Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Buried With My Father

The photograph remained on my phone screen.

I stared at it until my eyes started to hurt.

My mother.

My aunt Betsy.

And a third person.

A man standing beside them.

A man I hadn’t seen in years.

A man I never expected to see again.

My father’s old business partner.

Victor Hale.

But that wasn’t possible.

Victor Hale was supposed to have left Nashville years ago after my father’s company collapsed.

At least, that was the story I had been told.

The story my mother repeated every time my father’s name came up.

“Your father made mistakes.””

“He trusted the wrong people.””

“He couldn’t handle losing everything.””

That was all I knew.

My father had died believing he had failed.

And I had spent my entire adult life trying to build something better.

Trying to prove I wasn’t like him.

Now I was being told the truth had been hidden from me.

I looked at Emily.

“Where did this come from?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Who sent it?””

“Unknown number.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Ethan.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in the room understood the same thing.

My mother’s secrets had roots.

Deep roots.

And they reached further back than any of us imagined.

I left the restaurant without saying goodbye.

I didn’t have a plan.

I only knew one thing.

I needed answers.

My mother was staying at the house.

The house that had been mine.

The house where she had tried to take control.

When I arrived, she was sitting on the back porch.

Almost like she expected me.

She looked tired.

Older.

But I refused to let that distract me.

“Who is Victor Hale?””

Her face changed instantly.

That was all I needed.

Recognition.

Fear.

“Where did you hear that name?””

I held up my phone.

The photograph was still open.

Her eyes moved to the screen.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, Teresa Bradley looked completely exposed.

“You should not have seen that.””

I laughed softly.

“There it is again.””

“What?””

“You never say I’m wrong.””

She looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She stood.

“Connor, this is complicated.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“It’s simple.””

She looked at me.

“My entire life, you gave me a version of the truth.””

Her expression hardened.

“I protected you.””

“Stop saying that.””

The words came out louder than I intended.

“Stop using that excuse every time you hurt someone.””

She went quiet.

I held up the phone.

“Who is Victor?””

A long silence followed.

Then my mother sat back down.

“He was your father’s partner.””

“I know that.””

“He made a mistake.””

I stared.

“You said Dad made the mistake.””

Her eyes dropped.

And there it was.

The crack.

The first real crack.

“Your father trusted him.””

“And?””

“And Victor betrayed him.””

I waited.

“Then why was he with you?””

My mother didn’t answer.

“Why was he helping you take my company?””

She looked up.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

Her hands trembled slightly.

Something I had never seen before.

“My marriage was falling apart before your father died.””

I said nothing.

“Your father was struggling financially.””

“Because of Victor?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I felt a strange mix of anger and sadness.

My whole life, I had blamed my father.

I had thought he failed.

But maybe he had been fighting something I never knew about.

“What happened the night he died?””

My mother looked away.

“Connor…”

“What happened?””

Her voice became quiet.

“He found out.””

“Found out what?””

“That Victor had been moving money.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

“Enough to destroy the company.””

I stared.

“Then why did you work with him?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because after your father died, I had nothing.””

The answer sounded human.

For a second.

Then I remembered everything else.

The accounts.

The lies.

The manipulation.

“You worked with the person who destroyed Dad.””

“I worked with the person who could help us survive.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You worked with the person who could help you gain control.””

Her face hardened.

“You don’t understand what it was like.””

“Maybe not.””

I looked around.

“At least I didn’t betray everyone trying to avoid being powerless.””

The words hurt her.

But they were true.

She looked at me.

“You think I’m the villain.””

I didn’t answer.

Because the question wasn’t useful.

People could suffer and still hurt others.

People could be afraid and still make terrible choices.

My mother had spent years believing her fear justified everything.

It didn’t.

“What does Victor want now?””

She looked at me.

“He wants what he lost.””

“What?””

“Your company.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because your company was built on the foundation your father created.””

I stared.

“And he thinks it belongs to him?””

My mother didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

That night, I went through old family documents.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed to know.

I found boxes in the storage room.

Old paperwork.

Photos.

Letters.

Things my mother had kept hidden.

At the bottom of one box was a handwritten letter.

From my father.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The paper was old.

The ink had faded.

But the words were clear.

*Connor,*

*If you ever read this, something has gone wrong.*

I stopped breathing.

I kept reading.

*Your mother will tell you I failed. She will tell you I lost everything because I was careless. That is not the truth.*

My heart started pounding.

*I trusted Victor. That was my mistake.*

I sat down.

*But the biggest mistake was believing I could fix everything alone.*

The letter continued.

*Teresa knows more than she will admit. She believes she is protecting you, but fear can turn people into strangers.*

I closed my eyes.

My father had known.

He knew.

*Connor, never let anyone convince you that love means ownership. A family protects each other. It does not control each other.*

I stopped reading.

Because those words felt like they had been written yesterday.

Not decades ago.

My father understood something I had only just learned.

Love without respect becomes control.

A sound came from behind me.

I turned.

My mother stood in the doorway.

She had seen the letter.

Her face was full of pain.

“Your father wrote that?””

I nodded.

She looked down.

“He always thought he understood me.””

I stared.

“Did he?””

A tear appeared in her eyes.

“He understood me better than I wanted.””

For a moment, I saw my mother differently.

Not as a monster.

Not as someone without feelings.

But as someone who had spent years making choices based on fear.

Then she said something that changed everything.

“I didn’t start this plan.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Victor came back to me.””

My body went still.

“He found me.””

“When?””

Around the time Frederick was born.

“Why?””

“He knew you had built something valuable.””

My mother looked at me.

“He knew I was the only person who could get close enough.””

The room went cold.

“You’re saying he used you?””

She looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

That answer surprised me.

Because it was the first time she admitted being wrong.

“What happened next?””

She swallowed.

“I thought I could control him.””

I almost laughed.

“You thought you could control someone who destroyed Dad?””

She nodded.

“I was wrong.””

Silence.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

“Connor.””

His voice was urgent.

“We found the final piece.””

“What?””

“The company records.””

I stood.

“What about them?””

“There’s proof your mother didn’t transfer your assets.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“She was trying to stop someone else from taking them.””

I froze.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Victor Hale.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked terrified.

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“Connor, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The documents your mother created weren’t meant to steal your company.””

I waited.

“They were meant to trap Victor.””

I stared at the woman standing in front of me.

The woman who had lied.

The woman who had hurt my wife.

The woman who had tried to control my life.

But maybe also the woman who had been fighting a battle she never told me about.

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.

“Connor, your mother wasn’t trying to take your future.””

A pause.

“She was trying to protect it.””

I looked at Teresa.

May you like

And for the first time, I had no idea if she was my enemy…

or the person who had been trying to save me all along.
