Amused

Chapter 6: The Agreement Nobody Was Supposed to See

Sarah froze.

Her hand remained around the phone, but she didn’t move.

She didn’t even breathe.

Daniel’s voice came through the speaker again.

“Sarah? Are you there?””

The entire room heard him.

Every word.

Every pause.

Every nervous breath.

I watched my best friend’s face change.

First confusion.

Then fear.

Then guilt.

And that last emotion hurt the most.

Because guilt meant she knew something.

Nurse Rachel immediately stepped closer.

“Please keep the call on speaker.””

Sarah looked at her.

“I…”

The administrator nodded.

“Ms. Sarah, we need you to leave it on speaker.””

Slowly, Sarah lowered her hand.

“Daniel?””

His voice relaxed slightly.

“There you are.””

He sounded normal.

That was what scared me.

After everything.

After the hospital.

After the recordings.

After the evidence.

He still sounded like the same calm, reasonable man everyone trusted.

“I was wondering if you talked to Emma yet.””

Sarah swallowed.

“Why?””

A pause.

A very short pause.

But everyone noticed.

“Because she needs to understand what’s happening.””

I stared at the phone.

What’s happening.

Not what he did.

Not what he caused.

What’s happening.

Like he was still watching from above.

Like he wasn’t the person responsible.

Sarah looked at me.

Then away.

Daniel continued.

“You know she’s going to try to manipulate people.””

My hands tightened.

Nurse Rachel immediately noticed.

She put a hand gently on my shoulder.

Not to silence me.

To remind me I wasn’t alone.

Sarah’s voice was quiet.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“Why did you call me?””

Another pause.

Then Daniel laughed softly.

“Because I need to know what she told you.””

My stomach dropped.

Not concern.

Information.

That was all he wanted.

Sarah looked sick.

“Daniel, I don’t think this is right.””

His voice changed.

Only slightly.

But I heard it.

The warmth disappeared.

“What do you mean?””

“I mean…”

She looked at me.

“I don’t think I should be involved anymore.””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Sarah, be careful.””

Her face went pale.

There it was.

The warning.

The same kind he gave everyone.

“I’m not threatening you,” he said quickly.

Which meant he knew it sounded like a threat.

“I’m reminding you that you signed an agreement.””

The administrator leaned forward.

“Agreement?””

Sarah closed her eyes.

Daniel continued.

“You understood what you agreed to.””

She whispered:

“I thought I was helping Emma.””

My heart stopped.

Helping me.

Sarah looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I thought…”

Daniel interrupted.

“Don’t do this.””

The room went silent.

Because his tone wasn’t the tone of a friend.

It wasn’t the tone of someone asking.

It was the tone of someone giving an order.

Sarah flinched.

I saw it.

And suddenly I understood.

Daniel didn’t just control people with secrets.

He controlled them with fear.

The administrator spoke.

“Mr. Carter, this call is being documented.””

There was a long silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Who is there?””

Nobody answered.

He knew.

I could hear it.

He knew something had changed.

“Emma?””

I stared at the phone.

Hearing my name from him made my skin crawl.

Sarah looked at me.

I didn’t say anything.

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“Emma, if you’re listening, you need to stop making this worse.””

I almost laughed.

Worse.

Again.

Always that word.

“You are putting our child at risk.””

Nurse Rachel immediately looked at me.

I shook my head.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was tired.

Tired of him using our baby as a weapon.

The administrator picked up the phone.

“Mr. Carter, this conversation is being recorded.””

Daniel went silent.

Then:

“Good.””

Everyone looked surprised.

Good?

Daniel continued.

“Then you’ll hear that I’m trying to protect my wife.””

The administrator’s expression didn’t change.

“Your wife has stated that she does not consent to your involvement at this time.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“She doesn’t understand what she’s saying.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because it hurt.

Because it confirmed everything.

To Daniel, my choices only mattered when they matched his.

The administrator looked at Sarah.

“Ms. Sarah, did you sign an agreement with Mr. Carter?””

Sarah’s face crumpled.

“Yes.””

“What kind of agreement?””

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

“Sarah.””

My voice was barely above a whisper.

“What did you sign?””

She wiped her tears.

“He asked me to write a statement.””

“What statement?””

“That I had noticed changes in you.””

My chest tightened.

“Changes?””

She nodded.

“He said it was only to help doctors understand your stress.””

“And what did you write?””

She looked down.

“I wrote that you had become suspicious, emotional, and unpredictable.””

The words felt like another belt tightening around my body.

Not because they were true.

Because they were written by someone I loved.

Sarah rushed to explain.

“But I didn’t say you were dangerous.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You just gave him the words he needed.””

She started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But underneath that anger was something worse.

Disappointment.

Because Sarah knew me.

She knew my voice.

My personality.

My heart.

And Daniel convinced her to doubt all of it.

The administrator asked:

“When did you sign this?””

Sarah hesitated.

“Two weeks ago.””

“Before or after Mrs. Carter discovered the affair?””

Sarah looked down.

“After.””

I closed my eyes.

So even after she knew Daniel hurt me…

She helped him build a case against me.

Nurse Rachel asked:

“Did Mr. Carter ask you to record Mrs. Carter?””

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

A small relief.

Then she added:

“He asked me to watch her.””

Everyone became still.

“Watch her?””

Sarah nodded.

“He said he was worried she would do something irrational.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah looked at me.

“He wanted me to tell him whenever you cried.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Whenever I cried.

My pain had become data.

Every breakdown.

Every moment of fear.

Every time I needed support.

He collected it.

The administrator looked toward the door.

“Security.””

A guard appeared.

“Yes?””

“Mr. Carter needs to remain available for further questions.””

Sarah covered her face.

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at her.

“I believe you didn’t know the whole plan.””

She looked relieved for half a second.

Then I continued.

“But you knew enough.””

Her face fell.

And she nodded.

Because she knew I was right.

A few minutes later, Sarah left the room.

Not because she was forced.

Because she couldn’t face me anymore.

After the door closed, I stared at the papers.

The recordings.

The signatures.

The statements.

Everything.

A question kept repeating in my mind.

How long had Daniel been planning this?

The administrator gathered the documents.

“We need to investigate every person involved.””

I nodded.

Then Olivia suddenly spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

Her face was terrified.

“What?”” I asked.

She looked at the folder.

“The custody request.””

“What about it?””

She swallowed.

“I saw another name attached.””

My heart sank.

“Whose?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Not a family member.””

The room became quiet.

“Then who?””

Olivia looked at me.

“The person who approved Daniel’s request before the hospital.””

I frowned.

“Approved?””

She nodded.

“He already had someone willing to testify that you were unstable.””

“Who?””

Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your doctor.””

My blood ran cold.

“My doctor?””

She nodded.

“The doctor who has been monitoring your pregnancy.””

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly the hospital room didn’t feel safe anymore.

The one place I thought would protect me.

The one place where someone finally listened.

Had someone inside already been part of Daniel’s plan?

Nurse Rachel immediately stood up.

“Which doctor?””

Olivia opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the door opened.

A man in a white coat stood there.

He looked at the documents on the table.

Then at me.

Then at the recording device.

And his expression changed.

Because he knew.

He knew everything had been discovered.

“Dr. Harris,” Nurse Rachel said slowly.

The doctor forced a smile.

“I heard there was some confusion.””

Nobody responded.

Then the administrator looked at him.

“Doctor…”

He held up the document.

“Would you like to explain why your signature appears on a custody recommendation for a patient who never consented to an evaluation?””

Dr. Harris said nothing.

And that silence told me something I didn’t want to believe.

Daniel’s plan was bigger than I thought.

Much bigger.
