Chapter 9: The Woman Who Started It All
The line went dead.
I kept the phone against my ear, waiting for my mother to speak again.
Nothing.
“Mom?””
Silence.
“Mom!””
The nurse touched my shoulder.
“Emma, breathe.””
I lowered the phone.
My daughter kicked hard beneath my palm.
For the first time since the nightmare began, I didn’t think of the money.
I thought of a sixteen-year-old girl.
Rachel.
A baby taken from her.
A marriage built on a secret.
And a family trust created decades before I understood what an inheritance even was.
My mother had spent my entire life protecting me from the truth.
And now that truth had followed me into a hospital room.
The door burst open.
Daniel stumbled inside.
There was blood on his sleeve.
“Daniel!””
“I’m okay.””
I grabbed his arm.
“You’re bleeding.””
“It’s not mine.””
The nurse rushed toward him.
“What happened?””
“Someone attacked one of the officers in the basement.””
My heart hammered.
“Dad?””
“Gone.””
“Mom?””
“Gone.””
“Claire?””
He looked at me.
“We found her.””
My breath caught.
“Where?””
“In the old greenhouse behind your parents’ house.””
Officer Lewis entered behind him, followed by two uniformed officers.
His face was grim.
“She wasn’t alone.””
“Rachel,” I whispered.
He nodded.
“Rachel Morgan was there.””
My stomach twisted.
“Is she alive?””
“Yes.””
“Is she hurt?””
“Not physically.””
“Then why was she hiding?””
Officer Lewis looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
“Because she was terrified of your father.””
I stared at them.
“Where is she now?””
“She’s being brought here.””
I closed my eyes.
The woman whose name had appeared on my birth records.
The woman whose identity had been attached to my unborn daughter.
The woman my grandmother had apparently spent decades protecting.
My biological mother.
Rachel.
A few minutes later, the door opened again.
Two officers entered.
Between them walked a woman I had seen only in photographs.
Brown hair.
Pale blue eyes.
A thin scar beside her eyebrow.
Rachel Morgan.
She looked at me.
And stopped.
Her face crumpled.
“Oh my God.””
I couldn’t speak.
She covered her mouth.
“You have her eyes.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Your grandmother’s.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“My grandmother?””
Rachel nodded through tears.
“Evelyn.””
The name landed differently.
My grandmother had always been the only person in the family who treated me as though I mattered more than the inheritance.
She had died believing I was her granddaughter.
Or perhaps she had known the truth all along.
“Why did she create the trust?”” I asked.
Rachel looked at the floor.
“To stop William.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“From what?””
Rachel looked at him.
“From owning us.””
Officer Lewis pulled a chair beside my bed.
“Rachel, I need your statement.””
She nodded.
“I’ll tell you everything.””
She sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“When I was sixteen, I got pregnant.””
I looked at her.
“With me.””
“Yes.””
“William was my father.””
Rachel nodded.
“He was twenty-three.””
Her eyes filled.
“He told me he loved me. He told me he would marry me. He told me I was special.””
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
“What happened?””
“He found out my family had money.””
Officer Lewis watched her carefully.
“What kind of money?””
“My parents owned several businesses. William wanted access to them.””
Rachel swallowed.
“When I became pregnant, he told me the baby would solve everything.””
I felt sick.
“He wanted me?””
“No.””
Rachel looked directly at me.
“He wanted you.””
The room fell silent.
“He told me that if he married me, he could eventually control my family’s assets through our child.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“So he planned this before Emma was born.””
“Yes.””
Rachel looked down.
“But my parents discovered what he was doing.””
“What did they do?””
“They paid him to disappear.””
“And you?””
“My parents told everyone the baby had died.””
I stared at her.
“My mother thought I was dead?””
Rachel nodded.
“She was twenty-three when she agreed to marry him.””
I turned toward the nurse.
The room felt too small.
“You knew she had me?””
“Yes.””
“Did you ever see me?””
Rachel shook her head.
“Not after the adoption.””
“Adoption?””
“It wasn’t a legal adoption.””
Officer Lewis frowned.
“What?””
“My parents arranged a private transfer. They falsified records. Susan took you.””
My chest tightened.
“So Mom knew.””
“She knew everything.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Because William found you.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“He found out you were alive.””
“When?””
“Years later.””
“How?””
“My parents hired a lawyer to keep him away. Evelyn helped them.””
“My grandmother.””
“Yes.””
Rachel looked at me.
“She discovered William was still trying to use you as a financial instrument.””
I shook my head.
“That’s why the trust exists.””
Rachel nodded.
“She created it because she knew what he would do when you had children.””
Daniel spoke.
“Why Emma’s first child?””
“Because Evelyn made one condition.””
Rachel looked at me.
“The money would belong to Emma’s first child by blood.””
I understood.
“Not by legal name.””
“By blood.””
“So they needed my baby.””
“Yes.””
“And they needed a fake mother.””
Rachel nodded.
“Me.””
My voice dropped.
“But you're my mother.””
“I am.””
“Then why would you help them?””
Rachel’s expression broke.
“I didn't.””
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out a folded envelope.
And handed it to Officer Lewis.
