Chapter 6: The Contract Hidden Before Birth
Thomas Carter stood outside the maternity ward like he belonged there.
That was the part I couldn’t understand.
Not the fact that he was there.
Not even the fact that he had somehow become connected to the nightmare surrounding Claire.
It was the confidence.
The way he stood with a folder in his hand and security officers surrounding him, yet he looked completely calm.
Like he wasn’t afraid of being exposed.
Like he believed he had already won.
Claire watched him from the conference room window.
Her face was pale.
“Ethan.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Don’t let him near me.””
I nodded immediately.
“I won’t.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t know what he’s capable of.””
The way she said it made my stomach tighten.
“Tell me.””
Claire looked at Thomas through the glass.
“He was always around when I was growing up.””
“Your uncle?””
She nodded.
“But he wasn’t family.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
She sat down slowly.
“When my parents disappeared, Margaret told me Thomas was the only person who could help us.””
“Us?””
“Me and her.””
I listened.
“She said he was protecting me.””
Claire laughed softly.
A painful sound.
“But every time he showed up, something else disappeared.””
“What?””
“My parents’ documents.””
My heart sank.
“Your research?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Every piece of evidence they left behind.””
I stared through the glass.
Thomas Carter.
The man who had been sitting at our family dinners.
The man who had shaken my hand.
The man who had asked Claire how she was feeling during pregnancy.
All while knowing what was happening.
“How did you never suspect him?””
Claire looked down.
“Because he acted like he cared.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it sounded familiar.
My mother had done the same thing.
She had wrapped control in the appearance of love.
Malcolm entered the room.
“We need to talk to Thomas.””
Claire immediately stood.
“No.””
Malcolm looked at her.
“He has information.””
“He has lies.””
“Probably.””
Malcolm glanced at the folder Thomas was holding through the window.
“But we need to know what’s inside.””
I looked at him.
“You think he’s telling the truth?””
“No.””
That answer surprised me.
“Then why listen?””
“Because people who believe they have power usually reveal more than they intend.””
Malcolm was right.
People like my mother.
People like Thomas.
They didn’t hide because they were scared.
They hid because they thought nobody could challenge them.
We entered the hallway.
Security stayed close.
Thomas smiled when he saw Claire.
That smile made my skin crawl.
“Claire.””
She stopped several feet away.
“Why are you here?””
Thomas looked at her stomach.
“I heard the baby is close.””
My hand tightened.
“You don’t get to talk about her child.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Ethan Carter.””
He smiled slightly.
“You have no idea what you married into.””
I stepped forward.
“And you have no idea who you’re threatening.””
Thomas laughed quietly.
“Actually, I know exactly who I’m threatening.””
He looked at Claire.
“That’s the problem.””
Claire’s voice was cold.
“What do you want?””
Thomas lifted the folder.
“To prevent a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
He opened the folder.
“The mistake of allowing a child with the Reed bloodline to be raised by someone who does not understand the responsibility.””
Everyone went silent.
Claire stared at him.
“I’m the mother.””
Thomas nodded.
“Biologically.””
The word made me angry.
“What does that mean?””
He ignored me.
“Claire, your entire life has been based on a false identity.””
She didn’t react.
“Keep talking.””
Thomas smiled.
“You think you are an ordinary woman.””
“I never said that.””
“You think you can walk away from everything.””
Claire stepped closer.
“I don’t want anything from your family.””
Thomas’s smile faded.
“That’s exactly why you are dangerous.””
Malcolm interrupted.
“Show us the document.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You know what this is?””
“I know what you are trying to do.””
Thomas opened the folder.
Inside was a contract.
Old.
Official.
Stamped.
My heart sank.
“What is it?””
Thomas looked at Claire.
“An inheritance protection agreement.””
Claire frowned.
“I never signed anything.””
“No.””
Thomas tapped the paper.
“Your parents did.””
Malcolm took the document.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What does it say?””
Malcolm didn’t answer immediately.
Claire grabbed the paper.
She read.
Then she froze.
“What is this?””
I moved beside her.
The words were complicated.
Legal language.
But one section stood out.
*Guardian authority transfer.*
My stomach dropped.
Claire looked at Thomas.
“This says my guardian has authority over my decisions.””
“Yes.””
“Until what age?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Claire looked again.
Her face changed.
“Thirty.””
Silence.
She laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“I’m thirty years old.””
Thomas nodded.
“And now you understand.””
I looked at him.
“Understand what?””
“That Margaret was not just raising Claire.””
He pointed at the document.
“She was managing her.””
Claire looked sick.
“My entire life…”
Thomas continued.
“Was legally controlled.””
I stepped between them.
“And the baby?””
Thomas looked at me.
“That is the next transfer.””
The hallway became silent.
Claire whispered:
“No.””
Thomas opened another page.
“According to the agreement, any child born from Claire’s bloodline falls under protected inheritance management.””
My anger exploded.
“You’re talking about a baby.””
“A future heir.””
“He is not property.””
Thomas smiled.
“That’s why you don’t understand.””
I moved toward him.
Security stepped in.
Not because they were protecting him.
Because they were stopping me.
Thomas continued calmly.
“The child’s financial interests must be protected.””
Claire stared at him.
“And who decides what protects him?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Everyone knew.
My mother.
Margaret.
Thomas.
All of them.
Later that evening, Malcolm brought the contract to his legal department.
Claire sat quietly in her room.
She hadn’t spoken much.
That scared me more than if she had been crying.
Claire was someone who fought.
Silence meant she was processing pain.
I sat beside her.
“I’m here.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Say something.””
She looked at me.
“What do you want me to say?””
“I don’t know.””
A small smile appeared.
“Neither do I.””
Then she looked toward the baby monitor.
“Our son hasn’t even been born.””
Her voice cracked.
“And everyone is already fighting over him.””
I reached for her hand.
“They’re not getting him.””
She looked at me.
“You promise?””
I didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.””
For the first time all day, she believed me.
Then the door opened.
Malcolm walked in.
He looked exhausted.
“I found something.””
I stood.
“What?””
He placed another document on the table.
“This contract is real.””
My heart sank.
“But?””
Malcolm looked at Claire.
“But the version Thomas showed us was incomplete.””
Claire frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“There is another page.””
He handed it over.
Claire read it.
Then her face lost all color.
“What?””
I took the page.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Not typed.
Not official.
A private instruction.
My eyes moved across the words.
And I felt the world stop.
Because the note wasn’t written by Margaret.
It wasn’t written by Thomas.
It wasn’t written by my mother.
It was written by Claire’s father.
And it said:
*If Claire ever discovers the truth, she must never trust the Carter family.*
I looked at Claire.
She looked back at me.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
I wondered if my family had been the only ones lying.
Because the final line on the page was even worse.
It named the person who had betrayed Claire first.
The person who had started everything.
May you like
And that person was not my mother.
It was someone Claire had spent her entire life trying to find.
