Amused

Chapter 5: The Picture That Changed Everything

I stared at the screen.

At first, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

It was easier to believe that I was exhausted.

That I was overwhelmed.

That my emotions were making things look worse than they were.

But the photograph didn’t change.

It didn’t disappear.

It didn’t become something else.

There was Marcus.

Standing outside a building I recognized.

And beside him…

My brother.

Ethan.

My husband’s best friend.

The man who had stood beside Marcus on our wedding day.

The man who held Lily the day she was born.

The man who called me “family.””

I looked up slowly.

“What is this?””

Marcus’s face was pale.

“Nia…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“What is this?””

He looked at the picture again.

Like maybe if he stared at it long enough, it would somehow save him.

It wouldn’t.

“Why are you with Ethan?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than the picture.

Because I had learned something about Marcus that night.

When he was innocent, he explained.

When he was guilty, he went quiet.

I stepped closer.

“You lied about Rachel.””

He swallowed.

“You lied about the money.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“And now you’re standing here with my brother?””

“Nia, it’s not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

Those words.

Again.

Every person who had something to hide used the same sentence.

“It’s not what you think.””

I looked at him.

“Then tell me what I should think.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt like they were closing in.

I looked back at the picture.

“Where was this taken?””

Marcus looked away.

“Marcus.””

“Ethan’s office.””

I froze.

“My brother’s office?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then:

“We were talking.””

“About what?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked toward him.

“About what?””

His eyes met mine.

And I saw something there.

Fear.

Not fear of losing me.

Fear of what I would discover next.

“Business.””

I stared at him.

“What business?””

“Nia…”

I shook my head.

“No. You don’t get to do that anymore.””

“Do what?””

“Say my name instead of answering.””

He looked down.

I continued.

“You took our savings.””

“I was going to fix it.””

“You lied to Rachel.””

“I was confused.””

“You lied about our marriage.””

“I was scared.””

I stepped closer.

“And now I find out you were meeting with my brother behind my back.””

My voice lowered.

“What else?””

He stayed silent.

That was the moment I knew.

There was more.

There was always more.

I sat down on the edge of the bed because suddenly my legs felt weak.

“Tell me everything.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia…”

“Everything.””

The apartment was completely quiet.

Then he finally spoke.

“Ethan knew about the investment.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“He knew I put money into it.””

“And?””

“He helped me.””

I stared at him.

“My brother helped you lose our money?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head quickly.

“He tried to help me recover it.””

“Recover it?””

I repeated.

“You mean after you lost it?””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

I covered my mouth for a second.

Because somehow, the betrayal kept growing.

Every time I thought I had reached the bottom, there was another hidden floor beneath it.

“How much did Ethan know?””

Marcus hesitated.

“All of it.””

The room went silent.

“All of it?””

He nodded.

“He knew the account was low.””

“He knew we were struggling?””

“Yes.””

I stood up.

Slowly.

Calmly.

That calm scared Marcus.

“Nia…”

I walked past him.

I picked up my phone.

I didn’t know what I was going to do.

Call Ethan?

Scream?

Demand answers?

But before I could unlock the screen, Marcus spoke again.

“There’s something else.””

I stopped.

Of course there was.

“What?””

He looked like he hated himself.

“I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d leave.””

I turned around.

“What?””

His eyes were red.

“The money wasn’t the only reason.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

He sat down.

“I met with Ethan because he knew someone who could help me.””

“Help you with what?””

He rubbed his hands together nervously.

“My debt.””

I stared at him.

“What debt?””

He looked at the floor.

“I had other debts.””

The room spun slightly.

“How much?””

“Nia…”

“How much?””

He whispered the number.

“Twenty thousand.””

I felt numb.

Twenty thousand.

Forty thousand.

Thirty-two thousand.

Numbers that no longer felt real.

Numbers that represented months of my life.

Months of working.

Saving.

Planning.

Trying to create a stable home for Lily.

While Marcus was secretly drowning us.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“You weren’t ashamed.””

My voice hardened.

“You were afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Afraid I would see you differently.””

He didn’t respond.

Because I was right.

He wasn’t protecting me.

He was protecting himself.

The next morning, I went to Ethan’s house.

I didn’t tell Marcus.

I needed one person to tell me the truth without preparing a story first.

Ethan opened the door wearing a gray sweatshirt.

The second he saw my face, his expression changed.

“Nia.””

I held up my phone.

“We need to talk.””

His eyes moved to the picture.

Then back to me.

“Who sent you that?””

I felt something cold inside me.

Not shock.

Not surprise.

Confirmation.

“You knew about it.””

He sighed.

“Nia, come inside.””

“No.””

I stood on the porch.

“I don’t want comfort.””

His face fell.

“I want the truth.””

He looked away.

That hurt.

Because Ethan had always been the person I trusted most.

When my parents passed away, he was the one who stayed with me.

When I was pregnant and scared, he was the one who brought groceries.

When Marcus worked late, Ethan was the person who checked on us.

And now he was standing in front of me with secrets.

“How long?””

He looked confused.

“How long what?””

“How long have you known Marcus was lying to me?””

His silence answered.

“Ethan.””

He took a deep breath.

“Since before Lily was born.””

I felt like someone had punched the air out of my lungs.

“Before?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“I wanted him to tell you.””

“But he didn’t.””

“No.””

“And you let him?””

Ethan looked guilty.

“I thought he would fix it.””

I stared at him.

“You thought?””

My voice cracked.

“You thought while I was building a life with him?””

“I was trying to give him a chance.””

I laughed bitterly.

“A chance?””

I stepped back.

“You gave my husband a chance while I was the one paying the price.””

“Nia, I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t need you to be sorry.””

The words came out quietly.

“I need to know why.””

Ethan looked at me.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Because Marcus wasn’t the only one who made a mistake.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

Like he had just realized there was no way back.

“There’s something Marcus doesn’t know.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What?””

He looked over my shoulder.

At the street.

At the world outside.

Then back at me.

“Nia…”

“What?””

He swallowed.

“The money you think Marcus lost…”

I waited.

“It wasn’t all lost.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“I’m saying someone took it.””

The world went quiet.

“Who?””

He looked terrified.

And then he said a name.

A name I never expected.

May you like

A name that made me question every memory I had of my own family.

“Your father’s old business partner.””
