Amused

Chapter 6: The Name on the Form

The woman in scrubs pushed the newborn carrier toward us.

My entire body went rigid.

Officer Lewis stepped in front of my bed.

“Stop.””

She did.

The carrier swung gently in her hand.

She looked at him with an almost bored expression.

“I was told to take the patient to Labor and Delivery.””

“By whom?””

“Dr. Mercer.””

“There is no Dr. Mercer assigned to this floor.””

Her expression flickered.

Just once.

Then she smiled.

“Maybe there is.””

Daniel moved closer to me.

“Who are you?””

“Transport.””

“Badge.””

She touched the plastic ID clipped to her chest.

“Here.””

Officer Lewis took one look at it.

Then his hand went to his radio.

“Security, lock down this corridor.””

The woman’s smile disappeared.

She dropped the carrier.

Daniel lunged forward instinctively, but Officer Lewis caught his arm.

The carrier hit the floor.

Its lid flew open.

There was no baby inside.

Only a stack of folded blankets.

My stomach turned.

The woman suddenly ran.

Security officers came from both ends of the corridor.

One tackled her near the stairwell.

She screamed.

“You don’t understand!””

Officer Lewis crouched beside her.

“Then explain.””

“She has to be moved!””

“Who ordered you?””

The woman twisted against the officer holding her.

“Margaret!””

I looked toward the far end of the hallway.

My aunt was gone.

Her cream cardigan had vanished around the corner.

Daniel stared after her.

“I’m going.””

Officer Lewis stood.

“No. Security has the exits covered.””

“She planned this.””

“And she’s not getting far.””

Daniel stayed beside me.

The woman in scrubs was being handcuffed.

I looked down at the empty carrier.

Then at the page Margaret had been holding.

“She said my daughter already has another identity.””

Officer Lewis turned toward me.

“I want that document.””

He walked to Margaret’s abandoned spot and picked up the folded paper.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Daniel.

Daniel read the first page.

Then the second.

Then he looked at me.

His face had gone white.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“This is your daughter’s birth record.””

I stared at him.

“She isn’t born.””

“I know.””

“But this has a date.””

He turned the paper around.

A date had been typed three weeks into the future.

A full name.

A hospital.

A mother.

A father.

Everything.

Except the parents weren’t us.

The mother listed was a woman named *Rachel Morgan*.

The father was *Thomas Morgan*.

I had never heard either name.

Officer Lewis read it.

“This is fabricated.””

Daniel pointed to the bottom.

“There’s a birth certificate number.””

Officer Lewis took out his phone.

“I’m checking it.””

Seconds passed.

He looked up.

“The number exists.””

My mouth went dry.

“How?””

“Someone generated it through the state system.””

“But how could they register a child who hasn’t been born?””

“They couldn’t legally.””

“Then what is this?””

Officer Lewis looked at the fake record again.

“A prepared identity.””

The phrase made my blood run cold.

“For my baby?””

He nodded.

“Potentially.””

Daniel gripped the side of the bed.

“Why would anyone create an identity before birth?””

Officer Lewis looked at me.

“To move a child without creating the appearance that anything was wrong.””

I felt suddenly sick.

“So they weren’t trying to kill her.””

“Not necessarily.””

“They wanted to take her.””

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than the kick had.

Someone had planned to take my unborn daughter.

Not after she was born.

Before.

The plan had been sitting inside a hospital system for weeks.

A baby who did not exist yet had paperwork.

A mother she did not have.

A father she did not have.

And apparently, a destination.

Daniel looked at the fake birth record again.

“Rachel Morgan.””

I shook my head.

“I don't know her.””

Officer Lewis asked the woman in handcuffs.

“Who is Rachel Morgan?””

She stared at the floor.

No answer.

“Who is Rachel Morgan?”” he repeated.

Still nothing.

Then she whispered, “Ask Claire.””

My heart stopped.

“Why Claire?””

The woman closed her eyes.

“She arranged everything.””

Daniel stepped toward her.

“What exactly did she arrange?””

The woman looked up.

“The delivery.””

Silence.

“What delivery?”” I asked.

“Your baby.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“My wife is twenty-six weeks.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you talking about?””

The woman’s lips trembled.

“She wasn’t supposed to make it this far.””

I felt ice spread through my chest.

Officer Lewis crouched closer.

“Who paid you?””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know what it was at first.””

“What changed?””

“I saw the medical file.””

“What was in it?””

The woman started crying.

“The medication schedule.””

Daniel looked at me.

Officer Lewis noticed.

“What medication schedule?””

“She was being given something every few days.””

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

“By whom?””

“I don’t know.””

“You entered her room.””

“Yes.””

“You saw the medication.””

“No.””

The woman swallowed.

“It was in the computer.””

Officer Lewis’s eyes narrowed.

“Whose login?””

She hesitated.

Then said, “Claire Carter.””

My sister’s name again.

Daniel closed his eyes.

I whispered, “She has access to hospital systems?””

The woman shook her head.

“She shouldn’t.””

“Then how?””

