Chapter 5: The Guardian Who Betrayed Her
The name on the court petition didn’t belong to my mother.
It didn’t belong to my father.
It belonged to the woman Claire had spent half her life calling family.
Margaret Whitmore.
Claire’s guardian.
The woman who had taken her in after her parents disappeared.
The woman who had comforted her through nightmares.
The woman who had told her, year after year, that she was lucky to have survived.
And now that same woman was trying to take Claire’s child before he was even born.
For several seconds, Claire didn’t move.
She just stared at the document in Malcolm’s hand.
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
Almost like she was trying to convince herself.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Malcolm looked at her carefully.
“Claire…”
“She wouldn’t.””
Her eyes filled.
“She raised me.””
Daniel Whitmore looked away.
That reaction told me something.
He wasn’t surprised.
Claire noticed.
“You knew.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“You knew Margaret was involved?””
Daniel slowly nodded.
Claire stepped back.
The pain on her face was worse than anger.
“Everyone knew except me.””
I moved toward her.
“Claire.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I spent years thinking I had no family.””
Her voice cracked.
“And the whole time, everyone around me knew the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Because there was no defense.
Not for that.
Not for eighteen years of lies.
Malcolm took the petition and placed it on the table.
“We need to understand exactly what Margaret filed.””
He opened the document.
I stood beside Claire as we read.
The accusations were unbelievable.
Claire was described as emotionally unstable.
Unable to make responsible decisions.
A person suffering from unresolved trauma.
I felt anger rising in my chest.
The same language.
The same strategy.
Different person.
They were all using the same story.
“She’s copying the hospital file.””
Claire whispered.
Malcolm nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at the pages.
“Margaret always planned ahead.””
Claire looked at him.
“You knew her?””
Daniel sighed.
“She worked with your parents.””
“How?””
Daniel leaned back.
“Your father and mother discovered that certain families were using Reed Memorial’s legal system to control patient decisions.””
Malcolm’s expression darkened.
“They weren’t just changing medical records.””
Daniel nodded.
“They were changing ownership.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Malcolm.
“Ownership of what?””
Daniel answered.
“People’s assets.””
The words sounded impossible.
But somehow, after everything I had seen, they made sense.
He continued.
“When someone was declared mentally incapable, their financial decisions could be transferred.””
Claire’s eyes widened.
“So they were stealing from patients.””
“Yes.””
“And my parents found out.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the documents.
“Then why would Margaret want custody of Claire?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Claire is not just a person.””
I hated the way he said it.
Like my wife was a piece of property.
“She is connected to the Reed estate.””
Malcolm’s face tightened.
“The original inheritance agreement.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
I looked at Claire.
She looked overwhelmed.
“I don’t care about any inheritance.””
“I know.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“But they do.””
A few hours later, Malcolm arranged for a private legal team to review everything.
Claire refused to leave the hospital room.
Not because she was weak.
Because she was exhausted.
She sat near the window, looking at Atlanta below.
I stood beside her.
“You should sleep.””
She didn’t look at me.
“I don’t think I can.””
I understood.
How could anyone sleep after discovering their entire life was built on lies?
“I’m sorry.””
She turned.
“Why do you keep saying that?””
“Because my family did this.””
Claire looked at me for a long moment.
Then she said:
“Your family did.””
A pause.
“But you didn’t.””
Those words hurt more than anger.
Because they reminded me that she still trusted me.
And I wasn’t sure I deserved it.
“I should have listened to you.””
“Yes.””
Her answer was immediate.
I looked down.
“I know.””
She sighed.
“I wasn’t asking you to hate your mother.””
“I know.””
“I was asking you to believe me.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
The silence between us was heavy.
Then Claire reached for my hand.
“But you’re here now.””
I looked at her.
And for the first time that night, I felt like I had something to fight for.
Not my family’s reputation.
Not my inheritance.
Her.
And our baby.
The next morning, Malcolm called us into his office.
