Amused

Chapter 7: The Brother Who Helped Build The Trap

I stared at the signature.

*Ethan Bradley.*

My younger brother.

For several seconds, I couldn’t process it.

The office around me disappeared.

The sound of phones ringing outside my door.

The footsteps in the hallway.

The voices of employees passing by.

Everything became distant.

Because there was one thought repeating in my head.

Not him.

Anyone else.

A stranger.

A business rival.

Someone who hated me.

I could understand that.

But Ethan?

My little brother?

The kid who used to sleep on my bedroom floor during thunderstorms because he was afraid of lightning.

The kid who followed me around the house asking questions about everything I did.

The kid I helped through college when my father lost his job.

That Ethan?

No.

Daniel watched my face carefully.

“Connor.””

I looked up.

“Tell me this is wrong.””

His expression was serious.

“I checked twice.””

I picked up the document.

The signature was clear.

The authorization form showed Ethan had approved access to certain financial records connected to my company.

My mother had used those records.

My mother had used my money.

And my brother had opened the door.

“Why?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

Neither did I.

I grabbed my phone.

My thumb hovered over Ethan’s name.

I wanted to call him.

I wanted him to explain.

I wanted him to laugh and tell me there was some mistake.

But something stopped me.

A feeling I hated.

Doubt.

The same doubt my mother had spent years creating.

I lowered the phone.

“Don’t contact him yet.””

Daniel nodded.

“I figured you’d say that.””

“You knew?””

He sighed.

“Connor, after what happened yesterday, I assumed this went deeper than Teresa.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel sat down.

“Your mother was never randomly involved in company matters.””

I frowned.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying she seemed to know things she shouldn’t know.””

I looked at the documents.

“She had help.””

Daniel nodded.

“And now we know who.””

My phone buzzed.

I thought it was another message.

It wasn’t.

It was Amy.

*Frederick’s fever is worse. The doctor wants us to come in.*

I immediately stood.

The investigation disappeared from my mind.

Because no matter what happened with my mother.

No matter who betrayed me.

My son came first.

“I have to go.””

Daniel nodded.

“I’ll secure everything here.””

I stopped at the door.

“Daniel?””

“Yeah?””

“Don’t trust anyone with access until we know the full picture.””

He understood.

“Not even Ethan.””

I looked away.

Because hearing my brother’s name said like that hurt more than I expected.

The pediatric clinic smelled like disinfectant and coffee.

The kind of smell every parent recognizes.

A place where people come because someone they love isn’t okay.

Amy sat beside Frederick while the doctor checked him.

I stood near the window.

Watching.

Thinking.

The doctor finally smiled.

“His fever is high, but we’re not seeing anything dangerous right now.””

Amy exhaled.

I saw the relief on her face.

The same relief I should have felt.

But my mind was somewhere else.

After the doctor left, Amy looked at me.

“You found something.””

I didn’t ask how she knew.

She always knew.

“What?””

She tilted her head.

“You have that look.””

“What look?””

“The one you get when you’re trying to fix everything alone.””

I sat beside her.

“I found out Ethan signed documents connected to my mother’s company plan.””

Her expression changed.

“Ethan?””

I nodded.

“No.””

The answer came from her before I even finished.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t believe it.””

I looked at her.

“You barely know him.””

“I know enough.””

“Amy.””

She looked at me seriously.

“Connor, your brother was the only person in your family who defended me.””

I paused.

“What?””

“After your mother criticized me, Ethan was the one who checked on me.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

“After Frederick was born.””

She looked down.

“He told me your mother was being unfair.””

My chest tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought it would make things worse.””

Again.

Those words.

I thought it would make things worse.

How many times had my wife stayed silent because my family made honesty feel dangerous?

Amy continued.

“He said he loved you, but he didn’t understand why your mother treated me that way.””

I looked at Frederick.

Sleeping peacefully.

My family had become a maze of secrets.

And I didn’t know which walls were real.

That evening, I called Ethan.

I didn’t accuse him.

I didn’t mention the documents.

I simply asked him to meet.

He agreed too quickly.

That worried me.

We met at a small coffee shop near downtown.

Ethan arrived ten minutes late.

He looked nervous.

That was the first thing I noticed.

My brother was usually confident.

Relaxed.

Always joking.

Not today.

He sat across from me.

“Connor.””

I studied him.

“When was the last time you talked to Mom?””

His face changed.

Not much.

But enough.

“Why?””

I leaned back.

“Just answer.””

He looked away.

“A few weeks ago.””

“About what?””

“Nothing important.””

I almost laughed.

“Nothing important.””

He looked at me.

“What is this?””

I placed the document on the table.

His expression changed instantly.

The color left his face.

“You weren’t supposed to see that.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Not:

“What is this?””

Not:

“I don’t know what that is.””

“You weren’t supposed to see that.””

I stared at him.

“Explain.””

Ethan looked around.

“Connor…”

“Explain.””

He lowered his voice.

“Mom said she needed help.””

“With what?””

“She said she was trying to protect you.””

My hands tightened.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I stared at him.

“You helped her access my company.””

“No.””

“You signed documents.””

“I signed something, but I didn’t know what she was planning.””

I leaned forward.

“Then what did you think it was?””

He looked down.

“A family trust.””

I laughed.

A bitter, exhausted laugh.

“Of course.””

“Connor, listen—”

“No.””

I stopped him.

“You need to listen.””

He went quiet.

“I spent my entire life protecting this family.””

Ethan looked hurt.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“I paid your tuition when Dad couldn’t.””

“I know.””

“I helped you get your first apartment.””

“I know.””

“I defended you when Mom criticized you.””

He looked down.

“Connor…”

“And now you helped her take control of my life.””

His eyes filled.

“I didn’t know.””

I wanted to believe him.

That was the worst part.

I wanted my little brother to be innocent.

But innocence didn’t erase damage.

“Why did Mom need company information?””

Ethan was silent.

Then he whispered:

“Because she was worried you were going to cut her off.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew after the birthday party, you would stop trusting her.””

My chest tightened.

“So this was planned.””

Ethan looked away.

“She had been planning for months.””

“How many months?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Since Frederick was born?””

His silence confirmed it.

My brother looked ashamed.

“I thought she was just scared.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She was building a backup plan.””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the table.

“What is that?””

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“The reason Mom was so desperate to control everything.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What’s inside?””

He looked at me.

“Proof that she didn’t just plan to take your money.””

A chill moved through me.

“What did she plan to take?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Your custody.””

The word hit me like a punch.

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“She believed Amy was unstable.””

I stared.

“She wanted to build a case.””

“For what?””

Ethan’s voice broke.

“To convince you that Frederick would be safer with her involved.””

I felt the room spin.

My mother.

My own mother.

Had been planning a way to insert herself between me and my son.

I grabbed the envelope.

My fingers shook as I opened it.

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Notes.

And one sentence written in my mother’s handwriting.

A sentence that made my blood run cold.

*“If Connor refuses to listen, we will make him choose between his wife and his child.””*

I looked at Ethan.

“Who is ‘we’?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because another page was underneath.

A meeting schedule.

A date.

A location.

And two names listed together.

*Teresa Bradley.*

*Emily Carter.*

My assistant.

My mother’s plan had never been just family.

It had reached into my company.

And now I knew the person who had been helping her from the inside.

But I still didn’t know why.

And when I saw the last line on the page, I understood something even worse.

Emily wasn’t helping my mother because she was being paid.

She was helping because my mother had something on her.

May you like

Something that could destroy her.

Something that involved me.
