Amused

Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.

My father's voice came through the phone speaker.

"Sarah, I need you to step away from the people who hurt you.""

I looked down at Emma.

She was clinging to my leg, crying so hard that her little shoulders shook.

"I'm okay, sweetheart," I whispered.

But I wasn't.

My sweater was soaked. My cheek was swelling. A sharp burning sensation spread across my side.

One of Daniel's cousins, a woman named Catherine, finally stood.

"Sarah, you need to get some cold water on that.""

"Thank you," I whispered.

Linda rolled her eyes.

"Oh, please. It was an accident.""

I turned toward her.

"An accident?""

She gestured toward the overturned soup bowl.

"Everyone was emotional. You moved suddenly.""

My father heard her.

"Who said that?""

Linda looked at the phone.

"Excuse me?""

"My name is Richard Bennett. Who just said my daughter caused an accident?""

Linda blinked.

Daniel moved closer.

"Sarah, hang up.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because this is a private family matter.""

I almost laughed.

A private family matter?

His mother had slapped me in front of fourteen people. My daughter had watched her father do nothing. My husband had blamed me.

And now he wanted privacy.

Dad spoke again.

"Daniel, is that you?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes, Richard.""

"Good. Then perhaps you can explain why my daughter is crying, why my granddaughter is screaming, and why nobody has called for medical assistance.""

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

"Richard, there has been a misunderstanding.""

"A misunderstanding?""

"My mother and Sarah had an argument.""

"Did your mother strike my daughter?""

Daniel looked toward Linda.

"Things happened very quickly.""

Dad's voice became colder.

"That wasn't my question.""

Linda stepped forward.

"I don't know who you think you are, but you need to understand that this is my home.""

There was a pause.

Then my father answered.

"Linda Harrington, I know exactly who I am.""

She laughed.

"Well, good for you.""

"Now I suggest you stop speaking and listen.""

Linda's expression hardened.

"How dare you?""

Daniel suddenly grabbed his mother's arm.

"Mom. Please.""

She pulled away.

"Don't tell me what to do in my own house.""

I had never seen Daniel look so frightened.

My father continued.

"Sarah, is Emma with you?""

"Yes.""

"Good. Take her into another room. I don't want her standing there while adults argue.""

I picked Emma up.

Her little arms wrapped around my neck.

"Mommy, are we going home?""

"Yes, baby.""

Linda stepped in front of me.

"You're not leaving until we settle this.""

I stopped.

"Move.""

She looked shocked.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me. Move.""

Melissa approached from behind.

"Sarah, don't make this worse. Mom didn't mean to hurt you.""

I turned toward her.

"Would you say that if someone slapped you and poured boiling soup on you?""

Melissa's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

My father heard everything.

"Sarah, are you able to leave safely?""

"Yes.""

"Then leave. I'll meet you.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Richard, wait. We need to talk about this.""

Dad answered immediately.

"No, Daniel. You needed to talk about it before your mother put her hands on my daughter.""

I walked toward the front hallway.

Behind me, I heard Linda speaking to her guests.

"This is ridiculous. She's always been dramatic.""

One of Daniel's uncles quietly replied.

"Linda, I think you should stop.""

She ignored him.

"She came into my house, insulted me, and now she's calling people to threaten me.""

I reached the front door.

Then Daniel caught up.

"Sarah, wait.""

I turned.

He looked at Emma, then at my face.

"Please. Let's go somewhere private and talk.""

I stared at him.

"Talk about what?""

"About what happened.""

"What happened, Daniel?""

He looked toward the dining room.

"Mom lost her temper.""

"She slapped me.""

"I know.""

"She poured boiling soup on me.""

"It was an accident.""

I felt something inside me go completely still.

"Did you hear yourself?""

He lowered his voice.

"Sarah, please. My relatives are here.""

I looked at him.

"That is what you're worried about?""

He glanced toward the dining room again.

"I don't want this becoming a bigger situation than it needs to be.""

I shifted Emma higher on my hip.

