Chapter 2: The File Hidden Behind the Door
I found out what happened from Malcolm Reed himself.
Not from my mother.
Not from Dr. Pierce.
Not from the hospital.
From the man who called me at 7:43 that evening and said six words I will never forget.
“Ethan, come to the hospital now.””
I knew something was wrong the second I heard his voice.
Malcolm had known me since I was a child.
He was the uncle who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who gave Claire his blessing when I proposed.
He was not someone who sounded nervous.
But that night, he sounded shaken.
When I arrived at Reed Memorial, two security officers were standing outside Claire’s room.
My heart dropped.
I ran past them.
“Claire!””
She turned.
For a second, she looked relieved.
Then I saw the bruise forming on her cheek.
Everything inside me went cold.
I walked toward her slowly.
“Who did this?””
Claire looked at me.
She didn’t cry.
That somehow made it worse.
“Your mother.””
I closed my eyes.
Because somewhere deep down, I already knew.
But hearing it out loud was different.
Malcolm stood near the window, holding a folder.
“Ethan, you need to see something.””
I looked at Claire.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“The baby is okay.””
Those words broke me.
She was comforting me after being attacked.
I sat beside her.
“I’m sorry.””
Claire looked away.
“I needed you there.””
“I know.””
“No, Ethan.””
Her voice cracked slightly.
“You don’t know.””
The room went silent.
She touched her stomach.
“I was lying in that room, pregnant with your child, and two people were trying to convince everyone I couldn’t make decisions for myself.””
I had no answer.
Because she was right.
Malcolm placed the folder on the table.
“This was found in Dr. Pierce’s restricted archive.””
I opened it.
The first page was a medical assessment.
Claire Carter.
Patient status: High emotional instability.
Recommended action: Temporary psychiatric evaluation.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Malcolm’s jaw tightened.
“A setup.””
Claire nodded.
“They wanted a record saying I was unstable.””
I flipped through more pages.
There were notes.
Private conversations.
Recommendations.
And then I saw the date.
Three weeks earlier.
Before Claire was even admitted.
“They planned this before today?””
Malcolm didn’t answer immediately.
He didn’t need to.
The evidence was there.
My mother hadn’t lost control.
She had planned everything.
I found another document.
Custody Agreement Proposal.
My hands started shaking.
The names were listed clearly.
Primary guardian request:
Evelyn Carter.
I couldn’t breathe.
My mother wasn’t trying to help.
She wasn’t worried about Claire.
She wanted our baby.
At that moment, my phone rang.
The screen showed my mother’s name.
Everyone in the room looked at me.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice came through calmly.
“Ethan, you need to come home.””
I laughed.
A bitter sound.
“After what you did?””
“Don’t be dramatic.””
“Dramatic?””
I looked at Claire.
“My wife is in the hospital because of you.””
My mother lowered her voice.
“You don’t understand what Claire is doing.””
“What does that mean?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“She’s manipulating you.””
Claire’s face changed.
Malcolm stepped closer.
I held the phone tighter.
“You attacked my pregnant wife.””
“That is not what happened.””
“I saw the file.””
Silence.
For the first time, my mother had no immediate answer.
Then she whispered:
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
My blood ran cold.
Because that sentence meant one thing.
The plan was bigger than we thought.
And before I could respond, another notification appeared on my phone.
A message from the hospital security system.
A new file had been accessed.
The person who opened it was not Dr. Pierce.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been inside Claire’s room before the attack.
Someone whose name made Malcolm turn pale.
May you like
Because it was the one person we never expected.
My father.
