“Leave?””
Cole looked around the room.
His confidence was gone.
“You’re upset. You shouldn’t be here right now.””
I almost smiled.
“You mean I shouldn’t be here while you’re trying to control the damage?””
His face tightened.
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
I looked at Tessa.
Then back at him.
“Do you want to talk about fair?””
Tessa stepped between us.
“Emma, please.””
I turned toward her.
“Don’t.””
The single word made her stop.
“You don’t get to comfort me.””
Her expression hardened.
“I’m not trying to hurt you.””
“No. You already did.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the hotel employee quietly walked out, leaving the three of us trapped in the room with everything that had been destroyed.
I picked up the last paper from the floor.
A seating chart.
My handwriting.
At the top, I had written:
*Emma and Cole — Forever Begins Here.*
I stared at those words until they blurred.
Forever.
Such a small word.
Such a dangerous promise.
“Who is Adrian?”” I asked.
Cole looked away.
“My brother.””
“I know that.””
“Then you know enough.””
I laughed quietly.
“You’re serious?””
“Emma—”
“No, I want to understand.””
I walked closer.
“Your brother leaves a message saying he knows what you did, and suddenly you’re terrified. Why?””
Cole’s jaw clenched.
“Because Adrian likes drama.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“He thinks he can fix everyone’s problems.””
I watched him carefully.
There was something hidden underneath his anger.
Something deeper.
Fear.
“You’re scared of him.””
Cole’s eyes snapped toward me.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No, I’m not.””
“You are.””
The silence afterward told me I was right.
Tessa looked between us.
“Cole, what is happening?””
He ignored her.
That hurt her.
I noticed.
The confidence she had walked in with was fading.
For the first time, she wasn’t the woman who believed she had won.
She looked like someone realizing she had stepped into a fight she didn’t understand.
I grabbed my purse.
“I’m leaving.””
Cole moved toward me.
“Emma, wait.””
I stopped at the door.
“What?””
His expression changed.
For a second, I saw the man I loved.
The man who used to bring me soup when I was sick.
The man who stayed up all night helping me prepare for my nursing exams.
The man who cried when he proposed because he said he had spent his whole life looking for someone who felt like home.
Then I remembered him sitting with my sister.
And the image disappeared.
“I never wanted this to happen,” he said.
I looked at him.
“That’s the problem, Cole.””
“What?””
“You keep talking about what you wanted.””
I opened the door.
“You never once asked what you did.””
I walked out.
The hallway smelled like expensive perfume and fresh flowers.
The same flowers that were supposed to decorate my wedding.
I made it halfway to the elevator before my legs started shaking.
I pressed the button.
Once.
Twice.
Anything to keep myself from crying in the middle of that hallway.
The elevator doors opened.
I stepped inside.
Then my phone rang.
I looked down.
Unknown number.
For some reason, I answered.
“Hello?””
A deep voice spoke.
“Emma Bennett?””
I froze.
“Yes?””
“This is Adrian Marston.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
I expected anger.
I expected excuses.
I expected him to defend his brother.
Instead, he said something that made my entire body go cold.
“I’m sorry you had to find out that way.””
I stared at the elevator doors.
“What do you mean?””
A pause.
Long enough to feel intentional.
Then:
“Because what you saw today is only the beginning.””
My breath caught.
“What are you talking about?””
“Cole didn’t just betray you.””
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
But I didn’t move.
“Emma,” Adrian continued, “there are things about your fiancé you don’t know.””
My heart started pounding.
“Why should I believe you?””
“Because I tried to warn him.””
“Warn him about what?””
Another pause.
Then his voice became quieter.
“About making the mistake of underestimating you.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Meet me tonight.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to meet you after today?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if you walk away now, Cole gets exactly what he wants.””
My fingers went cold.
“What?””
Adrian exhaled slowly.
“Emma, your wedding wasn’t the only thing Cole was planning.””
The elevator doors began closing.
“Where do I meet you?””
“Riverside Café. Eight o’clock.””
I hesitated.
Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.
“Adrian?””
“Yes?””
“Did you know about Tessa?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
The answer hit harder than I expected.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I needed proof.””
My anger rose.
“Proof?””
“Yes.””
“You let me plan an entire wedding while you investigated my fiancé?””
His voice remained calm.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head even though he couldn’t see me.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
The elevator reached the lobby.
People walked past me laughing, carrying shopping bags, living normal lives.
My entire world had collapsed, and strangers were buying coffee.
“I’m done being protected,” I said.
“Emma—”
“No. If you know something, tell me now.””
“I can’t.””
I stared at the phone.
“Why?””
“Because Cole isn’t the only person involved.””
The lobby suddenly felt colder.
“What does that mean?””
Before Adrian could answer, another voice came through the phone.
A woman’s voice.
A familiar voice.
“Emma?””
I turned.
My blood ran cold.
Tessa was standing near the hotel entrance.
But she wasn’t alone.
Beside her was a man I had never seen before.
A man holding a file folder.
A man who looked exactly like Cole.
Except older.
And much more serious.
Adrian.
The voice on the phone went silent.
Because the man standing ten feet away from me was looking directly into my eyes.
Then he said:
“Emma, don’t open that folder.””
I looked down.
At the folder in his hand.
At the name written across the front.
My name.
May you like
And underneath it, one word:
*Evidence.*