“I don’t know.””

Officer Lewis stood.

“Get the cyber team.””

One of the security officers rushed away.

The woman was taken down the hall.

I watched until she disappeared.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“My sister has been planning this.””

He didn’t answer immediately.

“Maybe.””

“Maybe?””

“I need proof before I let you build the rest of the story around her.””

I looked at him.

“She kicked me.””

“I know.””

“She knew about the trust.””

“I know.””

“She had my house password.””

“I know.””

“She asked about what would happen if the baby wasn't born alive.””

“I know.””

“She is connected to a forged birth record.””

Daniel crouched beside me.

“I know.””

His eyes filled with anger.

“But I need to know whether she was the one giving you the medication, or whether she was working for someone else.””

That distinction mattered.

Because Claire had always been impulsive.

Jealous.

Cruel when cornered.

But this was different.

This was organized.

Professional.

Expensive.

Someone had forged state records.

Someone had manipulated hospital systems.

Someone had prepared a fake identity for my unborn child.

That wasn’t a family tantrum.

It was a plan.

A nurse hurried into the corridor.

“Officer?””

Everyone turned.

She held a tablet.

“We found the unauthorized chart access.””

Officer Lewis took it.

“User?””

“Claire Carter.””

Daniel’s face darkened.

“What did she access?””

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“Your wife’s prenatal records.””

“Anything else?””

“The delivery schedule.””

My heart skipped.

“What delivery schedule?””

“The scheduled cesarean list.””

“I don’t have a cesarean scheduled.””

The nurse nodded.

“I know.””

She showed me the screen.

My name was listed.

Under procedure:

*Emergency C-section — 8:00 a.m.*

Tomorrow.

My blood went cold.

“I never agreed to that.””

“No.””

“Who scheduled it?””

The nurse scrolled.

“Request submitted through the maternity administration portal.””

“By whom?””

She looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“Dr. Mercer.””

The fake doctor.

Daniel said, “There is no Dr. Mercer.””

“I know,” the nurse replied.

“That’s why I reported it.””

Officer Lewis took the tablet.

“Can you cancel this?””

“I already did.””

“Good.””

He turned to Daniel.

“How long until eight?””

Daniel checked the clock.

“Eleven hours.””

Officer Lewis nodded.

“Then we assume whoever created this knows the schedule is compromised.””

I stared at the screen.

“Why eight?””

Nobody answered.

Then I remembered the trust meeting.

Nine in the morning.

My stomach dropped.

Eight.

One hour before the trust became permanent.

One hour before the legal protection took effect.

My baby was supposed to be born at eight.

The trust appointment was at nine.

And suddenly my mother’s words made horrifying sense.

They didn’t want to steal the trust.

They wanted to control what happened before it became permanent.

Daniel read my face.

“You figured something out.””

“The timing.””

He frowned.

“The fake C-section is scheduled for eight.””

“Yes.””

“So?””

“The trust meeting is at nine.””

Officer Lewis went completely still.

“Who scheduled the meeting?””

“Mr. Harris.””

“Could the birth trigger anything legally?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

“If they could convince everyone the baby was born to somebody else…”

He finished the thought.

“She would never activate the trust.””

Exactly.

The trust would still exist.

But not for my child.

For whoever legally appeared to be her mother.

Rachel Morgan.

My head spun.

“They don’t need my baby dead.””

Daniel’s voice was low.

“They need her documented as someone else.””

Officer Lewis nodded.

“That would explain the false birth record.””

“And the fake medical transfer,” Daniel said.

“And the fake C-section.””

I stared at the screen.

The pieces were fitting together.

Too neatly.

Then another thought struck me.

“Where’s my mother?””

Officer Lewis checked his phone.

“Still missing.””

“And Claire?””

“Not at your parents’ house.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Then one of them has Rachel Morgan.””

My skin prickled.

Officer Lewis started issuing orders.

“Search every property connected to the Carters. Get warrants for the digital records. Freeze access to the hospital portal and notify the state registrar.””

He stopped.

Then looked directly at me.

“Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you something important.””

“What?””

“Does the name Rachel Morgan mean anything to you?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

He nodded.

Then he opened a second file.

Inside was a photograph.

A woman in her thirties.

Brown hair.

Pale blue eyes.

A small scar beside her left eyebrow.

I stared at the photograph.

I had never seen her before.

Then I noticed the hospital bracelet on her wrist.

Officer Lewis spoke quietly.

“Because this woman was admitted to this hospital yesterday.””

My heart stopped.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

Daniel took the photograph.

“Under what name?””

Officer Lewis looked at me.

“Rachel Morgan.””

He paused.

“And according to the intake record, she told the hospital staff she was here because she was pregnant.””

I stared at the photograph.

“How pregnant?””

Officer Lewis’s voice dropped.

“Twenty-six weeks.””

Daniel and I looked at each other.

Same gestational age.

Same hospital.

Same week.

Then Officer Lewis turned the photograph over.

On the back was a handwritten note.

May you like

Three words.

*Use Emma's baby.*
