Amused

Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden Before Our Wedding

I stared at the message on Marcus’s phone.

*I found Daniel. But you need to see what he has before Nia does.*

Those words felt like a warning.

Not just to Marcus.

To me.

Because whoever Daniel Reeves was now, whatever he had, it was something Marcus believed could destroy him.

And after everything I had learned in the past twenty-four hours, I wasn’t sure I wanted to know.

But I knew something else.

I was done living in the dark.

“Call her.””

Marcus looked up.

“What?””

I pointed at his phone.

“Call Rachel.””

His expression changed immediately.

“No.””

“No?””

“Nia, this is complicated.””

I almost laughed.

“Everything with you is complicated.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle anymore.””

He looked at me.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“You’re hurt.””

“Yes.””

“But you don’t know everything.””

I shook my head.

“That’s exactly the problem.””

The room became quiet.

For years, I had built my marriage around the idea that Marcus and I were partners.

Two people facing life together.

But now I realized I had been standing beside him while he fought battles he never told me about.

He wasn’t protecting me.

He was keeping me outside.

Marcus looked down at his phone.

Finally, he pressed call.

Rachel answered almost immediately.

“Marcus?””

Her voice sounded tense.

“I’m here with Nia,” he said.

There was silence.

Then Rachel spoke.

“Good.””

I frowned.

Good?

That was not the response I expected.

“What does Daniel have?”” I asked.

Another pause.

Then Rachel answered.

“Documents.””

“What kind of documents?””

“Records.””

My eyes moved to Marcus.

“What records?””

Rachel sighed.

“Financial records.””

My stomach tightened.

“About the money?””

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“About before.””

Before.

That one word carried too much weight.

“Before what?”” I asked.

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Rachel didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“Before your wedding.””

The air left my lungs.

I looked at Marcus.

He couldn’t meet my eyes.

“What does that mean?””

“Nia…”

“No.””

I gripped the phone.

“Rachel, tell me.””

She was quiet.

Then:

“Marcus had another business partner before you met him.””

I waited.

“And?””

“And that person was Daniel Reeves.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“My father’s former partner?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Marcus.

“How?””

Rachel continued.

“After your father’s company collapsed, Daniel disappeared with money.””

I nodded slowly.

“I know that story.””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice changed.

“You know the story your family was told.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Like he already knew what was coming.

Rachel continued.

“Daniel didn’t just take money from your father.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Then what did he take?””

A long pause.

“Evidence.””

I looked confused.

“Evidence of what?””

Rachel answered softly.

“Evidence that Marcus was involved.””

The room went completely still.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked like he had been waiting for this moment for years.

“No,” I whispered.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Nia, listen.””

I backed away.

“Were you?””

“Nia.””

“Were you involved with my father’s company?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was all I needed.

My heart started beating faster.

“You knew Daniel before you met me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew what happened to my family.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father lost everything because of him.””

“Yes.””

“And you still married me?””

His face changed.

“Nia, it wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

He looked desperate.

“I didn’t know the full truth.””

“Enough.””

My voice broke.

“Enough with the excuses.””

I looked at him.

“You knew something.””

“Yes.””

“And you kept it from me.””

“Yes.””

I felt tears forming.

Not because of the money anymore.

Not because of Rachel.

Not because of the restaurant.

Because I suddenly wondered how much of my life had been built on a lie.

“Why?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would hate me.””

I stared at him.

“You were right.””

The words hurt both of us.

But I meant them.

Marcus sat down.

“I met your father once.””

I stayed standing.

“When?””

“Before he died.””

My chest tightened.

“You met my father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He took a deep breath.

“Because I was working for Daniel.””

The room felt like it tilted.

“Working for him?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You were part of his company?””

“Not exactly.””

“Then explain.””

Marcus rubbed his hands together.

“I was young. Twenty-four.””

“So?””

“I was desperate.””

I stared at him.

“That’s always your reason.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“You were desperate when you took the money.””

I counted on my fingers.

“You were desperate when you lied to Rachel.””

“You were desperate when you hid this.””

I shook my head.

“When does desperation stop becoming an excuse?””

He looked away.

I continued.

“What did you do for Daniel?””

Marcus was silent.

Then:

“I handled accounts.””

My stomach turned.

“Accounts?””

“Yes.””

“Were you involved in stealing from my father?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

“Then what happened?””

He swallowed.

“Daniel manipulated numbers.””

“What does that mean?””

“He moved money around. Hid transactions.””

I stared at him.

“And you helped?””

“I didn’t know at first.””

“At first?””

He closed his eyes.

“I found out later.””

The words were barely a whisper.

“And you stayed?””

“I was scared.””

I looked away.

There it was again.

Fear.

Always fear.

“What happened after?””

“Your father discovered it.””

My breathing slowed.

“He confronted Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“And you?””

“I wanted to help.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked broken.

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

I waited.

“He said if I went to your father, he would blame everything on me.””

I stared at him.

“Could he?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That scared me more.

“Could he blame you?””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“What did you do?””

“I left.””

“You abandoned my father?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I tried to fix it.””

I almost laughed.

Again.

That phrase.

“I tried to fix it.””

“And what happened?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Your father died before he could clear his name.””

The room went silent.

My father.

The man who spent his final months believing he had failed.

The man who died with everyone thinking he was responsible for something he didn’t do.

And Marcus knew.

He knew there was another side.

He knew there were answers.

And he said nothing.

“You let my father die with that pain.””

Marcus’s eyes filled.

“I was a coward.””

“Yes.””

I didn’t soften.

“You were.””

The truth sat between us.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Then Rachel spoke on the phone.

“Nia?””

I almost forgot she was there.

“Yes?””

“There’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

There was always something else.

“What?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Daniel didn’t just keep records about Marcus.””

My heart sank.

“Who else?””

“He kept records about everyone involved.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“It means Daniel has proof that Marcus wasn’t the only person who lied to you.””

I felt a chill.

“Who else?””

A pause.

Then:

“Nia…”

“What?””

Rachel whispered:

“The person who helped Daniel hide the money after your father’s company collapsed…”

My fingers went cold.

“Who?””

Rachel answered.

And the name she said next made me drop the phone.

Because it was impossible.

It was someone I had trusted my entire life.

Someone who had comforted me after my father died.

May you like

Someone who had told me they loved me.

“Your mother.””