"It already is.""

My father spoke through the phone.

"Daniel, move away from the door.""

Daniel froze.

"Richard, I am trying to resolve this.""

"No. You're trying to control the damage to your family's reputation. Those are different things.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You don't know everything that happened.""

"I know enough.""

Then Dad said something that made Daniel's face change again.

"Especially considering the business relationship your family has been pursuing with my company.""

Daniel stared at the phone.

Linda, who had followed us into the hallway, stopped walking.

"What business relationship?""

Nobody answered.

My father continued.

"Sarah, get into your car. I'll explain everything when I see you.""

I opened the front door.

Cold winter air rushed inside.

Daniel reached for my arm.

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

His expression crumpled.

"Sarah, I'm your husband.""

I looked down at the wedding ring still missing from his finger.

"No. You were supposed to be my husband.""

Then I walked outside.

The cold air stung my wet skin.

Emma buried her face in my neck.

I placed her in her car seat and buckled her in carefully.

My hands were shaking.

I sat behind the steering wheel and looked at the house.

Through the enormous front windows, I could see Linda gesturing angrily while Daniel stood near the dining room.

His sister Melissa was speaking to someone on her phone.

Then my phone rang.

It was my father.

"Sarah, where are you?""

"In the driveway.""

"Good. Don't drive yet. An ambulance is on its way.""

"Dad, I don't need—"

"Your skin may be burned. You need someone to examine it.""

I looked at my side.

The fabric was sticking painfully to my skin.

"Okay.""

"Listen to me. You did nothing wrong by calling.""

I closed my eyes.

For five years, I had wondered whether I was too sensitive, too demanding, too difficult.

My husband had trained me to question my own reactions.

And now my father was reminding me that I had a right to be protected.

"Dad?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Why was Daniel so afraid when I called you?""

He was quiet.

Then he answered.

"Because Daniel knows something he should have told you a long time ago.""

"What?""

"His family has been trying to secure a major investment from Bennett Global Holdings.""

I stared at the windshield.

"What does that have to do with me?""

"Everything, Sarah.""

Before I could ask another question, the front door opened.

Daniel came running down the steps.

He was no longer wearing his dinner jacket.

He had his phone in one hand and looked visibly shaken.

He tapped on my window.

I lowered it a few inches.

"Sarah, please. I need to explain something.""

I looked at him.

"Go ahead.""

He glanced at Emma in the back seat.

Then he lowered his voice.

"My mother doesn't know who your father really is, does she?""

I felt a chill that had nothing to do with the winter weather.

"Apparently, you do.""

He swallowed.

"Sarah, listen to me. There's something about the company deal. Mom and Dad have been working on it for months.""

"What company deal?""

He looked over his shoulder toward the house.

Then he said:

"Your father is supposed to sign the agreement on Monday.""

I stared at him.

"Sign what agreement?""

Daniel's phone began ringing.

He glanced at the screen.

His father's name appeared.

He answered.

"Yes, Dad?""

I couldn't hear the other side, but I saw Daniel's expression collapse.

"What?""

A pause.

"No, she's here.""

Another pause.

"Wait. What do you mean the meeting has been canceled?""

He looked at me.

Then he whispered:

"Why didn't you tell me?""

I almost smiled.

Because he had never asked.

And because I was beginning to understand that the Harringtons hadn't simply underestimated me.

They had built an entire plan around a woman they thought had nothing to offer them.

The ambulance arrived before Daniel could say another word.

And when the paramedic opened my car door, he looked at the burns on my side and immediately called for additional medical assistance.

Daniel stood motionless in the driveway.

For the first time in five years, I didn't feel responsible for comforting him.

I watched the paramedic carefully lift Emma from her seat and reassure her that Mommy would be okay.

Then I heard Daniel speaking into his phone.

"Tell Dad not to do anything until I speak to Sarah.""

I turned toward him.

May you like

He was staring at me.

And I realized that whatever business secret my father was about to reveal, Daniel was terrified I might discover it.
