Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew My Wife
“I knew your wife.””
Rebecca’s words stayed in the air.
Not like a confession.
Like an explosion.
I stared at her, waiting for the rest of the sentence.
Waiting for an explanation.
Waiting for anything that could make the world make sense again.
But Rebecca just stood there.
Silent.
And somehow, that was worse.
“You knew Claire?””
My voice sounded strange.
Like it belonged to someone else.
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked down.
“I met her before I met you.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“Where?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I stepped closer.
“Rebecca.””
She looked up.
“She helped me.””
The answer confused me.
“Helped you?””
“Yes.””
“With what?””
Rebecca looked toward the chapel doors.
Toward the place where my daughter had disappeared.
Then she whispered:
“With my past.””
I shook my head.
“No. Stop.””
She looked at me.
“I need you to understand.””
“No.””
My voice rose.
“I spent five years mourning my wife.””
The words came faster now.
“I sat in an empty house every night. I watched my daughter ask why her mother wasn’t coming back. I packed away Claire’s clothes because I couldn’t stand seeing them, and then I took them back out because I couldn’t stand not seeing them.””
Rebecca’s eyes filled with tears.
“And all this time, you knew her?””
“Yes.””
“You knew my wife, and you said nothing.””
“I was afraid.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Afraid?””
“Yes.””
“Of what?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
That answer made me angrier.
Because it sounded selfish.
“You should have lost me.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The police officer approached.
“Mr. Carter?””
I turned.
“We’re heading toward the lake house. A unit is checking the area now.””
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
He looked at Rebecca.
“Is there anything else we should know?””
I wanted to say everything.
I wanted to tell him about every lie.
Every secret.
Every piece of information she hid.
But before I could answer, Rebecca spoke.
“Yes.””
Everyone looked at her.
“There is.””
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, she wasn’t trying to protect herself.
She looked defeated.
“What?””
She took a deep breath.
“Claire didn’t die because of an accident.””
The room went silent.
My entire body froze.
“What did you say?””
Rebecca’s face twisted with pain.
“I don’t know the full truth.””
“Then why would you say that?””
“Because Claire was investigating something before she died.””
My heart started pounding.
“Investigating what?””
Rebecca looked at the folder Mark had brought.
“Someone who was trying to get close to her family.””
My hands went cold.
“Who?””
Rebecca shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You expect me to believe that after everything?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I expect you to hate me.””
That stopped me.
Because there was no defense in her voice.
No manipulation.
Just regret.
“I deserve it.””
I looked away.
I didn’t want sympathy.
Not from her.
Not now.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Laura.
I’m sending the letter now.
A second later, an email arrived.
Attached.
A scanned document.
The subject line made my stomach twist.
*For Daniel — If Rebecca Becomes Part of Your Family*
I opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Claire’s handwriting.
My wife’s.
The first line nearly broke me.
Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened that I was afraid of.
I stopped breathing.
Rebecca saw my face.
“What did she write?””
I didn’t answer.
I kept reading.
I wish I could tell you this in person. I wish I could sit across from you at our kitchen table and explain everything. But if you’re reading this, I probably didn’t get the chance.
My vision blurred.
I had read thousands of messages from Claire.
But this was different.
This was her voice reaching across time.
The most important thing I need you to know is that Emily is not in danger because of something she did. She is in danger because of something someone wants.
I swallowed.
My daughter.
Even before I knew.
Even before the note.
Claire knew.
I met a woman named Rebecca Ellis. She came to me when she was in trouble. I believed she needed help.
I looked up.
Rebecca was crying.
She told me she wanted to escape a difficult situation. She told me she wanted to become a better person. I believed her.
My eyes moved faster.
But later, I discovered she wasn’t telling me everything.
I looked at Rebecca.
“What did you hide from Claire?””
She didn’t answer.
I kept reading.
Rebecca was connected to people who knew about our finances. People who knew about our home. People who knew about my insurance policy.
My heart stopped.
The same things Mark mentioned.
The house.
The money.
The stability.
At first, I thought Rebecca was being used. I thought she was scared. I wanted to help her.
I looked at Rebecca.
“You were in trouble.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“What kind of trouble?””
Her voice was quiet.
“The kind that doesn’t disappear.””
I looked back at the letter.
But then I realized Rebecca wasn’t the only person involved.
A chill ran through me.
Someone else was guiding her.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Someone who knew exactly what would happen if Daniel lost his ability to protect Emily.
I stopped.
My hands shook.
“Who?””
I whispered the word.
Not to anyone.
To Claire.
The next lines were smudged.
Like water had touched the paper.
Maybe tears.
Daniel, don’t trust anyone who tells you Emily needs to be taken away from you.
I looked at Rebecca.
Then continued.
Especially not someone who claims they are doing it for Emily’s own good.
My phone rang.
I almost dropped it.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No voice.
Only breathing.
Then a child’s voice.
“Daddy?””
My heart stopped.
“Emily?””
A small sob.
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
“I don’t know.””
My knees weakened.
“Are you okay?””
“I’m okay.””
“Who are you with?””
Silence.
Then Emily whispered:
“Daddy, I’m sorry I lied.””
My eyes filled.
“You don’t have to be sorry.””
“Yes, I do.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because Rebecca didn’t tell me to leave.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She told me someone else wanted me gone.””
My entire body went cold.
“Who?””
The line crackled.
Emily started crying.
“Daddy, I saw the person who was helping her.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
A sound came from the other end.
A door closing.
A voice in the background.
A voice I recognized.
Then Emily whispered:
“It’s someone you know.””
I held my breath.
“Who is it?””
Emily went silent.
Then she said the name.
The name that made Rebecca cover her mouth in horror.
The name that made Mark take a step back.
The name that turned my entire family upside down.
“Daddy…”
May you like
My daughter’s voice trembled.
“It’s Grandpa.””
