Amused

Chapter 4: The Birth Record That Changed Everything

The moment the security officer said someone was looking for my baby, every instinct in me changed.

I stopped thinking like a husband trying to understand a family secret.

I started thinking like a father.

I moved in front of Claire without even realizing it.

“Who is on the maternity floor?””

The officer touched his radio again.

“We’re confirming identity now.””

Malcolm stepped forward.

“Did the person give a name?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“Daniel Whitmore.””

Claire’s face went completely still.

I noticed immediately.

“Claire?””

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes were fixed on the floor.

Like she had just heard the name of someone she had spent years trying to forget.

“Who is Daniel Whitmore?””

Claire swallowed.

“He’s my father’s brother.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Malcolm.

“You know him?””

Malcolm’s expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“Yes.””

That answer scared me.

“Why?””

Malcolm slowly walked toward the window.

“Because Daniel Whitmore was one of the people involved in the investigation eighteen years ago.””

Claire’s voice shook.

“The investigation into my parents?””

Malcolm nodded.

“But he disappeared before anyone could question him.””

I stared at Claire.

“You told me your uncle died.””

She looked at me.

“I thought he did.””

The security officer interrupted.

“Mr. Reed.””

Everyone turned.

“The person claiming to be Daniel Whitmore is refusing to leave.””

Malcolm’s eyes narrowed.

“What does he want?””

The officer looked at Claire.

“He says he needs to speak with her.””

Claire tightened her grip on my hand.

“No.””

It was the first time I had heard fear in her voice.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Pure fear.

I leaned closer.

“Claire, what happened?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But I knew she was lying.

Not to hurt me.

To protect herself.

“Please.””

She looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw the woman who had stood alone against my mother.

The woman who had been slapped.

Accused.

Trapped.

And still refused to break.

But this was different.

This name reached somewhere deeper.

“He was there the night my parents disappeared.””

The words came quietly.

“What?””

Claire looked down.

“My father trusted him.””

“Daniel?””

She nodded.

“My dad believed Daniel was helping him expose something.””

“What?””

She looked at Malcolm.

“The hospital.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

The secret wasn’t just about my family.

It was about the institution itself.

Reed Memorial.

The place where Claire had come for safety.

The place where my mother had tried to destroy her.

Malcolm looked at the security officer.

“Bring him to the conference room.””

Claire immediately said:

“No.””

Malcolm turned.

“Claire?””

She shook her head.

“If he came here, he knows I’m here.””

I moved closer.

“Then he’s not getting near you.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My parents spent years trying to expose illegal medical records being altered.””

Malcolm went silent.

Claire continued.

“They discovered patients were being manipulated. Their records changed. Their legal rights questioned.””

My stomach tightened.

The same thing they were trying to do to her.

“Your mother knew?””

Claire nodded.

“She was connected to the people involved.””

I looked away.

Every memory of my childhood felt different.

Family dinners.

Holiday gatherings.

My mother’s perfect smile.

All of it.

“How did you find me?””

Claire looked at me.

“I wasn’t looking for you.””

That hurt.

But I needed the truth.

“I was looking for your family.””

She took a breath.

“I found information about your father.””

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I waited.

“Your father was one of the last people my parents contacted before they disappeared.””

The room went completely quiet.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Claire looked down.

“I didn’t know if he was involved.””

“Then why marry me?””

The question came out again.

But this time, it wasn’t anger.

It was pain.

Claire reached for my hand.

“Because I realized you weren’t them.””

I looked at her.

“You were the first person in that family who made me feel safe.””

My anger weakened.

Because I believed her.

That was the worst part.

Even after everything.

I believed her.

A knock interrupted us.

A security officer entered.

“Mr. Reed.””

Malcolm turned.

“Daniel Whitmore is in the conference room.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

“Did he bring anything?””

The officer nodded.

“A folder.””

“What kind of folder?””

The officer looked at Claire.

“Birth records.””

Claire’s face went pale.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She whispered:

“He knows.””

“Knows what?””

She didn’t answer.

Malcolm did.

“Ethan, we need to see what’s inside.””

The conference room felt colder than it should have.

Daniel Whitmore sat at the table.

He looked older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

The face of someone who had spent years running from something.

When he saw Claire, he stood.

“Claire.””

She didn’t move.

“You’re alive.””

The sentence confused me.

Claire stared at him.

“You thought I wasn’t?””

Daniel looked down.

“I thought your mother’s people had found you.””

The words made everyone freeze.

“My mother?””

Daniel looked at me.

“You’re Ethan.””

I stepped forward.

“Yes.””

He studied my face.

Then shook his head.

“You look exactly like Richard.””

My father.

Again.

Everyone kept bringing me back to him.

“What happened eighteen years ago?””

Daniel sat slowly.

“You deserve to know.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old.

Yellowed.

Official.

He pushed one toward Claire.

“This is your original birth certificate.””

She looked at it.

Then froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“What?””

Her fingers trembled.

“My last name.””

I looked.

The name printed on the document wasn’t Whitmore.

It wasn’t Carter.

It was Reed.

My blood ran cold.

Claire looked at Malcolm.

“Why does it say Reed?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Because Claire was never supposed to disappear.””

Malcolm stared at the paper.

“This cannot be real.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew there were missing records.””

Malcolm didn’t deny it.

Claire looked between them.

“Someone changed my identity?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He looked directly at me.

Then said:

“Your mother.””

The room exploded into silence.

I felt like the ground disappeared.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“Evelyn Carter discovered what your parents knew.””

“What did they know?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“That Claire’s birth was connected to the founding agreement of Reed Memorial.””

Malcolm stepped back.

“That agreement was private.””

Daniel nodded.

“It was supposed to stay buried.””

Claire stared at the birth record.

“So my parents weren’t killed because they investigated the hospital.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

A pause.

“They were killed because they discovered who you really were.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Claire whispered:

“Who am I?””

Daniel looked at Malcolm.

Then at the document.

Then finally at Claire.

“You are the last surviving heir to Reed Memorial.””

Nobody moved.

The words didn’t feel real.

Claire looked at me.

I saw the same confusion I felt.

The same fear.

The same question.

If Claire was the true heir…

Why had my mother spent years trying to erase her?

Daniel slowly closed the folder.

But before he could explain, Malcolm’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed within seconds.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

“What happened?””

Malcolm lowered the phone.

His face had gone pale.

“The custody petition was just submitted to the court.””

I stood.

“By who?””

Malcolm looked at Claire.

Then at me.

“It wasn’t Evelyn Carter.””

A chill went through me.

“Then who?””

He held up the phone.

The name on the screen made Claire gasp.

Because the person who filed for custody of our unborn child…

was Claire’s own legal guardian.

The woman who had raised her after her parents disappeared.

The woman Claire had trusted her entire life.

May you like

And according to the court records…

she had been waiting eighteen years to take everything that belonged to Claire.
