Chapter 7: The Doctor Who Chose His Side
Dr. Harris stood in the doorway like he had walked into the wrong room.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
The confidence he usually carried—the calm smile, the reassuring voice, the gentle way he placed a hand on my shoulder during appointments—was gone.
Now he looked like a man who had been caught somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be.
Nurse Rachel stepped forward.
“Doctor, please come inside.””
He didn’t move.
“I think there has been a misunderstanding.””
The administrator looked at the document in his hand.
“A misunderstanding usually involves confusion.””
He lifted the paper.
“This involves your signature.””
Dr. Harris swallowed.
I stared at him.
My doctor.
The man who had monitored every ultrasound.
The man who had listened to my baby’s heartbeat.
The man who told me everything was going to be okay.
I remembered the first appointment.
I was terrified.
I had spent weeks worrying after discovering Daniel’s affair.
I had barely slept.
I told Dr. Harris that I felt overwhelmed.
He smiled and said:
“Stress is normal during pregnancy. The important thing is that you have support around you.””
Support.
I thought he meant family.
I thought he meant Daniel.
I never imagined he meant a group of people building a case against me.
“Dr. Harris,” I said quietly.
He looked at me.
“Did you know?””
His expression changed.
“Emma…”
“Did you know Daniel was trying to take my baby?””
He looked away.
That was enough.
I didn’t need an answer.
Nurse Rachel noticed too.
“Doctor, I’m going to ask you again. Did you provide information about this patient to Mr. Carter?””
Dr. Harris stepped into the room slowly.
“I was concerned about Mrs. Carter’s wellbeing.””
My stomach tightened.
There it was.
The same phrase.
Concern.
Always concern.
Nobody ever said they wanted to hurt me.
They said they wanted to help me.
“I never asked you to evaluate my ability to be a mother,” I said.
Dr. Harris looked uncomfortable.
“Emma, you were under significant emotional distress.””
“Yes.””
I nodded.
“I was.””
He looked surprised.
Maybe he expected me to deny it.
But I wouldn’t.
I was hurt.
I was angry.
I was devastated.
I was pregnant and watching my marriage collapse.
Of course I was distressed.
“But being distressed is not the same as being dangerous.””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew that.
The administrator placed the document on the table.
“Doctor, did you write this recommendation?””
Dr. Harris looked at the paper.
“Yes.””
“Did you personally evaluate Mrs. Carter for custody concerns?””
He hesitated.
“No.””
The room became silent.
The administrator looked up.
“Then what was the basis?””
Dr. Harris rubbed his hands together.
“Information provided by her husband.””
I felt a wave of disbelief.
“You believed Daniel without talking to me?””
“I had spoken with you during appointments.””
“About my pregnancy.””
“Yes.””
“Not about whether I was a danger to my baby.””
Dr. Harris said nothing.
Nurse Rachel crossed her arms.
“So you made a recommendation based on one person’s account?””
Dr. Harris looked defensive.
“Mr. Carter was her husband.””
The administrator’s expression hardened.
“That does not make him an unbiased source.””
The doctor looked toward the door.
“I think this conversation is becoming inappropriate.””
“No,” I said.
My voice surprised even me.
“This conversation is finally becoming honest.””
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at Dr. Harris.
“I trusted you.””
His face changed.
A tiny flicker of guilt.
“I was trying to help.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to protect the story Daniel created.””
The doctor looked down.
And that hurt more than if he had argued.
Because silence was becoming everyone’s answer.
Nurse Rachel picked up the file.
“There is something I want clarified.””
She turned toward Dr. Harris.
“Did Mr. Carter ever mention a custody arrangement before today?””
The doctor hesitated.
Then:
“Yes.””
My heart dropped.
“When?””
“About two weeks ago.””
Two weeks.
The same time Daniel had started collecting statements.
The same time he convinced Sarah.
The same time he began pushing me toward a breakdown.
“What did he say?”” the administrator asked.
Dr. Harris looked uncomfortable.
“He said he was afraid his wife would not be able to care for the baby.””
