Amused

Chapter 6: The Secret My Wife Took to Her Grave

“Ask your wife.””

Those three words stayed on my screen like a message from another life.

Because my wife had been dead for five years.

And yet, somehow, she was still at the center of everything.

I stared at Rebecca.

She looked away.

That hurt more than anger would have.

Anger was easy.

Anger meant someone was fighting.

But Rebecca looked like someone who had already lost.

“Daniel,” my sister whispered.

I barely heard her.

My mind was racing through every memory I had.

Every conversation.

Every warning sign I ignored.

Every time Rebecca asked about my past.

At the time, I thought she was trying to understand me.

Now I wondered if she had been collecting information.

The police officer cleared his throat.

“Sir, we need to focus on finding your daughter.””

I nodded.

He was right.

Emily first.

Always Emily.

I looked at Rebecca.

“Call Rachel.””

She shook her head.

“She won’t answer me.””

“Try.””

“I already did.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

I stepped closer.

“When did you last talk to her?””

Rebecca looked down.

“Yesterday.””

My heart sank.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

“You were talking to the woman who took my daughter yesterday?””

“I didn’t know she was going to take her.””

“Then what did you think she was going to do?””

Rebecca didn’t answer.

I didn’t need her to.

The silence was becoming a confession.

The officer took notes.

“Do you know where Rachel might go?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Then I stopped.

A memory flashed through my mind.

A small cabin.

A place my wife loved.

A place she used to take Emily when she was a baby.

I looked at my sister.

“Rachel still has the old lake house.””

My sister’s face changed.

“You think she went there?””

“I don’t know.””

But something inside me said yes.

Because Rachel had always loved that place.

And because if someone wanted to disappear with my daughter, they would choose somewhere connected to family.

Somewhere emotional.

Somewhere I wouldn’t think clearly.

The officer immediately made a call.

While he walked away, I looked at Rebecca.

“I need the truth.””

She wiped her face.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I don’t think you do.””

She looked at me.

“I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“I brought you into my daughter’s life.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“And you were planning something behind my back.””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Maybe because it was the first honest thing she had said all day.

“Why?””

Rebecca sat down slowly on the chapel bench.

The woman in the wedding dress suddenly looked smaller.

Older.

Tired.

“I never meant for it to go this far.””

I stood in front of her.

“That’s what people say when they know they went too far.””

She looked at her hands.

“When I met you, I wasn’t looking for someone wealthy.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s exactly what someone would say if they were.””

She flinched.

But she continued.

“I was looking for stability.””

“Stability?””

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“I grew up without it.””

I waited.

“After my father died, my mother lost everything. We moved constantly. I never had a home that felt permanent.””

“That explains your childhood.””

“It explains my choices.””

I shook my head.

“No. It explains your fear.””

She looked at me.

“And fear makes people do terrible things.””

I didn’t answer.

Because that was true.

But fear didn’t excuse hurting my daughter.

Rebecca continued.

“When I met you, I saw someone who had everything I never had.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“A home. A family. Someone who loved you.””

She looked down.

“And I wanted that.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why destroy it?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I became convinced it wasn’t mine.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t unknown.

It was a number I recognized.

A number I hadn’t seen in years.

My wife’s old phone number.

Impossible.

My fingers froze.

Everyone noticed.

“Daniel?””

I didn’t move.

The screen showed the name saved in my contacts.

Claire.

My wife.

Dead for five years.

The call kept ringing.

My sister whispered:

“Daniel…”

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman spoke.

A woman’s voice.

Not Claire.

But someone who had found something that belonged to her.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Laura Bennett.””

I looked at Rebecca.

Her face changed.

The color drained from it.

“Who is this?””

The woman paused.

“I’m Rebecca’s attorney.””

My grip tightened.

“Why are you calling me?””

“Because I believe you need to know the truth before you make any decisions.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“What truth?””

Laura sighed.

“The documents Rebecca prepared were not the beginning.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone else started this plan before Rebecca did.””

The chapel became silent.

I walked away from everyone.

“Who?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Your late wife.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“I’m sorry, Mr. Carter.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

“I understand why you think that.””

“You’re saying my wife planned something involving Emily?””

“I’m saying Claire contacted me before her death.””

My knees almost gave out.

“No.””

“She was concerned.””

“About what?””

Laura’s voice became softer.

“About the people around her daughter.””

I looked back at Rebecca.

She was watching me.

Terrified.

“Why?””

Laura hesitated.

Then said:

“Because Claire believed someone close to your family was trying to separate Emily from you.””

The words hit me.

Someone close.

My mind went through every person I knew.

Every person who had access to my daughter.

Every person who had known Claire.

“Who did she suspect?””

Laura didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“She left instructions that I should only reveal this if something happened to her.””

My hand shook.

“What instructions?””

“She wanted you to receive a letter.””

“A letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Another pause.

Then Laura said:

“I have it.””

My heart raced.

“Send it to me.””

“I can’t.””

“Why not?””

“Because Claire specifically said it should only be given to you when Rebecca became part of the situation.””

I looked at Rebecca.

The room spun.

“What?””

Laura continued:

“She knew Rebecca would eventually enter your life.””

My blood went cold.

“That’s impossible.””

“No, Mr. Carter.””

Her voice became serious.

“Your wife knew Rebecca before you did.””

I froze.

I looked at Rebecca.

She covered her mouth.

And for the first time, I saw something that scared me more than guilt.

Recognition.

She knew exactly what Laura was talking about.

“You knew Claire?””

Rebecca started crying.

“Daniel…”

My voice was barely a whisper.

“How?””

She didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

Laura spoke through the phone.

“That’s the part you need to hear.””

I gripped the phone.

“Tell me.””

“Rebecca didn’t meet you by accident.””

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

“Mr. Carter…”

“No.””

I looked at the woman who had been standing beside me moments before our wedding.

The woman who had promised to love my daughter.

The woman who had hidden documents.

Hidden conversations.

Hidden a past.

“Tell me the truth.””

Laura’s voice lowered.

“Rebecca was already connected to your family before she became your fiancée.””

I stared at Rebecca.

And she finally whispered the words I had been waiting for.

“I knew your wife.””

The chapel went silent.

May you like

Then she added:

“But I never told you how she died.””
