Amused

Chapter 7: The Secret My Family Buried

I had spent my entire adult life believing I knew the worst thing that could happen to me.

I thought it was heartbreak.

I thought it was betrayal.

I thought the most painful moment of my life would always be standing in a hotel room and watching the person I loved choose someone else.

I was wrong.

Because heartbreak comes from losing something you had.

Fear comes from realizing something was taken from you before you even knew it existed.

And as I stared at the folder labeled *The Bennett Family Secret*, I felt like I was looking at a door I had spent years keeping locked.

A door I never expected anyone else to open.

“Emma.””

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

I looked up.

He was watching me carefully.

Not like someone searching for answers.

Like someone worried about what those answers would do to me.

“Where did he get this?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

That silence told me more than words could.

I picked up the folder.

It felt heavier than it should have.

My hands shook slightly as I opened it.

The first page was a copy of an old newspaper article.

The paper was yellowed.

The edges were worn.

But the headline was still clear.

*LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD AFTER COMPANY COLLAPSE*

I stopped breathing.

Because beneath the headline was a name.

My father.

Richard Bennett.

I stared at the page.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Tessa stepped closer.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“This isn’t real.””

Adrian didn’t say anything.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

His expression tightened.

“I knew there was something involving your father.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew about my family?””

“I knew Cole had been researching it.””

“Researching?””

I laughed softly.

The sound was empty.

“That’s what we’re calling it?””

Adrian looked away.

“He was digging.””

“Why?””

“That’s what I was trying to find out.””

I looked back at the article.

My father.

A man I remembered as kind.

A man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

A man who packed my lunch every morning before school.

A man who disappeared from my life when I was nineteen.

The official story had always been simple.

The company failed.

He couldn’t recover.

He left because he was ashamed.

My mother never talked about it.

I stopped asking.

But now…

Now Cole had a file.

A file that suggested there was more.

“What does this have to do with me?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

He took a breath.

“Your father didn’t just lose the company.””

“What happened?””

“He was blamed for something he didn’t do.””

The room went silent.

Tessa looked confused.

“What?””

Adrian glanced at her.

“You didn’t know?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I looked back at him.

“Then who did?””

“That’s the problem.””

He pointed at the documents.

“Someone wanted the truth hidden.””

I flipped through the pages.

There were financial records.

Emails.

Copies of old contracts.

Names I didn’t recognize.

Until one name appeared again and again.

Marston.

My stomach dropped.

“Their family?””

Adrian nodded.

“My father’s company was connected to yours.””

“How?””

“I don’t know the entire story.””

I slammed the folder shut.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then what do you know?””

He was silent for a moment.

Then:

“I know Cole found something.””

“What?””

“A document.””

“What document?””

Adrian looked at the folder.

“A document that could clear your father’s name.””

My heartbeat changed.

After all these years.

After years of people whispering.

After years of wondering why my father left.

There might actually be proof.

But then another thought hit me.

“If Cole found this…”

“He did.””

“Why would he hide it?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because information is power.””

The words were simple.

But they made everything worse.

Cole didn’t just know my secrets.

He collected them.

He stored them.

He waited.

“Why marry me?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question that mattered.

Not Tessa.

Not the apartment.

Not the cameras.

Why me?

Why did Cole spend three years building a relationship with me?

Why did he propose?

Why did he plan a wedding?

If he wanted something from me, what was it?

Adrian looked at the documents.

“I think he needed access.””

“To what?””

“Your family records.””

I frowned.

“My family records?””

“Yes.””

“My father has been gone for years.””

“Exactly.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“People assumed the past was buried.””

Adrian picked up another paper.

“But Cole didn’t.””

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Cole.

Everyone went silent.

I almost ignored it.

Then Adrian said:

“Answer.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because now we know he’s watching.””

I hesitated.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

For a few seconds, there was nothing.

Then Cole spoke.

“Emma.””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing his voice hurt more than I expected.

“What do you want?””

“I want you to stop listening to Adrian.””

I looked at him across the room.

“He’s telling me the truth.””

Cole laughed quietly.

A sound I used to love.

Now it made me sick.

“You really think that?””

“Yes.””

“Emma, you don’t know what he’s doing.””

“What are you doing?””

Silence.

Then:

“I’m trying to protect you.””

The same words.

Again.

I gripped the phone.

“From what?””

“From people who want to use you.””

I looked at Adrian.

The irony was almost unbearable.

“You mean like you?””

Cole didn’t answer.

That silence hurt.

“Why did you buy an apartment in my name?””

The silence became longer.

Long enough.

“Who told you that?””

My stomach turned.

Because he didn’t deny it.

“You did.””

“Emma.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You don’t get to change the subject.””

“Listen to me.””

“No. You listen.””

I walked away from the others.

“Three days ago, I thought I knew you.””

My voice shook.

“I thought you were the person I was going to spend my life with.””

Cole said nothing.

“And now I’m finding out you had a secret apartment, hidden cameras, and files about my family.””

“Emma—”

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then his voice changed.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Tired.

“Because I was trying to fix something.””

“What?””

“Something your father started.””

I froze.

The room disappeared.

“What did you say?””

Cole continued.

“Your father wasn’t innocent.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“You don’t know anything about my father.””

“I know more than you do.””

I looked at the folder.

At the evidence.

At the years of unanswered questions.

“What did he do?””

Cole’s voice lowered.

“He stole from my family.””

Adrian stepped forward.

I didn’t need to look at him to know he heard.

“That’s a lie,” Adrian said.

Cole went silent.

“Is Adrian there?””

I didn’t answer.

He laughed quietly.

“Of course he is.””

“What does that mean?””

“Emma, he’s been waiting for this moment.””

“Waiting for what?””

“For you to hate me.””

The words hit strangely.

Because they sounded almost sincere.

Almost.

“I don’t understand.””

“You will.””

“Cole—”

“Ask Adrian why he never told you his father was the reason yours disappeared.””

My blood went cold.

I looked at Adrian.

He didn’t move.

And that scared me.

Because he didn’t look surprised.

He looked caught.

“Adrian?””

Nobody spoke.

“Adrian?””

Finally, he said:

“Emma…”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What?””

He looked at the folder.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“I was hoping you would never have to find out this way.””

The call with Cole ended.

The apartment became silent.

I stared at Adrian.

“What did he mean?””

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian.””

His face changed.

The calm mask disappeared.

And for the first time since I met him…

He looked afraid.

“My father wasn’t just connected to yours.””

He swallowed.

“He was there the night your father disappeared.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Adrian looked down.

“And I was there too.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at me.

May you like

And the next words shattered everything I thought I knew.

“I’m saying I was the last person who saw your father alive.””
