Amused

Chapter 9: The Betrayal Came From Inside My Father's Company

My father read the name twice.

Then he slowly removed his glasses.

"That's impossible.""

I looked at him.

"Who is it?""

He didn't answer.

He turned the page and checked the signature.

Then he opened another file on his laptop.

I had never seen my father look so unsettled.

"Sarah, I need to make a call.""

"Who?""

"David Mercer.""

The name meant nothing to me at first.

Then I remembered.

David had been my father's closest business associate for almost two decades.

He had been present at my mother's funeral.

He had attended my wedding.

He had given a speech about how happy he was that I had found someone who loved me.

He had once told me that if I ever needed help, I could call him.

I had known him since I was a teenager.

"David recommended Daniel's company?""

Dad nodded.

"He personally sponsored the initial referral.""

I frowned.

"Why would he do that?""

"That's what I'm about to ask.""

Dad called him.

The phone rang four times.

Then a familiar voice answered.

"Richard. Merry Christmas.""

Dad didn't return the greeting.

"David, I need to ask you about Harrington Development Group.""

There was a pause.

"What about them?""

"You sponsored their investment proposal.""

"Yes. Thomas approached me through a mutual contact.""

"Did you know Daniel Harrington was operating Northbridge Capital Partners?""

Another pause.

"I was aware of the company.""

"Did you know my daughter's identity was being used in its financing documents?""

Silence.

Then David said:

"Richard, I think we should discuss this in person.""

Dad's expression hardened.

"Why?""

"Because this is sensitive.""

"Did you know?""

David exhaled.

"Not initially.""

"That's not an answer.""

"Richard, I have been trying to manage a complicated situation.""

Dad ended the call.

I stared at him.

"Did he just admit he knew?""

"Not directly.""

"Do you trust him?""

Dad looked at the screen.

"I did.""

Those three words frightened me more than anything else.

Because if David had been involved, this wasn't just a family deception.

It was a betrayal inside the company my father had spent decades building.

At 10:15 a.m., Dad called an emergency meeting with his general counsel and two senior executives.

Victoria joined remotely.

I sat in the corner of the study, listening.

The first question concerned the original referral.

David Mercer had introduced Thomas Harrington to Bennett Global Holdings approximately six months earlier.

He had described Harrington Development Group as a financially stable regional developer with strong property assets.

He had also personally recommended that the company receive priority consideration.

One of the executives, Peter Collins, opened the internal review.

"David's referral allowed the proposal to move directly to the preliminary investment committee.""

Dad frowned.

"Was that permitted?""

"Yes, but the referral sponsor was required to disclose any financial relationship with the applicant.""

"Did he?""

Peter checked the records.

"No.""

Dad looked at Victoria.

"Find out whether he had any relationship with Thomas Harrington.""

Victoria nodded.

Then Peter opened another file.

"There's another issue. David accessed the Northbridge supporting documents several times after the initial review.""

I looked up.

"Why?""

Peter shook his head.

"We don't know.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Did he download anything?""

"Yes. Several documents.""

"What documents?""

Peter read the list.

"Corporate ownership records. Financial projections. And the personal guarantee.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Did he see my name?""

Peter nodded.

"Yes.""

Dad became completely still.

"How long ago?""

"Three weeks ago.""

I stared at him.

Three weeks.

That was when the fake ownership declaration had been filed.

My father looked at Peter.

"Did David contact anyone at Northbridge after accessing those documents?""

Peter opened another screen.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

"Daniel Harrington.""

Silence filled the room.

I looked at my father.

"David knew Daniel?""

Dad nodded slowly.

"Apparently.""

Victoria spoke.

"We need to establish whether David merely accessed the documents or actively participated in the arrangement.""

Dad looked at her.

"Then establish it.""

At noon, David arrived at Bennett Global Holdings' Chicago office.

Dad had asked him to attend a meeting.

He agreed.

Before leaving, Dad turned toward me.

"Sarah, I want you to stay here.""

I nodded.

"Okay.""

But I couldn't stop thinking about what Daniel had said.

If I tell you who helped us, this becomes much bigger than the Harrington family.

What had David done?

And why?

My father returned nearly two hours later.

He looked exhausted.

I stood immediately.

"What happened?""

Dad placed his briefcase on the table.

"David admitted that he introduced Thomas to the company.""

