Chapter 4: The Secret Hidden Behind My Husband's Name
The woman on the phone repeated Daniel's name.
Then she said something that made my father close his eyes.
"Mr. Bennett, the compliance team found that Daniel Harrington is listed as a beneficial owner of a separate company that submitted supporting financial documents to Harrington Development Group.""
Dad looked at me.
"What company?""
"Northbridge Capital Partners.""
I frowned.
I had never heard that name before.
Dad asked, "And what is Daniel's role?""
"According to the corporate filing, he's the managing member. The company was incorporated approximately eighteen months ago.""
I stared at my father.
"Daniel owns a company?""
Dad didn't answer immediately.
The woman continued.
"There's another concern. Northbridge received payments from Harrington Development Group that were described as consulting fees. However, the services provided have not been adequately documented.""
My father gripped his phone.
"How much money?""
"Approximately six hundred and twenty thousand dollars over eighteen months.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Six hundred and twenty thousand dollars.
Daniel had never mentioned owning an investment company.
He had never mentioned receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from his father's business.
He had told me we needed to be careful with money when I wanted to replace my aging car.
He had complained about the cost of Emma's preschool.
And when I suggested taking a family vacation to Florida, he had said we couldn't afford unnecessary luxuries.
Yet he had apparently been receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars through a company I knew nothing about.
"Is this illegal?"" I asked.
The woman heard me.
"Mrs. Harrington, we cannot make that determination. Our review has identified inconsistencies that require further investigation.""
Dad interrupted.
"Send everything to our general counsel. Nobody contacts the Harrington family until we've secured the records.""
"Understood, Mr. Bennett.""
He ended the call.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.
"How long have you known?""
Dad looked genuinely uncomfortable.
"About the investment proposal? Six months. About Northbridge? I found out tonight.""
"Did you know Daniel was involved?""
"Not until the compliance team called.""
I looked out at the snow falling beyond the hospital entrance.
I had spent five years sleeping beside a man who apparently had an entire financial life I knew nothing about.
"Did he use my name?""
Dad hesitated.
"That's what we need to establish.""
I turned toward him.
"What does that mean?""
He opened the passenger door but didn't get inside.
"Sarah, the company filings contain an address that appears to be connected to your former residential records.""
My stomach tightened.
"What address?""
"An apartment you and Daniel rented before Emma was born.""
I remembered the apartment.
It was a small two-bedroom place in Chicago where Daniel and I had lived during our first year of marriage.
I had signed several documents when we moved out.
Daniel had handled most of the paperwork.
"What would he need that address for?""
"I don't know yet.""
My father looked directly at me.
"But we're going to find out.""
We arrived at my father's house shortly after ten.
It was a large but understated property in Winnetka, surrounded by tall trees and a stone driveway.
I had grown up there.
After my mother's death, it had become the one place where I never needed to pretend everything was fine.
Dad had arranged for a guest bedroom to be prepared.
Emma was carried upstairs by our housekeeper, Maria, who had worked for my father for nearly twenty years.
I followed slowly.
My side hurt whenever I moved.
After Emma was settled, I went downstairs.
Dad was standing in his study, speaking to someone on the phone.
He wore his reading glasses and had several documents spread across his desk.
"Yes, I want an independent review. No assumptions. Verify every signature, every payment, every beneficial owner.""
He paused.
"And I want the original documents preserved.""
He ended the call.
I stood in the doorway.
"You're working on Christmas night.""
He looked up.
"I'm protecting my daughter.""
I sat in the chair opposite his desk.
"Dad, I need you to tell me something.""
"Anything.""
"If Daniel really has been hiding money, could he have done it without me knowing?""
Dad leaned back.
"Financial deception within a marriage can happen in several ways. But we shouldn't assume anything until we see the records.""
I nodded.
Then I remembered something.
"About a year ago, Daniel asked me to sign some documents.""
Dad became attentive.
"What documents?""
"He said they were related to refinancing our house. There were several pages. He told me they were routine.""
"Did you read them?""
"Some of them. I was working on a client presentation, and he said the bank needed them before the end of the week.""
Dad didn't interrupt.
"I remember signing something about financial authorization. He said it was connected to our joint accounts.""
