Amused

Chapter 5: The Emergency Exit

The door handle turned again.

Slowly.

The nurse stepped backward.

Officer Lewis reached for his weapon.

“Everybody stay behind the bed.””

Daniel moved toward me instead.

“Emma, don’t move.””

The handle stopped.

For one heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then the door slammed inward.

A security guard stumbled through.

“Lock the door!”” Officer Lewis shouted.

The guard twisted around.

“Someone pulled the emergency alarm downstairs. Half the lobby is being evacuated.””

“Who was at the door?”” Daniel demanded.

“I don’t know. I saw two men running toward the stairwell.””

Officer Lewis pushed the door shut and locked it.

The hallway filled with shouting.

Footsteps pounded across the floor.

Then the lights came back on.

My heart was hammering.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“Are you okay?””

“I’m fine.””

“You’re shaking.””

“So are you.””

He looked at me.

For the first time all night, the calm mask slipped.

“I thought they got in.””

“So did I.””

Officer Lewis spoke into his radio.

“I need the east stairwell secured. Nobody enters maternity without authorization.””

A voice crackled back.

Then another officer responded.

“Unit Seven, we have visual on the suspects.””

Officer Lewis listened.

“Description?””

A pause.

“Male, dark coat. Female, cream cardigan.””

My blood turned cold.

“Aunt Margaret,” I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

“You saw the video.””

“I know that cardigan.””

Officer Lewis was already moving toward the door.

“Stay inside.””

Daniel followed him.

“No.””

Officer Lewis turned.

“Mr. Carter—”

“My wife is not staying here alone.””

“She won’t be alone.””

Daniel looked at me.

I shook my head.

“Go.””

He hesitated.

“I’ll be right outside.””

He kissed my forehead.

Then he and Officer Lewis disappeared into the corridor.

The nurse stayed beside me.

I could hear the hospital changing around us.

Doors locking.

Phones ringing.

People being redirected.

A baby crying somewhere down the hallway.

The nurse checked the monitor.

“Your little girl’s heart rate is holding steady.””

I exhaled.

“Thank you.””

She smiled faintly.

“You’ve got a fighter.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“She has to be.””

The nurse adjusted the blanket.

“Do you have family nearby?””

I almost laughed.

“Yes.””

“Are they helping?””

I looked toward the locked door.

“I’m starting to think they’re the reason I’m here.””

Before the nurse could answer, my phone buzzed.

One message.

Unknown number.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO YOUR MOTHER.*

I stared at it.

Then another appeared.

*SHE TRIED TO STOP US.*

My throat tightened.

I showed the nurse.

She immediately called for security.

A third message appeared.

*YOUR BABY DOESN’T HAVE TO DIE.*

I stopped breathing.

The nurse grabbed my phone.

“Don’t respond.””

“I wasn’t going to.””

Then the final message arrived.

*SHE JUST HAS TO BE BORN UNDER THE WRONG NAME.*

I stared at the screen.

The words made no sense.

Not at first.

Then the memory returned.

The beneficiary amendment.

The medical authorization.

My mother’s missing trust documents.

My father’s warning that I wouldn’t make it to the meeting.

And now—

Born under the wrong name.

I whispered, “What are they planning?””

The nurse looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I looked toward the door.

“Where’s Daniel?””

“He went with the officer.””

“I need him.””

“I’ll call him.””

She reached for the room phone.

A voice came through the speaker before she could dial.

“This is Dr. Patel. I need Mrs. Carter transferred to Labor and Delivery immediately.””

The nurse frowned.

“Why?””

“There’s been a breach on this floor. We’re moving high-risk patients.””

“Okay.””

She hung up.

I pushed myself higher.

“Can I move?””

“We’ll use the bed.””

The nurse started unlocking the wheels.

I glanced at the corridor.

“Did Dr. Patel say where Daniel is?””

“No.””

“Call him.””

“I will.””

The door opened.

Daniel came in.

His face was flushed.

“Emma.””

I sagged with relief.

“What happened?””

“They found your father.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

“In the parking garage.””

“Was he alone?””

“No.””

“Who was with him?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your aunt Margaret.””

The nurse froze.

“Did they catch them?””

“No.””

Officer Lewis entered behind him.

“We detained both for questioning.””

I stared at him.

“Then why are you saying ‘no’?””

“Because they were in separate vehicles, and we found someone else with them.””

“Who?””

Officer Lewis pulled a plastic evidence bag from his pocket.

Inside was a hospital visitor badge.

My name was printed on it.

I stared.

“That’s mine.””

“No,” he said.

“Look at the expiration date.””

I leaned closer.

The badge was identical to mine.

Same name.

Same photograph.