"That's all?""

"No.""

He sat down.

"He also admitted receiving money from a company associated with Northbridge.""

My stomach tightened.

"How much?""

"One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

I covered my mouth.

"Why?""

"He claims it was a legitimate consulting fee for introducing potential investors.""

"Did he disclose it?""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"So he was being paid by the Harringtons while recommending their company to yours?""

"That's what the preliminary evidence suggests.""

I sat down.

Dad continued.

"He also admitted speaking with Daniel about the financing documents.""

"What did he say?""

"That Daniel wanted to avoid delays caused by the guarantee verification process.""

I stared at him.

"Did David help him?""

Dad looked away.

"He claims he only explained the bank's requirements.""

"Did he know I hadn't agreed?""

"That's what we're investigating.""

I felt tears rise.

"Why would he do this to you?""

Dad remained quiet.

Then he said something that surprised me.

"Because people sometimes convince themselves that they deserve a reward for being close to someone successful.""

I looked at him.

"Was he trying to steal from you?""

"Possibly. But I won't accuse him until we have the evidence.""

He picked up his phone.

"He's been placed on administrative leave while the internal investigation continues. His access to company systems has been suspended.""

I nodded.

Then my father added:

"There's something else.""

I looked at him.

"David wasn't the only person who contacted Daniel.""

"Who else?""

Dad opened a document.

It contained a series of emails between David and Thomas Harrington.

One message had been sent two weeks before Christmas.

The subject line read:

*Family Situation — Keep Sarah Quiet.*

I felt my stomach turn.

Dad opened it.

David had written:

"Richard remains unaware of the full structure. Daniel assures me Sarah will not interfere. Keep the family relationship stable until the financing closes. Once the funds are released, we can discuss the longer-term arrangement.""

I read it twice.

Then I looked at my father.

"They were talking about me.""

Dad nodded.

"They were discussing how to keep you from asking questions.""

I felt something inside me go cold.

It wasn't simply that Daniel had lied.

It wasn't simply that Linda had humiliated me.

There had been people discussing my silence as though it were a business requirement.

My father closed the document.

"Sarah, I'm sorry.""

I shook my head.

"You didn't do this.""

"But I trusted him.""

"So did I.""

Dad reached across the desk.

"Then neither of us should blame ourselves for someone else's dishonesty.""

At 3:30 p.m., Rebecca called.

She had prepared the initial divorce filing and wanted to review it with me.

I agreed.

We sat in the study while she explained the process.

She discussed temporary parenting arrangements, financial disclosure, preservation of assets, and the possibility of requesting restrictions on certain financial transactions involving our joint property.

I listened carefully.

When she finished, she asked:

"Are you certain you want to proceed?""

I looked at the papers.

My full name appeared at the top.

Sarah Bennett Harrington.

For years, I had believed the name Harrington represented the family I had chosen.

Now it represented the people who had used my trust against me.

I picked up the pen.

"Yes.""

I signed.

My hand trembled slightly.

But I didn't stop.

Rebecca gathered the papers.

"We'll file this through the appropriate court process.""

I nodded.

Then I asked:

"Can I request that Emma's school and medical information remain private?""

"Yes. We can address privacy and communication arrangements in the parenting documents.""

"Good.""

I wanted Emma to have as normal a childhood as possible.

I didn't want her name dragged into business disputes.

I didn't want her photograph appearing in anyone's social media posts.

And I didn't want Linda using her as a weapon.

At 5:45 p.m., Daniel arrived again.

This time, he wasn't carrying flowers.

He looked angry.

Security informed us he wanted to speak with me.

I agreed to see him briefly, with Rebecca present.

He entered the study and looked at the divorce papers on the desk.

"You're serious.""

"Yes.""

He shook his head.

"Sarah, this is insane.""

I didn't answer.

"You're going to destroy our family over something that can be fixed.""

I looked at him.

"Can you fix the fact that you used my identity?""

"We can work with the bank.""

"Can you fix the fact that you lied to me?""

"I've already apologized.""

"Can you fix the fact that your mother slapped me?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Mom is willing to apologize properly.""

I stared at him.

"She already had an opportunity.""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Sarah, Dad is under enormous pressure. David is blaming us for everything.""

I frowned.

"David?""

"He's trying to protect himself.""

I looked at Rebecca.

She remained silent.

