Chapter 9: The Guardian Nobody Expected
The attorney’s voice stayed on the phone.
“The emergency guardian listed in the document is Vanessa Reed.””
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Vanessa.
Daniel’s mistress.
The woman who stood in my hospital room and recorded my pain.
The woman who looked at my restraints and called me unstable.
The woman who helped Daniel build the lie.
She wasn’t just a witness.
She was the person they planned to give my baby to.
“No,” Olivia whispered.
Her voice sounded broken.
“No, that wasn’t supposed to happen.””
Everyone turned toward her.
The attorney heard it.
“Who is that?””
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
Because my sister’s reaction told me something.
She knew more than she admitted.
Olivia covered her mouth.
“I thought they were trying to get Emma help.””
My eyes moved toward her.
“What did you think would happen?””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
My voice was quiet.
But the room felt heavy.
“You keep saying you didn’t know.””
Olivia looked at me.
“I swear I didn’t know they wanted Vanessa to take the baby.””
The attorney interrupted.
“Mrs. Carter, I need to ask something.””
“What?””
“Did your sister sign the custody document?””
I looked at Olivia.
She looked down.
The silence answered.
The attorney sighed.
“That explains something.””
“What?””
“The document was structured in a way that made multiple people responsible.””
I frowned.
“Meaning?””
“Your husband created layers.””
I listened carefully.
“Your sister provided statements about your behavior. His mother provided family testimony. Your doctor provided medical concerns. Vanessa was positioned as the emergency guardian.””
The room felt colder with every word.
“They didn’t need one person to prove everything,” the attorney continued.
“They built a chain.””
A chain.
That was exactly what it was.
Each person holding one piece.
Each person telling themselves they were only helping.
Each person making it harder for me to defend myself.
The attorney continued.
“I need to know something. Has Vanessa ever had a relationship with your child?””
I almost laughed.
“My child isn’t even born.””
“Exactly.””
The administrator looked at the documents.
“This appears premeditated.””
Nobody disagreed.
Then Officer Bennett stepped forward.
“I need that document forwarded immediately.””
The attorney agreed.
“I’ll send everything I have.””
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
There was a pause.
“Because I also found something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“The file contained communication between Daniel and Vanessa.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What kind of communication?””
“About the baby.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The baby.
The one person who couldn’t speak.
The one person they were fighting over.
“What did they say?””
The attorney hesitated.
“Mrs. Carter, I think you need to see it yourself.””
My heart sank.
“Send it.””
A few seconds later, my phone received several files.
Messages.
Emails.
Documents.
I opened the first one.
The sender was Daniel.
The recipient was Vanessa.
The date was from two weeks earlier.
Before the hospital.
Before the restraint.
Before I knew anything.
The message was short.
Once Emma is declared unstable, everything becomes easier.
I felt sick.
I opened the next message.
The doctor is already prepared. We only need the final incident.
Final incident.
The hospital.
That was what I was.
Not a wife.
Not a person.
An incident.
I opened another file.
Vanessa’s response.
What if she fights?
Daniel replied:
She always does.
Another message:
That’s why we need her to react.
I stared at the screen.
The same words.
The same strategy.
Push me.
Record me.
Use my pain against me.
Then I saw the final message.
The one that made my entire body freeze.
Daniel wrote:
After delivery, she won’t have the strength to fight.
Nobody spoke.
I couldn’t.
Nurse Rachel gently took my hand.
“Emma.””
I looked at her.
“I’m okay.””
But I wasn’t.
Not really.
Because there was something worse than discovering someone wanted to hurt you.
It was discovering they had studied exactly how.
Officer Bennett looked at the messages.
“This changes the situation.””
The administrator nodded.
“This is evidence of planning.””
Then the hospital door opened.
A security officer entered.
“Officer Bennett?””
He turned.
“Yes?””
“Mr. Carter is requesting to speak with someone.””
My body immediately reacted.
“No.””
The officer looked at me.
“He specifically requested his wife.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t want to see him.””
Nobody argued.
Because for the first time, my choice mattered.
The officer nodded.
“I’ll let him know.””
But before he left, my phone rang again.
The attorney.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice was urgent.
“Emma, there’s one more thing.””
I closed my eyes.
“What now?””
“I reviewed the emergency guardian paperwork again.””
“And?””
“There is a signature issue.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What does that mean?””
“The document says Vanessa was selected because she was considered a trusted caregiver.””
I laughed bitterly.
“She’s never cared for my baby.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
A pause.
“Because someone signed a statement claiming she had been involved in your prenatal care.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who signed it?””
The attorney didn’t answer immediately.
That was becoming a pattern.
“Tell me.””
Finally:
“Your sister.””
I looked at Olivia.
She broke down.
“I didn’t know what it was for.””
My anger returned.
“You signed that she was involved in my pregnancy?””
“I thought it was about support.””
“You thought?””
My voice cracked.
“How many times did you sign something without reading it?””
She covered her face.
“I trusted them.””
I stared at her.
“And I trusted you.””
The words hurt both of us.
Because they were true.
Olivia cried silently.
Then Officer Bennett’s radio made a sound.
He listened.
His expression changed.
“What happened?””
He looked at the others.
Then at me.
“We found Mr. Carter’s vehicle.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
The officer hesitated.
“Because he left something behind.””
“What?””
He looked at the tablet in his hand.
“A storage device.””
My heart started racing.
“Where?””
“In the parking area.””
“Why is that important?””
Officer Bennett looked at the files on my phone.
“Because it appears to contain copies of the recordings and documents.””
The administrator nodded.
“That could confirm everything.””
But Officer Bennett didn’t look relieved.
He looked concerned.
“There’s something strange.””
“What?””
“The device was not hidden.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“It was left in an envelope on the driver’s seat.””
The room became quiet.
“That doesn’t make sense,” Olivia whispered.
No.
It didn’t.
Daniel was careful.
He planned everything.
He protected himself.
He didn’t accidentally leave evidence behind.
Unless…
I looked at the phone.
At the messages.
At the documents.
At the timeline.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“What if he wanted us to find it?””
Everyone looked at me.
Officer Bennett’s expression changed.
“Why would he?””
I swallowed.
“Because Daniel always controls the story.””
The room went silent.
“If he left that device…”
I looked at the evidence around me.
“The question isn’t what’s on it.””
Nurse Rachel frowned.
“Then what is?””
I stared at the envelope.
“The question is what he wants us to believe is on it.””
Officer Bennett immediately moved toward the door.
“We need to examine it carefully.””
But before he left, his phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds passed.
Then his face changed completely.
“Where?””
Everyone looked at him.
He lowered the phone.
“The police department received another call.””
My heart sank.
“From Daniel?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
He looked directly at me.
And the fear in his eyes told me this was worse.
“From someone claiming to be Daniel’s victim.””
I froze.
“What?””
Officer Bennett looked at the phone.
“She says Daniel has done this before.””
The room went silent.
“Before me?””
He nodded.
“And she says she has proof.””
A chill ran through me.
Because suddenly I realized something.
Daniel’s plan against me wasn’t his first attempt.
It was a pattern.
And someone else had survived it.
The officer turned toward the door.
“She’s on her way here.””
I whispered:
“Who is she?””
He looked at the name on the screen.
May you like
And answered:
“Daniel’s first wife.””