“This was sent to me six weeks ago.””
He opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Me leaving the grocery store.
Me at a prenatal appointment.
Daniel carrying boxes into our house.
My parents visiting.
Claire entering our back door.
Rachel’s voice trembled.
“William found me.””
I stared at the photographs.
“He threatened me.””
“With what?””
“My son.””
I looked at her.
“You have another child?””
“A seventeen-year-old boy.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“Where is he?””
Rachel shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Officer Lewis immediately became serious.
“Who has him?””
“William.””
The room went silent.
“He took my son two weeks ago.””
My stomach clenched.
“Why?””
“To make me cooperate.””
Rachel looked at me.
“He said if I didn't sign the documents, he would make my son disappear.””
Daniel’s fist tightened.
“Where is your son now?””
“I don't know.””
Officer Lewis stood.
“Name.””
“Evan Morgan.””
“Age?””
“Seventeen.””
“Recent photograph?””
Rachel nodded.
Her hands shook as she pulled out her phone.
Officer Lewis photographed it.
Then he made a call.
I stared at Rachel.
“So the woman in the fake birth certificate…”
“Was supposed to be me.””
“But you're not the woman in the fake pregnancy record.””
“No.””
“Then who is?””
Rachel looked at me.
“I don't know.””
Officer Lewis stopped mid-call.
“What?””
Rachel pointed at the fake medical record on the table.
“That isn’t my information.””
We all looked at the document.
“What do you mean?””
“I was born in March.””
“What?””
Rachel pointed.
“My medical records would show my blood type, allergies, previous pregnancies. That chart isn't mine.””
The nurse took the paper.
She scanned it.
Then frowned.
“She's right.””
“What?”” Daniel asked.
“The blood type on this record is O-positive.””
Rachel shook her head.
“I’m A-negative.””
My heart stopped.
“Then whose chart is this?””
The nurse looked at the patient number.
Her face changed.
“Wait.””
She walked to the computer.
Typed rapidly.
Then went completely still.
“What?”” I asked.
She turned the screen around.
The patient number belonged to another woman.
Not Rachel.
Not me.
A woman named *Susan Carter*.
My adoptive mother.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“No.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Why would Susan’s patient record be used as Rachel’s?””
Officer Lewis stepped closer.
“Because someone wanted the hospital to believe Rachel had a medical history she didn’t have.””
I looked at my mother’s name.
Susan Carter.
The woman who had raised me.
The woman who had called me her daughter every day of my life.
The woman who had warned me about my father.
The woman who had stolen the trust documents.
Why would her medical record be part of the plan?
Then I remembered the blood type.
My father’s records said AB-positive.
Mine said A-positive.
My mother’s records said O-positive.
None of it matched.
Unless—
“Daniel.””
He turned.
“Get my childhood medical records.””
“We have them.””
“Not the copies. The originals.””
Officer Lewis looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because my mother may have changed more than my birth certificate.””
Rachel suddenly stood.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
“What?””
“Evelyn didn’t create the trust just for the money.””
“Then why?””
Rachel stared at me.
“Because William wasn’t your only threat.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
“He had a partner.””
“Who?””
Rachel looked toward the hallway.
“Someone inside your family.””
I swallowed.
“Claire?””
Rachel shook her head.
“Not Claire.””
“My father?””
“No.””
“My aunt Margaret?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your mother.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
“She was the one who helped me disappear.””
I felt like I had been struck.
“You said she protected me.””
“She did.””
“Then why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Rachel took a breath.
“She didn’t steal the trust documents to destroy them.””
She looked at Officer Lewis.
“She stole them to keep William from finding the original clause.””
“What clause?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“The clause that exposes him.””
Officer Lewis frowned.
“Exposes him for what?””
Rachel whispered:
“For what he did to me.””
Daniel stared at her.
I felt my daughter kick again.
Once.
Twice.
Then Rachel said the words that changed everything.
“The original trust contains a DNA provision.””
I swallowed.
“What kind?””
“If Emma’s biological parentage was ever disputed, the trust required a test.””
“And?””
Rachel looked at me.
“The results would trigger the trust immediately.””
I frowned.
“Why would William want that?””
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“Because the DNA test doesn't only identify you.””
She pointed toward Daniel.
“It identifies your daughter’s father, too.””
Daniel went still.
Rachel continued.
“And William has spent twenty-six years making sure nobody ever tested his blood against yours.””
Officer Lewis stepped closer.
“Why would he be afraid of the result?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because William is not your biological father.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He raised you because he was paid to.””
I shook my head.
“Then who is?””
Rachel cried.
“Evelyn’s attorney kept the truth hidden.””
She looked toward the evidence bag containing the trust papers.
“The man who is your biological father is the reason William wanted the baby taken before tomorrow’s meeting.””
The hospital room went silent.
“Who?””
Rachel opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, Officer Lewis’s phone rang.
He listened.
Then his face went pale.
“Mr. Carter is at the courthouse.””
Daniel stood.
“Why?””
Officer Lewis looked directly at me.
“He just filed for emergency custody of the unborn child.””
A beat.
May you like
Then:
“And he brought the DNA test results with him.””
