Amused

Chapter 9: The Name Hidden in Claire’s Diary

The photograph fell from the woman’s hand and landed on the wooden floor.

I stared at it.

Then I picked it up.

My fingers were shaking.

There was no mistake.

The woman in the picture was Claire.

My Claire.

The woman I married.

The woman who gave me Emily.

The woman whose voice I still heard in my dreams.

And beside her was Rebecca.

Younger.

Smiling.

Holding a cup of coffee like they were old friends.

Like they had shared a life I knew nothing about.

I looked up.

“Who are you?””

The woman took a slow breath.

“My name is Natalie Bennett.””

My mind searched through every memory.

Bennett.

The name meant nothing.

“You said you’re Claire’s sister.””

“I am.””

“I don’t have a sister-in-law named Natalie.””

“No.””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“You don’t.””

The answer confused me.

“Why?””

“Because Claire never told you about me.””

I looked at my father.

Then at Rebecca.

Then back at Natalie.

“How many people knew things about my wife that I didn’t?””

Nobody answered.

That silence hurt more than the secrets.

I looked at Rebecca.

“You knew her.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you knew Natalie.””

Another nod.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“Everyone knew Claire except me.””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent five years believing I knew my wife.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“But apparently everyone else had a different version of her.””

Natalie stepped closer.

“Claire wanted to protect you.””

“By lying?””

“By keeping you away from something dangerous.””

I looked at her.

“Something dangerous?””

She glanced at Richard.

My father looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying this weight for years.

“Your father knows.””

I turned.

“Knows what?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“I should have told you.””

The anger returned.

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“You should have.””

Emily was still holding my hand.

I noticed.

She was watching everyone.

Confused.

Scared.

I immediately lowered my voice.

Not because I was less angry.

Because my daughter needed me.

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart.””

She looked at me.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

But she wasn’t.

Children always said they were okay when they wanted adults to stop worrying.

“You’re going to stay with Aunt Lisa outside with the officer for a little while.””

She grabbed my hand.

“No.””

My heart broke.

“I’m not leaving you.””

“You’re not.””

“Then why?””

“Because grown-ups need to talk.””

She looked at Rebecca.

Then at Richard.

Then at me.

“Are they bad people?””

The question destroyed me.

Because I didn’t know how to answer.

I touched her cheek.

“Sometimes people make choices that hurt others.””

Emily nodded slowly.

“But you’ll tell me the truth?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Even if it’s scary?””

“Yes.””

She hugged me.

Then my sister took her outside.

The moment the door closed, I turned around.

“Start talking.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at Richard.

“You first.””

My father sat down.

For the first time in my life, he looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“After Claire died, I found a notebook.””

My heart stopped.

“A notebook?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“In her office.””

I frowned.

“Claire didn’t have an office.””

Richard looked at me.

“She did.””

The words made no sense.

“Where?””

“She rented a small room downtown.””

I stared at him.

“She was hiding something.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Richard looked at Natalie.

She nodded.

Then he said:

“Claire was investigating Rebecca.””

Rebecca closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Natalie answered.

“Because Claire discovered Rebecca had been approaching families before.””

I froze.

“What?””

Rebecca immediately spoke.

“That’s not true.””

Natalie looked at her.

“Isn’t it?””

Rebecca said nothing.

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

Natalie walked toward the table and placed another folder down.

“She had a pattern.””

I opened it.

Inside were names.

Dates.

Notes.

My stomach tightened.

“This can’t be real.””

Natalie’s voice was quiet.

“Claire thought Rebecca was looking for a certain type of person.””

“What type?””

“People with resources.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“No.””

She looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You told me you met me by chance.””

“I did.””

“Did you?””

Her silence answered.

I felt sick.

Natalie continued.

“Claire found out Rebecca had researched you before you met.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Why?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I knew who you were.””

The room went silent.

“You knew who I was?””

“Yes.””

“Before the restaurant?””

“Yes.””

“Before our first conversation?””

“Yes.””

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“Why?””

Rebecca wiped her face.

“My mother worked with your father years ago.””

I looked at Richard.

“What?””

My father looked away.

Rebecca continued.

“I knew about your family.””

“So you targeted me.””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She struggled.

“I thought I could become someone you needed.””

I stared at her.

“That’s not love.””

“I know.””

The honesty hurt.

Because it was the first time she wasn’t trying to convince me.

She was admitting it.

Natalie opened another document.

“This is the part Claire never got to finish.””

“What?””

She pointed.

A name was written across the page.

Not Rebecca.

Not Richard.

Someone else.

A name I had never seen before.

*Thomas Vale.*

“Who is that?””

Richard’s face changed.

I noticed.

“You know him.””

My father looked away.

“Dad.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Thomas was my business partner.””

The room went cold.

“What does he have to do with Claire?””

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“Everything.””

I waited.

“He was the person who introduced Rebecca to our family.””

My eyes moved to Rebecca.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

My father continued.

“Thomas knew about our money. He knew about the insurance. He knew Claire trusted people too easily.””

I felt anger rising.

“Then why was he never mentioned?””

“Because Claire found out too late.””

Natalie opened the final document.

“This is what she wrote before she died.””

I looked down.

It was a page from Claire’s diary.

The handwriting was rushed.

Different from the calm letters she used to write.

The first sentence made my hands go numb.

If anything happens to me, Daniel must know the truth.

I kept reading.

Rebecca is not the person I fear most.

I looked at Rebecca.

She was crying.

She is dangerous because she is desperate. But desperation can be controlled.

My breathing stopped.

The person controlling her is the one who knows how to make desperate people believe they have no other choice.

I turned the page.

Only one sentence remained.

Daniel, the person who destroyed our family is someone you trust.

The room became silent.

I looked at my father.

Then Rebecca.

Then Natalie.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed a number I didn’t recognize.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Confident.

Familiar somehow.

“Daniel Carter.””

My body went still.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh.

“You’ve been asking the wrong people questions.””

I looked around.

Everyone watched me.

The voice continued:

“You want to know who planned everything?””

I tightened my grip.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“Ask your father why Claire died before she could expose me.””

I looked at Richard.

His face went pale.

The man continued.

“And ask Rebecca why she agreed to marry you after I told her exactly what would happen if she refused.””

My heart stopped.

Rebecca whispered:

“No…”

The voice said one final thing before the call ended.

“Your wedding didn’t fail today, Daniel.””

A pause.

“It was never meant to happen.””

The line went dead.

And for the first time, my father looked at me with pure fear.

May you like

Because he knew who had called.

And he knew the truth was finally coming for all of us.