Daniel continued.

"David introduced the company. He knew about the financing structure. He was involved from the beginning.""

"Did he know my name was being used?""

Daniel looked down.

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Then why did he help you?""

"Because he wanted a share of the investment.""

I stared at him.

"How much?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Five percent.""

I almost couldn't breathe.

"Five percent of what?""

"The financing proceeds.""

My father, who had been standing near the window, turned around.

"How much did you promise him?""

Daniel looked toward him.

"Richard, this is a private conversation.""

Dad stepped closer.

"You brought my daughter into a financial arrangement involving millions of dollars. There is nothing private about it anymore.""

Daniel swallowed.

"David wanted a percentage for introducing the opportunity.""

Dad's voice became colder.

"And you agreed?""

Daniel nodded.

I looked at him.

"Did Linda know?""

"She knew David was involved.""

"Did Melissa?""

"I don't know.""

I shook my head.

"Do you understand what you've done?""

Daniel suddenly became emotional.

"I was trying to save everything!""

"Everything for whom?""

"My family!""

"Your family was sitting at your mother's Christmas table. Your daughter was crying. Your wife was being assaulted. And you were worried about an investment.""

He lowered his head.

Then he whispered:

"I didn't know Mom would hit you.""

I looked at him.

"But you knew she might insult me.""

He didn't answer.

"You knew she was going to say something about my background. You knew she might humiliate me. And you still told me to stay quiet.""

Daniel looked up.

"Because if you argued with her, she'd start asking questions.""

My heart stopped.

"What questions?""

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, I thought he wouldn't answer.

Then he said:

"She had started suspecting that your father was connected to Bennett Global Holdings. She wanted to know whether you had any influence over the investment.""

I stared at him.

"She knew?""

"She suspected.""

"And she still treated me that way?""

Daniel looked away.

"She thought you were exaggerating your family's position.""

I felt a bitter laugh escape me.

"So she believed I was lying about my own father.""

"She didn't know the full truth.""

"And neither did you, apparently.""

He stepped forward.

"Sarah, please. I can explain everything if you'll come home.""

I looked at him.

"Home?""

"Our house.""

"The house where you kept financial documents I never saw?""

He said nothing.

"The house where my identity was used to secure money I never borrowed?""

He lowered his head.

"Sarah—"

"The house where your mother could walk in whenever she wanted and insult me?""

He closed his eyes.

I shook my head.

"I don't want to go back.""

Daniel looked toward my father.

Then he said something that made the room go silent.

"There's one more thing you should know about Linda.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He hesitated.

"She wasn't just angry at you because she thought you came from the wrong background.""

"Then why?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because she found out something about your mother.""

My chest tightened.

"My mother?""

He nodded.

"She discovered that your mother had been involved in a business dispute with Thomas Harrington years ago.""

I stared at him.

"My mother died thirteen years ago. She never knew Thomas.""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"That's what I thought, too.""

My father suddenly stepped forward.

"Daniel, what exactly did Linda find?""

Daniel looked at him.

Then he answered:

"She found an old agreement bearing your mother's signature. And she believes your mother had a claim against Harrington Development Group that was never settled.""

I felt the room tilt.

My mother had died when I was nineteen.

She had never told me about any dispute with the Harringtons.

I looked at my father.

He had gone completely pale.

"Richard?"" I whispered.

He didn't answer.

Instead, he walked to the cabinet, opened a locked drawer, and removed a thick brown envelope.

He placed it on the desk.

I recognized my mother's handwriting immediately.

My father's fingers trembled slightly as he opened it.

Inside was a letter dated thirteen years earlier.

He read the first few lines.

Then he looked at me.

"Sarah, there's something about your mother's death that I never told you.""

My heart began pounding.

"What?""

He looked down at the letter.

Then he said:

"Your mother had discovered that Thomas Harrington was involved in something that could have destroyed his company.""

I stared at him.

"And Linda knows?""

Dad nodded slowly.

"Apparently.""

He turned the letter toward me.

At the bottom was a handwritten sentence from my mother.

*If anything happens to me, make sure Sarah never has to deal with the Harrington family.*

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Because suddenly, Christmas dinner wasn't the beginning of this nightmare.

May you like

It might have been the continuation of something that had started thirteen years earlier.

And my mother had left behind evidence that someone had desperately wanted buried.