I laughed quietly.
Everyone looked at me.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“He planned this before I even came here.””
Nobody disagreed.
Dr. Harris lowered his voice.
“I didn’t think he would do this.””
I stared at him.
“You didn’t think?””
He looked at me.
“I thought he was trying to find support.””
“Support for what?””
He didn’t answer.
The administrator stepped closer.
“Doctor, did you receive any documents from Mr. Carter?””
Another hesitation.
That hesitation was becoming unbearable.
“Yes.””
“What documents?””
“Videos.””
My blood went cold.
“Videos of me?””
He nodded.
“How many?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did you verify their authenticity?””
He looked away.
“No.””
The room became silent again.
The administrator took a breath.
“So you made a medical recommendation based on edited recordings provided by the patient’s spouse.””
Dr. Harris looked ashamed.
“I made a mistake.””
I closed my eyes.
A mistake.
Everyone had a mistake.
Daniel’s was a mistake.
Olivia’s was a mistake.
Sarah’s was a mistake.
Linda’s was a mistake.
But every mistake led to me sitting in a hospital chair with a belt around my pregnant stomach.
Every mistake had consequences for me.
The administrator collected the papers.
“This matter will be reviewed.””
Dr. Harris nodded.
Then he looked at me.
“Emma, I am sorry.””
I wanted to accept that.
I really did.
But I couldn’t.
Because sorry didn’t give me back the weeks I spent questioning myself.
Sorry didn’t erase the fear.
Sorry didn’t erase the fact that I had trusted him with my baby’s health.
The doctor left quietly.
After the door closed, Olivia whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For bringing you into this.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked confused.
“No?””
“You didn’t create this.””
I looked at the folder.
“Daniel did.””
A silence settled over us.
Not peaceful.
Heavy.
The administrator checked his phone.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
Nurse Rachel noticed.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“Mr. Carter has requested legal representation.””
I nodded slowly.
Of course.
He was finally realizing the game had changed.
But then the administrator continued.
“He also submitted a new statement.””
My heart tightened.
“What statement?””
He looked down.
“A statement claiming you staged the entire incident.””
I almost smiled.
Of course.
When the truth failed, he would create a new version.
“What does he claim?””
The administrator hesitated.
“He claims you intentionally provoked him and your family to create evidence of abuse.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then I laughed.
A quiet, exhausted laugh.
“He’s rewriting everything.””
Nurse Rachel looked at me.
“He may try.””
I looked at the recording device.
“At least this time, he can’t.””
The administrator nodded.
“That recording is important.””
But something bothered me.
I looked at Olivia.
“You said Daniel keeps files on people.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did he have anything on me?””
Her face changed.
“I don’t know.””
I knew she was hiding something.
“Olivia.””
She looked down.
“There was one file.””
“What file?””
She hesitated.
“Your name.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What was inside?””
“I didn’t open it.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel walked in.””
The room became tense.
“Where is it now?””
Olivia looked terrified.
“I don’t know.””
“Olivia.””
She swallowed.
“The last time I saw it…”
“Yes?””
“It was on his desk.””
My stomach sank.
“Before you came here?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The administrator stood.
“Then we need to secure that file.””
But before anyone could move, Nurse Rachel’s phone rang.
She answered.
A few seconds passed.
Her expression changed.
Then she looked at me.
“Emma.””
I immediately knew.
Something else had happened.
“What?””
She slowly lowered the phone.
“The police have arrived.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
She looked at the administrator.
Then back at me.
“They received a report.””
“From who?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Nurse Rachel said:
“From Daniel.””
My hands went cold.
“What did he report?””
She looked at the papers.
“At first, I thought he was accusing you of being unstable.””
A pause.
“But that’s not what he reported.””
The room became silent.
“What did he say?””
Nurse Rachel took a breath.
“He reported that you committed a crime.””
I felt the air disappear from my lungs.
“What crime?””
She looked at me.
“According to Daniel…”
May you like
The nurse’s voice lowered.
“He claims you tried to harm your unborn child.””