"Do you have copies?""
"I don't know.""
Dad picked up his phone.
"Then we'll request them.""
I looked at him.
"Do you think he used my signature?""
"I don't know, Sarah.""
He reached across the desk and took my hand.
"But if he did, it won't be your fault.""
I looked down.
For five years, Daniel had made me feel foolish whenever I questioned his decisions.
He handled our finances because he said he was better with numbers.
He managed our mortgage payments.
He handled the insurance renewals.
He insisted that combining everything into one financial system would make our marriage easier.
I had trusted him.
Now I wondered whether he had mistaken my trust for permission.
My phone vibrated.
Daniel.
I ignored it.
Then another message arrived.
*Daniel:* Sarah, I know you're angry, but we need to talk about Northbridge.
I stared at the screen.
A second message followed.
*Daniel:* Please don't let your father investigate something he doesn't understand.
My hands went cold.
I hadn't told Daniel that Northbridge had been discovered.
I hadn't even mentioned the company's name.
I showed my father.
He read the messages carefully.
"Did you tell him anything about the call?""
"No.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"Then someone is communicating with him.""
He placed my phone on the desk.
"Don't respond yet.""
A third message arrived.
*Daniel:* The company has nothing to do with our marriage. I can explain everything.
I looked at Dad.
"He knows.""
"Yes.""
"How?""
Dad didn't answer.
Instead, he called his chief financial officer.
A man named Peter Collins answered almost immediately.
"Richard?""
"Peter, I need you to tell me whether anyone from Harrington Development Group has contacted our investment team tonight.""
Peter hesitated.
"Actually, yes.""
"Who?""
"Thomas called about twenty minutes ago. He wanted to know whether the committee had discovered anything concerning Daniel's company.""
Dad looked at me.
"Did you tell him anything?""
"No. I told him the review was confidential.""
"Good.""
Peter continued.
"Richard, there's something else. Thomas seemed particularly concerned about a document submitted last month.""
"What document?""
"A personal guarantee.""
Dad straightened.
"Whose guarantee?""
Peter paused.
"Sarah Bennett Harrington's.""
I stood so quickly that the chair scraped against the floor.
"What?""
Dad raised one hand, asking me to wait.
"Peter, send me a copy immediately. Do not alter or process anything further.""
He ended the call.
I stared at him.
"Why would my name be on a personal guarantee?""
"We're going to find out.""
My phone rang.
This time it was Daniel's father.
Thomas Harrington.
Dad answered and put the call on speaker.
"Richard, we need to resolve this tonight.""
Dad's voice remained neutral.
"Good evening, Thomas.""
"Daniel tells me Sarah is with you.""
"She is.""
"I want to speak with her.""
"She doesn't want to speak with you.""
Thomas sighed.
"Richard, I understand you're upset. But the situation has become unnecessarily complicated.""
Dad leaned forward.
"Your wife struck my daughter. Your son blamed her. Your granddaughter watched the entire thing.""
"I know.""
"Then what exactly do you want to discuss?""
Thomas lowered his voice.
"The Northbridge issue.""
Dad didn't react.
"What about it?""
"Daniel made some administrative arrangements. There may be paperwork that needs correcting.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Dad's eyes met mine.
"Paperwork involving my daughter?""
Thomas went silent.
Then he said:
"Richard, I think you should understand that Sarah signed certain documents voluntarily.""
I gripped the armrest.
"What documents?"" I whispered.
Dad kept his eyes on Thomas.
"Send us the originals.""
"That may not be necessary.""
"Then we have nothing further to discuss.""
Thomas suddenly raised his voice.
"Richard, if you pull out now, you could destroy more than one family.""
Dad ended the call.
I sat motionless.
My father looked at me.
"Sarah, I need you to prepare yourself.""
"For what?""
He opened an email that had just arrived.
Then he turned his laptop toward me.
On the screen was a document bearing my full legal name.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
And above it was a sentence that made my heart stop.
*Personal Guarantor: Sarah Bennett Harrington.*
I stared at the screen.
I had never knowingly agreed to guarantee anyone's business debt.
May you like
And the amount listed beneath my signature was not six hundred thousand dollars.
It was twelve million.