Same hospital credentials.

Except the photograph had been digitally altered.

My face was there.

But beneath it was a different date of birth.

Daniel looked at Officer Lewis.

“Who made that?””

“We’re tracing it.””

“Why would someone forge Emma’s hospital ID?””

Officer Lewis didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said, “Because it may not be for entering the hospital.””

“What is it for?””

“To remove someone from it.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“You think they’re going to take me?””

“We think someone intended to.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“What do you mean, intended?””

Officer Lewis looked at the nurse.

“Your father had paperwork in his vehicle.””

“What paperwork?””

“A discharge authorization.””

I stared at him.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

“But I never signed anything.””

“It didn’t require your signature.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did it say?””

“That Emma Carter was being transferred to a private maternity facility at the request of her legal representative.””

I felt numb.

“My father.””

“Yes.””

“But he isn’t my legal representative.””

“Not yet.””

Daniel looked at him sharply.

“What does that mean?””

Officer Lewis handed him a copy.

“Your father’s attorney filed an emergency petition this morning.””

My stomach twisted.

“For what?””

“Temporary medical guardianship.””

The nurse stared.

“They’re trying to take control of her care?””

“And potentially the pregnancy,” Officer Lewis said.

Daniel swore under his breath.

I could barely process it.

“They could transfer me?””

“Not legally without court approval.””

“But they were trying.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the fake hospital badge.

“And whoever was supposed to do it?””

Officer Lewis nodded.

“Would present themselves as hospital staff.””

The room fell silent.

I thought about the woman in the cream cardigan.

The shadow in the nursery.

The messages.

My mother saying they needed the baby gone.

Then I remembered something else.

“Aunt Margaret isn’t just my father’s sister.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What else?””

“She was a nurse.””

Officer Lewis’s expression changed.

“How long?””

“Twenty-five years.””

“Where?””

“The same hospital.””

The nurse suddenly stepped back.

“She still has hospital contacts.””

I nodded.

“She retired last year.””

Officer Lewis turned toward the door.

“Then we have a serious problem.””

A loud announcement echoed through the corridor.

“Security to Labor and Delivery.””

Then another voice came over the intercom.

“Security to Labor and Delivery immediately.””

The nurse looked at me.

“I’m not leaving you.””

Daniel stood beside the bed.

“Nobody is.””

The door opened again.

A second nurse rushed inside, breathless.

“Dr. Patel says she wants Emma moved now.””

“Why?”” the nurse beside me asked.

“The maternity elevators are compromised.””

Officer Lewis’s eyes narrowed.

“Compromised how?””

“We found a visitor badge in the elevator.””

“What kind?””

“Patient transfer.””

Officer Lewis took a slow breath.

“Exactly what I was afraid of.””

Daniel looked at me.

“They’re still trying.””

The nurse began pushing my bed toward the exit.

We moved into the hallway.

Two security officers joined us.

Doors opened and closed as we passed.

I kept one hand on my stomach.

My daughter moved again.

A tiny flutter.

Then another.

“I feel her,” I whispered.

Daniel smiled for half a second.

“Good.””

We turned into another corridor.

Then stopped.

A woman stood at the far end.

Cream cardigan.

Dark hair.

Perfectly still.

Aunt Margaret.

She looked directly at me.

Nobody moved.

Officer Lewis reached for his radio.

“Margaret Carter, step away from the corridor.””

She smiled.

Not nervously.

Not angrily.

Calmly.

Then she raised one hand.

In it was a folded piece of paper.

“Emma,” she called.

My heartbeat thundered.

“What?””

“You deserve to know the truth before they move you.””

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Put the paper down.””

Margaret laughed softly.

“Daniel, you still think you’re protecting her.””

“What’s on the paper?””

“The original birth plan.””

My blood went cold.

“I never gave you my birth plan.””

“You didn’t.””

Margaret looked directly at my stomach.

“Your mother did.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Margaret unfolded the paper.

“This was filed three weeks ago.””

She held it up.

Under the heading *Parent/Guardian Information*, I saw a name.

Not mine.

Not Daniel’s.

Someone else.

I couldn’t read the rest.

“Who put that name there?”” I shouted.

Margaret smiled.

“Your sister.””

Claire.

My knees weakened.

Daniel caught the bed rail.

Officer Lewis stepped forward.

“Drop the document.””

Margaret ignored him.

Then she said something that made the blood drain from my face.

“Emma, your daughter already has another identity.””

She turned the page.

“And she was never supposed to leave this hospital with you.””

Behind us, a hospital door clicked open.

I turned.

A woman in scrubs stepped into the corridor.

May you like

She held a newborn carrier.

And she was walking straight toward my room.
