Chapter 8: The Family Secret
The phone slipped from my hand.
It hit the floor.
But I barely heard the sound.
Because my mind was stuck on one sentence.
*Your mother.*
For a moment, I couldn’t understand the words.
Not because I didn’t hear them.
Because my brain refused to accept them.
My mother.
The woman who packed my lunches when I was a child.
The woman who sat beside my hospital bed when I had Lily.
The woman who cried at my wedding.
The woman who told me, “Your father would be so proud of you.””
Her.
No.
It couldn’t be.
Marcus moved toward me.
“Nia.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
The pain on his face was real.
But I didn’t know what was real anymore.
“Call her back.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Marcus looked confused.
“What?””
“Call Rachel back.””
He picked up the phone from the floor and handed it to me.
I pressed the button.
Rachel answered.
“Nia?””
My voice shook.
“Say it again.””
Silence.
“Say what you just said.””
Rachel hesitated.
Then:
“Your mother helped Daniel hide the money.””
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She wouldn’t.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“I know this is difficult.””
“You don’t know anything.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But I was breaking.
I was breaking because there were some betrayals your heart prepared for.
A husband’s betrayal.
A stranger’s betrayal.
But not your mother’s.
Not the person who taught you what love was supposed to look like.
Rachel continued carefully.
“Daniel has records.””
“What kind of records?””
“Bank transfers.””
I froze.
“Transfers to who?””
A pause.
“Your mother.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
And somehow that hurt more.
Because he believed it.
“You knew?””
He looked up.
“Nia…”
“You knew?””
His silence answered.
“How long?””
He swallowed.
“I found out after Daniel contacted me.””
I stared at him.
“You found out my mother was involved and you still didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to confirm it.””
“You were trying?””
My voice rose.
“You have spent years trying.””
I pointed at him.
“And every time, someone else gets hurt.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“I wanted to protect you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I wiped my face.
“Protect me from what?””
He didn’t answer.
“From the truth?””
Silence.
“Because the truth was coming anyway.””
I walked to the window.
Outside, the world looked normal.
Cars moving.
People walking.
A mother pushing a stroller across the street.
I wondered how many people were living inside secrets.
How many people were smiling while everything underneath was falling apart.
“I need to see Daniel.””
Marcus immediately looked alarmed.
“No.””
I turned around.
“No?””
“He’s dangerous.””
I stared at him.
“Dangerous?””
“Yes.””
I almost smiled.
“Marcus, my entire life has been changed by people making decisions for me.””
I grabbed my coat.
“I’m done letting that happen.””
“You don’t know what he’ll say.””
“Good.””
I looked at him.
“Maybe someone will finally tell me the truth.””
Two hours later, I was sitting across from Daniel Reeves.
The man whose name had followed my family for years.
The man my father blamed for destroying everything.
The man I believed was a villain.
But now I wasn’t sure who the villains were anymore.
Daniel looked older than I expected.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face that looked like it had carried too many years of guilt.
He placed a folder on the table.
“You look like your father.””
I hated how much that affected me.
“Don’t.””
He looked surprised.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t talk about my father like you knew him.””
His expression fell.
“I did know him.””
“You destroyed him.””
He looked down.
“That’s what everyone believes.””
I leaned forward.
“Isn’t it true?””
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Pages of numbers.
Bank records.
Contracts.
Names.
“I made mistakes.””
I stared at him.
“That’s a small word for what happened.””
“Yes.””
He didn’t argue.
That surprised me.
“I’m not here to ask you to forgive me.””
“Good.””
“I’m here because you deserve the truth.””
I looked at the documents.
“Start.””
Daniel took a breath.
“Your father’s company was not failing.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“It was profitable.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did it collapse?””
He looked at me.
“Because money was being moved.””
“By you?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
He pushed one document toward me.
I looked down.
At the signature.
The name.
My hands went cold.
It was my mother’s signature.
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“She managed certain financial accounts.””
I shook my head.
“My mother wasn’t involved in the business.””
“She was.””
I looked up.
“She never told me.””
“I know.””
I swallowed.
“What did she do?””
Daniel was quiet.
“She helped transfer company funds into private accounts.””
I stared at him.
“How much?””
He looked at the paper.
“Over two hundred thousand dollars.””
The number didn’t feel real.
“My mother stole from my father?””
Daniel didn’t answer directly.
“She made choices.””
I stood up.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Nia.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“This is a lie.””
I grabbed the folder.
“You’re trying to make yourself look innocent.””
His expression didn’t change.
“I expected you to say that.””
“Because it’s true.””
He reached into the folder.
Then pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I looked down.
And my breath stopped.
It was my mother.
Standing with Daniel.
Years ago.
Before my father died.
Before everything fell apart.
I looked closer.
There was someone else in the picture.
Someone standing beside them.
Someone I recognized.
Marcus.
My hands started shaking.
“Why is he there?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Marcus was never just a witness.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“He was part of the agreement.””
The room went silent.
My heart pounded.
“No.””
“Nia…”
“No.””
I pushed the photo away.
“You’re lying.””
Daniel sighed.
“I wish I was.””
I stood.
“Then why did Marcus marry me?””
Daniel looked at me.
And the answer made my blood run cold.
“Because he thought marrying you would make sure the truth stayed buried.””
I couldn’t breathe.
No.
That couldn’t be true.
Marcus had loved me.
Hadn’t he?
Hadn’t he?
Daniel watched my face.
“I know what you want to believe.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“That Marcus changed.””
My eyes burned.
“That he met you and became a better man.””
I said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“But the truth is…”
He paused.
“He met you because you were the closest connection he had to the one person who could expose everything.””
I felt sick.
I walked outside without saying goodbye.
The folder was still in my hands.
The photographs.
The documents.
The proof.
Everything I never asked for.
Everything I never wanted.
When I reached my car, my phone rang.
It was Marcus.
I almost didn’t answer.
Almost.
But I needed to hear him lie.
I needed to hear whether there was anything left.
I answered.
“Why?””
There was silence.
Then Marcus said:
“Nia, before you believe Daniel, you need to know something.””
I closed my eyes.
“What?””
His voice cracked.
“Daniel didn’t tell you the most important part.””
I waited.
“What part?””
A long pause.
Then:
“The reason your father died…”
My heart stopped.
Marcus whispered:
“It wasn’t because of the money.””
I gripped the phone.
“Then why?””
His answer came quietly.
“Because he discovered who was really behind everything.””
The line went silent.
And then Marcus said the one name I never expected.
“Your mother wasn’t the person controlling it.””
I froze.
“Then who was?””
Marcus took a shaky breath.
“Nia…”
May you like
The fear in his voice was unmistakable.
“It was someone much closer to you.””