His expression was serious.
That usually meant bad news.
“What happened?””
He placed several folders on the desk.
“The court accepted Margaret’s petition temporarily.””
Claire froze.
“What?””
“Because of the medical concerns submitted by Dr. Pierce.””
I felt anger rise.
“He lied.””
Malcolm nodded.
“We know.””
“Then why does the court believe him?””
“Because legally, paperwork matters before truth does.””
That sentence made me sick.
A lie written professionally could hurt someone more than the truth spoken emotionally.
Claire looked at the folders.
“What happens now?””
Malcolm hesitated.
“They can request an emergency evaluation.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Psychiatric evaluation?””
“Yes.””
The same plan.
Again.
Declare her unstable.
Take control.
Separate her from the baby.
I clenched my fists.
“Who approved this?””
Malcolm looked at me.
“The judge assigned to the case.””
“Who is the judge?””
Malcolm hesitated.
That hesitation bothered me.
“Malcolm.””
He looked down.
“The judge is Rebecca Carter.””
My stomach dropped.
“Carter?””
Claire looked at me.
“Your family?””
Malcolm nodded.
“My mother’s sister.””
I couldn’t believe it.
Another connection.
Another person.
Another piece of the same machine.
Claire whispered:
“They surrounded me.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“They surrounded me.””
She pointed at the folders.
“Your mother. The doctor. The judge. Margaret.””
Her voice shook.
“Everyone had a role.””
And she was right.
This wasn’t one person making a mistake.
It was a system.
A plan.
A trap.
Then Malcolm’s assistant rushed into the office.
“Mr. Reed.””
Everyone turned.
“What happened?””
She held a tablet.
“The hospital cameras from yesterday were reviewed.””
Malcolm stood.
“And?””
The assistant looked at Claire.
“There is footage of Evelyn Carter entering the maternity floor three hours before the incident.””
Claire frowned.
“Three hours?””
“Yes.””
I looked confused.
“Why does that matter?””
The assistant swallowed.
“Because she wasn’t alone.””
Malcolm took the tablet.
He watched the footage.
His expression changed.
Then he handed it to me.
I pressed play.
The camera showed my mother walking through the hallway.
Beside her was Dr. Pierce.
But behind them…
was another person.
Someone wearing a hospital employee badge.
Someone carrying a folder.
The camera zoomed in.
And my blood turned cold.
Because I recognized him.
He was the man who had attended my mother’s family dinners for years.
The man who always smiled.
The man who claimed he was only a family friend.
My uncle.
I looked at Malcolm.
“Who is he?””
Malcolm’s face became unreadable.
“Ethan…”
“Who is he?””
Malcolm finally answered.
“His name is Thomas Carter.””
I stared at the screen.
Another Carter.
Another secret.
Another person connected to my mother.
Then the assistant spoke again.
“There’s more.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“The footage shows Thomas giving Dr. Pierce something before entering Claire’s room.””
“What?””
“A folder.””
Malcolm narrowed his eyes.
“Do we know what was inside?””
The assistant shook her head.
“Not yet.””
Claire slowly stood.
Her hand moved to her stomach.
“Find out.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice was quiet.
But stronger than ever.
“Because whatever was inside that folder…”
She looked at the screen.
“…is the reason they were so sure they could take my baby.””
At that moment, Malcolm’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?””
A pause.
Then his face went pale.
He looked at Claire.
“Security found Thomas Carter.””
I stepped forward.
“Where?””
Malcolm lowered the phone.
“He’s not running.””
“Then where is he?””
Malcolm looked toward the hospital hallway.
“He’s in the maternity ward.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Malcolm’s voice dropped.
“Because he’s requesting to see the baby.””
Claire’s face went cold.
“The baby isn’t even born.””
Malcolm nodded.
“I know.””
A silence followed.
May you like
Then he said:
“But Thomas claims he has proof that the baby legally belongs to someone else.””
