Amused

Chapter 5: The Test My Mother Was Waiting To Reveal

The paper shook in my hand.

Not because I was afraid of what it said.

Because I was afraid of why my mother had it.

The words at the top stared back at me.

*Paternity Test Results: Frederick Bradley.*

My son’s name.

My son.

The child I had held every night.

The child whose first steps I had been waiting for.

The child whose fever had kept me awake for countless nights.

My breathing became shallow.

I looked at Teresa.

She looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

“Why do you have this?””

Nobody spoke.

My mother’s lips parted.

Then closed.

That was the first time in my entire life that I saw her without an answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Mom.””

My voice was low.

“Why do you have a paternity test for my son?””

Amy covered her mouth.

“Connor…”

I looked at her.

Her eyes were full of fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

There was a difference.

I knew that now.

My mother noticed Amy’s reaction.

And she immediately reached for the weapon she always used.

Doubt.

“You should ask your wife why she’s so nervous.””

I felt anger rise.

“No.””

Teresa blinked.

“No?””

“No, Mom.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m not doing this your way anymore.””

Her face hardened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you don’t get to throw accusations into the room and let everyone else clean up the damage.””

The relatives who were still standing nearby became uncomfortable.

My aunt Betsy looked away.

Good.

They should feel uncomfortable.

They had watched my wife be humiliated.

Now they could watch the truth come out.

I looked at Richard.

“Did you know about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

My eyes moved back to Teresa.

“Then explain.””

My mother sat down slowly.

For a moment, she looked older.

Not weaker.

Just older.

“I found something concerning.””

“What?””

“Information.””

I stared.

“That’s not an answer.””

She sighed.

“Before Frederick was born, I heard rumors.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Rumors about what?””

She looked at Amy.

And there it was.

The same thing she had done all day.

Making my wife the target.

Amy took a step back.

“Teresa…”

My mother ignored her.

“People talk.””

“People?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Because there was no name.

No proof.

Just another story.

I looked at the paper again.

“Then why did you get a test?””

Teresa folded her hands.

“Because I wanted the truth.””

I laughed quietly.

The sound surprised everyone.

“The truth?””

“Yes.””

“You secretly tested my son.””

“I was protecting you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were investigating my family.””

Her expression changed.

“You don’t understand what a mother feels when she thinks her son is being lied to.””

I looked at Amy.

Then at Frederick sleeping peacefully nearby.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“You keep saying you’re protecting me.””

I stepped closer.

“But every time you say that, you hurt the people I love.””

The room went silent.

My mother looked away.

That tiny movement told me more than any confession.

She knew.

She knew what she had done.

But she still believed she had a right to do it.

I unfolded the paper.

“Is this real?””

Nobody answered.

“Richard?””

He took the document carefully.

He studied it.

After a moment, his face became serious.

“The laboratory appears legitimate.””

Amy’s eyes widened.

I looked at him.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning the document itself looks authentic.””

The room seemed to tilt.

My heart started pounding.

I looked at Amy.

She looked back at me.

And for one terrifying second, the world became silent.

Then Richard continued.

“But authenticity of the document does not explain why it exists.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

He pointed to the date.

“The test was done two months ago.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Two months ago?””

Frederick was ten months old then.

Why?

Why would my mother suddenly need this?

I looked at Teresa.

“You did this two months ago?””

She didn’t deny it.

My stomach twisted.

“Why?””

Her voice became defensive.

“Because I noticed things.””

“What things?””

“She was distant.””

Amy stared at her.

“I was exhausted because I had a newborn.””

My mother shook her head.

“You were secretive.””

“No.””

“You changed.””

Amy laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“I became a mother.””

That sentence hit harder than anything else.

My mother looked at her.

“You stopped prioritizing Connor.””

I felt anger explode.

“He is my husband.””

Amy’s voice cracked.

“I was trying to survive.””

She looked at Teresa.

“I was sleeping two hours a night. Frederick was sick. I was recovering. And you were telling me I wasn’t doing enough.””

Nobody spoke.

Amy wiped her eyes.

“I didn’t have time to make you feel important.””

My mother looked offended.

Like that was the greatest crime.

And suddenly I understood.

Teresa didn’t want a family.

She wanted a position.

She wanted to be the most important woman in my life forever.

Anyone who threatened that became an enemy.

Even my wife.

I looked down at the paternity test.

“Does it say anything?””

Richard looked at me.

“Connor…”

“Does it say I’m his father?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation nearly destroyed me.

Then he answered.

“The result confirms you are the biological father.””

The air left my lungs.

For a second, I couldn’t move.

I closed my eyes.

My son was mine.

Not that I had ever doubted him.

But the fact that my mother had planted that doubt inside my home made me sick.

I looked at Teresa.

“You knew?””

She looked confused.

“What?””

“You knew the result.””

She said nothing.

“You knew before today.””

Her silence confirmed it.

“Then why keep it?””

My mother looked down.

“I wanted you to see.””

“See what?””

“That you can’t ignore problems.””

I stared at her.

“You were waiting to use this against Amy.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice was louder.

“You weren’t protecting me. You were waiting for the perfect moment to make me question my wife.””

My mother stood.

“I was trying to open your eyes.””

I shook my head.

“My eyes were closed because I trusted you.””

That hurt her.

I saw it.

But I didn’t stop.

“You knew this would destroy her.””

“I thought she needed to answer questions.””

“She already answered them.””

“How?””

“Because she’s been standing beside me while you attacked her.””

My mother looked at Amy.

“You’re really going to let him talk to me this way?””

Amy looked at her.

And something changed.

The fear was gone.

“I spent a year hoping you would accept me.””

My mother froze.

“I tried.””

Amy’s voice became stronger.

“I cooked for you. I listened to your criticism. I apologized when I did nothing wrong.””

She swallowed.

“But I’m done begging someone to respect me.””

The room went silent.

I had never heard Amy speak to my mother like that.

Neither had Teresa.

Richard looked away.

Almost like he was giving Amy the moment she deserved.

My mother stared at her.

“You’re turning him against his family.””

Amy shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You did that yourself.””

My mother’s face changed.

For the first time, she had no response.

I picked up our bags.

“We’re leaving.””

Teresa looked at me.

“You’re really walking away from your mother?””

I stopped.

Then I turned.

“No.””

Her expression softened slightly.

Until I finished.

“I’m walking away from what you’ve become.””

The words stayed in the room.

My mother looked at the floor.

Nobody moved.

As Amy carried Frederick toward the door, my phone buzzed.

I thought it was another bank alert.

Another message.

Another piece of my mother’s hidden life.

But it wasn’t.

It was a text message from an unknown number.

One sentence.

One warning.

*“Connor, if you leave tonight, your mother will lose everything she has been hiding. But you need to know who helped her build the plan.””*

A second message appeared.

A name.

A name that made my blood turn cold.

May you like

*“The person who helped Teresa wasn’t Richard.””*

*“It was someone inside your own company.””*
